Those articles saying he won't drop the NBC thing don't make sense. He barely even made that many jokes at their expense. Maybe one or two in the first episode and that's all I recall thus far.

Conan's demographic base (young) don't watch the news anyway (they get it on the web). For older folks, they watch the 11pm news then watch Leno.

I agree. Otherwise the set looks nice.

The monologue has never been Conan's strong point. The sketch comedy and bits are always better, because that's what he and his writers seem to excel at.

This. The only reasons I watch the monologue at all is for the stuff he riffs on due to audience reaction or him and Andy interacting. The jokes are never great, but him usually acting like an ass at some point cracks me up.

Fistful of Mercy was awesome. Too bad they sound nothing like that on the record. They should invite Tom Morello to be a permanent member.

Never heard of Charlyne Yi but I thought she was hilarious.

Yeah if anything I was expecting MORE cracks on NBC. A few jokes in the premiere and the masturbating bear bit but that's really it. He's still making jokes about how he has a new show on basic cable though, but that's different.

Do they not sound like that on their records? I've never heard of them and kinda want to check some stuff out.

What I don't understand is Letterman can take his theme to CBS, but Conan can't take his to TBS?

It's the one piece of the puzzle that's missing.

He's lucky he's still alive the way NBC handled the whole thing, let alone got to take as much shit as he did. They won't even admit he's was ever on the damn network anymore!

Check them out on YouTube. The one they performed on the show is 'Father's Son'.
IMO it's definitely lacking after hearing it live with Morello.

Agree about naming each episode, that went out of style for a reason and it's especially out of place on a late night talk show. Hope they quietly remove that in the future.

On a positive note Michael Cera was a great, best guest so far IMO

They name each episode? That's the first I've heard of it (but then again I was only able to catch Monday night's show). It does sound odd. What have been the episode names so far?

Thanks, those episode titles are pretty weird. Do they actually tie in with the content of each episode in any way, or are they just random Conan-ness? I can't imagine that they would be able to keep this up.

Yep, that's why I actually like them. I think they're just a goofy little throw away gag that the episode has an absurd, completely unrelated title. Maybe it will wear thin after a while, but I like it so far.

Did anyone notice that both the show's opening and the title cards to all the pre-recorded bits have a 'Copyright 2010 Team Coco' notice on them? I think it's pretty cool, and it shows that Conan actually owns his stuff this time, not the network.

Yeah, cheapens a nightly talk show that makes what at least 150 episodes a year? Frankly, these shows are pretty cheap and disposable as they are. This is like complaining that the crack whore you pass on the street is dressed a little too trashy.

Last night had strong interviews but the weakest prepared material since the premiere (and that definitely includes the closing standup). Conan should go back to his shorter Late Night style monologue.

The episode naming thing is just a variation of a talk show staple. It's a quick joke during the intro of the show that if you like, great; if you don't like, you forget about it and move on.

For example, Letterman's announcer has been doing something like this for years:
And now… a guy we knew would never amount to anything… David Letterman!
And now… the number one name in pet food… David Letterman!
And now… a man who’s asking for your vote for county coroner… David Letterman!

I can't believe that so many posts in this thread have been about this, and yet not one person has commented on Julie Bowen's legs  or her hilariously wrong story about Fatty and Smarty.

NiCK Crush 11-12-10 09:25 PM

re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011

It's by no means ruining the show for me, but it just does nothing for me and it seems like an amateur-ish gag. Yea, it did sort of remind me of Letterman and the pointless text that they put up on screen, or those goofy intros. They didn't and don't do anything for me either.

I personally wouldn't say that it cheapens the show but I think they're lame and I'd prefer they stop doing it. And by the way nothing on the forum "really matters", get off your high horse.

I also liked the contrast of Julie Bowen after him talking a mile a minute. Funny bit at people telling him they liked him in Zombieland and he tells them to see Adventureland.
Cera and Tom Hanks were great this week. And an honorable mention to Julie Bowens legs.

It's the one piece of the puzzle that's missing.

When Letterman's "Late Night" started up in 1982, it was a production of Johnny Carson's company, so it owned the rights to the theme song --not NBC, thusly Dave could take that with him to CBS.

Conan's "Late Night" and "Tonight" shows were completely owned and produced by NBC.

Recall that part of the decision for NBC to choose Jay over Dave in 1992 was the fact that NBC would regain whole ownership of "The Tonight Show" franchise. (Carson had owned the show since the early 80s.)

 Wow man, first off the comment wasn't directed at you and second how exactly am I on a "high horse"?? I'm simply saying I think its dumb that people complain about the smallest shit (like an episode title), its not even something worth complaining about its a nitpick at best.

Conan is a pretty rough show right now. It has a lot of flaws but it got better every episode. I've been a Conan fan for a very long time but when I watch him now he's just not as funny. Craig Ferguson is just so much funnier. I did notice that Conan is getting better doing interviews but Craig can get the guest to do all sorts of crazy shit (like the Secretariat dance) and if he ever has a bad guest he can carry the interview.
