Conan O’Brien to End TBS Late-Night Show in 2021, Sets Weekly HBO Max Variety Series
https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/con...ijy2nZZuX5K4Ns Conan O’Brien will end his self-titled TBS late-night show “Conan” in June 2021, WarnerMedia announced Tuesday. The announcement marks an end to an eleven-year run for O’Brien on the cable network. His travel specials, “Conan Without Borders,” will continue to air on TBS going forward. In addition, O’Brien has signed a deal with HBO Max for a new weekly variety series, though no premiere date has been set for that series. |
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
Damn. Ending in June. So no more Comic-con episodes (assuming Comic-con even happens next year).

Interesting....

His travel specials, “Conan Without Borders,” will continue to air on TBS going forward. In addition, O’Brien has signed a deal with HBO Max for a new weekly variety series, though no premiere date has been set for that series. With the announcement, “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” will be the sole late-night show on TBS. That series was renewed for a fifth season last year. “In 1993 Johnny Carson gave me the best advice of my career: ‘As soon as possible, get to a streaming platform,'” O’Brien said. “I’m thrilled that I get to continue doing whatever the hell it is I do on HBO Max, and I look forward to a free subscription.” O’Brien famously came to TBS in 2010 from NBC. There he had hosted “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” for over 15 years before he was tapped to take over “The Tonight Show” from Jay Leno. However, after NBC attempted to move the primetime series “The Jay Leno Show” to late-night and push back “The Tonight Show” to the 12:05 a.m. timeslot, O’Brien quit the show rather than “participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction,” he said at the time. “28 years is a monumental achievement in late-night television,” said Brett Weitz, general manager for TNT, TBS and truTV. “We’re incredibly proud of the groundbreaking work that Conan and his team have accomplished during the 10 years at TBS and are so glad that we will continue to have his presence on our air with the ‘Conan Without Borders’ specials. We celebrate his success and are glad to see it grow across our WarnerMedia family.” O’Brien has filmed multiple travel specials since 2015, though the first to be branded under the “Conan Without Borders” banner came in 2017. To date, he has filmed specials in countries such as Mexico, Israel, Haiti, Greenland, and Cuba. “Conan’s unique brand of energetic, relatable, and at times, absurdist, comedy has charmed late-night audiences for nearly three decades. We can’t wait to see what he and the rest of Team Coco will dream up for this brand new, variety format each week,” said Casey Bloys, chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max. News of the end of “Conan” on TBS comes as the cable industry faces increasingly stiff competition from streaming services. Multiple media giants, such as NBCUniversal and Disney, have undergone restructuring in the past year to emphasize their streaming product over linear channels. |

Quite interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Conan Picks Networks and it's....TBS
I don't have HBO Max, so I won't watch this show. And I don't have cable, so I don't watch his TBS show. But I do listen to his podcast, which is both interesting and hilarious.
Like the article says, he's been on TV for close to 30 years, so he has to be ready to move on from the talk show format and the rules, but he still wants to work and create. So good for him. He's a brilliant comic mind. He wrote "Marge vs the Monorail" for chrissakes! |
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I love Conan but I bailed on him a few years into TBS run. I would absolutely watch a weekly show with him on HBO Max, though.
|
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I think this is a good move, granted HBO Max stays solvent. I love Conan but haven't watched his show in ages.
|
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
Sucks
I am a fan but his best work was on NBC and could not match it once he left. Maybe he should have brought the writers and staff from that era over to TBS since most of the time it is on repeats on TBS. I think he might still do the travel shows? |

re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I’ve been enjoying some of his complete interviews on YouTube. The recent one with Ricky Gervais was a hoot.

re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I've always enjoyed Conan but Late Night is a dead format at this point. The fact that we live in a DVR age yet these shows are still beholden to the 11:30 or 12:30 timeslot boggles my mind. Meaning you can get away with more stuff at 12:30 than 11:30. I feel bad for Conan because I think he saw the writing on the wall about Late Night years ago, and really doesn't know what to do at this point.
If anyone is a fan of Tim Dillon's comedy, he pretty much sums up why Late Night sucks today. |
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I watched four minutes and had to stop because everything he was saying was stupid.
1) I don't know who the fuck Tim Dillon is. Seriously, this post by mcnabb is the first time I have ever heard of him. 2) #1 is important because he's talking about how he doesn't want to "play the game" of doing panel on a talk show and engage in a conversation about nothing. Hey, duh, you've never been asked to be on Fallon or Kimmel or anything but David Spade's show. So take you high and mighty "principles" and shove them up your fat ass. 3) He says to imagine you have a hard life working in a factory and you're supposed to be entertained by watching Jimmy Fallon play games and sing. Yeah, duh (again), that's the whole fucking point of escapist entertainment. Watching people sing, or do something fun, or talk about some vacuous subject. For many people, that is exactly what they want to do to relax before going to bed. Or they want to watch Colbert make jokes about what a total POS Trump is for 10 minutes to relieve their daily anxiety. And somehow this dumbshit hasn't figured out that people LOVE hearing people talk about doing interesting things like taking trips to Italy. Americans are fascinated by wealth and fame, and they eat up glimpses of celebrity life like hogs at a trough. |
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
He is just jealous since Fallon has more money and better looking than him.
I bet Colbert's ratings will go down now since he had nothing to rely on except Trump bashing and now he will have to try to be funny outside of politics which will be hard to do. |

re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I can’t believe Conan has been on TBS for 11 years! Seems like it’s just been a couple of years since the Tonight Show mess.
I didn’t realize he was moving to HBOmax but I hope he reinvents himself a little with the freedom he’ll have. I love Conan but I think his TBS show(s) kind of petered out over the last few years. I haven’t really kept track of his show lately. |
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
When I first heard this news I was bummed out because it was another nail in the coffin of late night. Then I realized I haven’t watched late night tv consistently since Letterman retired.
|
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I gave up on his TBS show a a few years ago. I am excited to see what he can do with an HBO Max show.
|
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I'm actually more likely to watch Conan now that he's on HBO Max. I hope that means he'll be a big edgier.
|
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
I can't imagine what he could do on HBO Max that he couldn't do on TBS, besides nudity. TBS let him get away with pretty much anything.
|
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
The only difference from the show in terms of what he's "allowed" to do on his podcast seems to be non-bleeped swearing and maybe a few stories with more sordid details.
Conan has ALWAYS been my favorite. We also don't have cable. I watch and enjoy YouTube clips and the podcast. Looks like yet another reason to really think about HBO Max, finally... |
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
Just a Reminder that this week and then next are the last on TBS

re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
He sold his podcast business to SIrius XM and will produce content for them
Former NBC and TBS late night host Conan O’Brien has sold his podcast and digital media business, Team Coco, to satellite radio giant SiriusXM. The deal will see O’Brien’s popular interview podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, as well as Team Coco’s 10 other podcasts (which include a behind-the-scenes look at his late night shows called Inside Conan and a Parks and Recreation series hosted by Rob Lowe and Alan Yang called Parks and Recollection), join the SiriusXM podcast network. As with other podcast deals, the shows will continue to be distributed on other popular podcasting platforms. O’Brien, who signed a five-year talent deal with SiriusXM as part of the $150 million acquisition (valuation via the WSJ, which first reported the deal), will also produce a comedy channel for SiriusXM’s flagship radio service. The deal also includes some video content from his podcasts and late night show, as well as live events and merchandise. Team Coco’s staff will join SiriusXM as well. |
re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
That's cool. His long form interviews on Youtube are pretty good.

Re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
Mod Note: With Conan's TBS show over and new content moving to SiriusXM, seems like a more catch-all thread title is in order.

Re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
Is there any platform where I can watch his podcast? YouTube just has clips, Spotify doesn't have video, and I don't have Sirius. :scratch2:

Re: Conan O'Brien - Shows, Projects, and News
Apple or Itunes has the audio podcast but not sure if there is a video podcast?
