re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
Those articles saying he won't drop the NBC thing don't make sense. He barely even made that many jokes at their expense. Maybe one or two in the first episode and that's all I recall thus far.

Sort of bad time for his show to start anyways. 11pm is local news. They should have had him start at 11:30 so he would directly compete with Leno/Letterman

It looks like a cross of garish 1970s decor and something would be a Star Trek episode where they visit a gladiator world.. It's especially distracting during the monologues since it typically only shows up on one side of the screen.

man, is it me or has Conan's opening monologues really really bit?
|
re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
The monologue has never been Conan's strong point. The sketch comedy and bits are always better, because that's what he and his writers seem to excel at.

Its a bit distracting to see Conan lick his lips repeatedly..

There were a few dvdtalkers who had tickets to one of his tapings, has it happened yet and could you share your experience?

re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
Fistful of Mercy was awesome. Too bad they sound nothing like that on the record. They should invite Tom Morello to be a permanent member.
Never heard of Charlyne Yi but I thought she was hilarious. |

the opening theme really annoys me. its awful.

What I don't understand is Letterman can take his theme to CBS, but Conan can't take his to TBS? It's the one piece of the puzzle that's missing. |

I agree. Otherwise the set looks nice. My only other complaint is that I find naming each episode incredibly stupid.
On a positive note Michael Cera was a great, best guest so far IMO |

Agree about naming each episode, that went out of style for a reason and it's especially out of place on a late night talk show. Hope they quietly remove that in the future.

Did anyone notice that both the show's opening and the title cards to all the pre-recorded bits have a 'Copyright 2010 Team Coco' notice on them? I think it's pretty cool, and it shows that Conan actually owns his stuff this time, not the network. |

Why does it really matter whether the episodes are titled or not and in what way does it cheapen the show?? Cripes people complain about the DUMBEST shit.

usually i hate michael cera on talk shows, but he was pretty funny last night.

Yeah, cheapens a nightly talk show that makes what at least 150 episodes a year? Frankly, these shows are pretty cheap and disposable as they are. This is like complaining that the crack whore you pass on the street is dressed a little too trashy.
|
re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
Last night had strong interviews but the weakest prepared material since the premiere (and that definitely includes the closing standup). Conan should go back to his shorter Late Night style monologue.

re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
The episode naming thing is just a variation of a talk show staple. It's a quick joke during the intro of the show that if you like, great; if you don't like, you forget about it and move on.
For example, Letterman's announcer has been doing something like this for years: And now… a guy we knew would never amount to anything… David Letterman! And now… the number one name in pet food… David Letterman! And now… a man who’s asking for your vote for county coroner… David Letterman! I can't believe that so many posts in this thread have been about this, and yet not one person has commented on Julie Bowen's legs  or her hilariously wrong story about Fatty and Smarty. |
re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
It's by no means ruining the show for me, but it just does nothing for me and it seems like an amateur-ish gag. Yea, it did sort of remind me of Letterman and the pointless text that they put up on screen, or those goofy intros. They didn't and don't do anything for me either.

Cera and Tom Hanks were great this week. And an honorable mention to Julie Bowens legs. |

It's the one piece of the puzzle that's missing. Conan's "Late Night" and "Tonight" shows were completely owned and produced by NBC. Recall that part of the decision for NBC to choose Jay over Dave in 1992 was the fact that NBC would regain whole ownership of "The Tonight Show" franchise. (Carson had owned the show since the early 80s.) |

re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
Conan is a pretty rough show right now. It has a lot of flaws but it got better every episode. I've been a Conan fan for a very long time but when I watch him now he's just not as funny. Craig Ferguson is just so much funnier. I did notice that Conan is getting better doing interviews but Craig can get the guest to do all sorts of crazy shit (like the Secretariat dance) and if he ever has a bad guest he can carry the interview.
