Conan O'Brien was welcomed back to television by more than 4.1 million viewers, while his winning numbers had minimal effect on his late-night opponents.
The former host of "The Tonight Show," who left NBC eight months ago, returned on Monday with a new talk show, "Conan," premiering on basic-cable network TBS. In the 11 p.m. Eastern hour, O'Brien's opening night throttled his direct rivals on Comedy Central. "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" was seen by 1.3 million viewers, followed by "The Colbert Report" with 1 million. But the curiosity factor clearly brought new viewers to the scene. Even against the debut of "Conan," the "Daily Show" audience dropped by just 200,000 viewers from its season-to-date average for Monday episodes. Viewership for "Colbert" dropped by only 150,000 from its season-to-date average. Conan beat Jay Leno, the host who reclaimed the "Tonight Show" chair from him. Starting at 11:35 p.m. Eastern, "Tonight" attracted 3.5 million viewers. But "Tonight," which overlaps with "Conan" by 25 minutes, was down by just 100,000 viewers. Season-to-date, "Tonight" is averaging 3.6 million viewers, according to the Nielsen Co. It's really nice to have him back. |

They can boast all the first few show's ratings all they want but they are essentially meaningless due to all the curiosity viewers the first ones will get. Wait 2-3 weeks & that will be more accurate of the ratings he will normally get.
Sort of bad time for his show to start anyways. 11pm is local news. They should have had him start at 11:30 so he would directly compete with Leno/Letterman |
re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
I never really had huge expectations for the ratings and I doubt TBS did either (in fact they are probably quite satisfied with what he's getting). You can't really compare ratings of a show on cable to one that's on a network simply because most people probably have network where a lot might not have cable. I'm sure he has taken his core audience and some new supporters but realistically the majority of people were never going to stop watching Leno/Letterman all together and switch to Conan completely.

To everyone that has commented on the set design: The only thing I don't like about it are the red and gold partitions that were put up. It looks like a cross of garish 1970s decor and something would be a Star Trek episode where they visit a gladiator world.. It's especially distracting during the monologues since it typically only shows up on one side of the screen.

Those articles saying he won't drop the NBC thing don't make sense. He barely even made that many jokes at their expense. Maybe one or two in the first episode and that's all I recall thus far.

man, is it me or has Conan's opening monologues really really bit?
|
re: Conan --> Series Discussion Thread --> 2010-2011
The monologue has never been Conan's strong point. The sketch comedy and bits are always better, because that's what he and his writers seem to excel at.

Its a bit distracting to see Conan lick his lips repeatedly..

There were a few dvdtalkers who had tickets to one of his tapings, has it happened yet and could you share your experience?

Fistful of Mercy was awesome. Too bad they sound nothing like that on the record. They should invite Tom Morello to be a permanent member.
Never heard of Charlyne Yi but I thought she was hilarious. |

the opening theme really annoys me. its awful.

Never heard of Charlyne Yi but I thought she was hilarious. Do they not sound like that on their records? I've never heard of them and kinda want to check some stuff out. |

What I don't understand is Letterman can take his theme to CBS, but Conan can't take his to TBS? It's the one piece of the puzzle that's missing. |

I agree. Otherwise the set looks nice. My only other complaint is that I find naming each episode incredibly stupid.
On a positive note Michael Cera was a great, best guest so far IMO |

Agree about naming each episode, that went out of style for a reason and it's especially out of place on a late night talk show. Hope they quietly remove that in the future.
