I wouldn't say this statement applies to all seasons of Dexter - the first three were, I thought quite brilliant. And last season was pretty good as well. But the writing in these season has been pretty marginal. Too many predictable moments.

Is the baby sitter mentioned in the books?
Somehow I expect that things are going to go really bad with her.

I believe that the nanny will be the big bad by the end of the season. She'll scatter Saint statues all through Miami and will only return Harrison if Dexter can find them all. In the climax, she calls Dexter as he drives frantically around, just to taunt him with "You'll never get my lucky charms!"

This wouldn't surprise me. She loves the kid and she doesn't think too highly of Dexter as a father. Maybe she'll kidnap him and think that she's "saving" him.
But I think they have Dexter too caught up in the Lumen mess to have him take a detour like that.

Finally got to watch this episode last night. I thought it was really good, the last few have really been good if you ask me. I actually have kind of grown to like Lumen as a character and wouldn't mind if they keep her around past this season. The big downfall to this season still is the Angel/LaGuerta storyline which I just can't bring myself to get interested in.
Really?? I mean it isn't the smartest show on television but come on it deserves more credit than that. I would put it way above anything on network television as I can't think of one drama series on network that even remotely interests me. The big thing that drags it down most of the time is the side characters, but Dexter himself is so interesting that it more than makes up for them (especially considering the side characters really don't have that much screen time to begin with).

She's given too much attention for her to just be a nanny and not figure in any of the major current or future plots.
As for Lumen, I don't want her dead. We don't need another person close to Dexter to die... just like we really don't need Deb dating another scumbag. It just gets too repetative. Just have Lumen get satisfaction in her revenge and have her go back home to heal and live out a happy life.

Predictions (I avoid spoilers, so these aren't based on anything but my own brain):
* Nanny is as she appears, somebody for Dexter to interact with in his "family life". She will not "go bad" (although it is possible that Dexter's actions put her and/or Harrison in danger).
* Lumen will live, but we will get a hint that she is not satiated and may become a serial killer herself.
* Quinn will eventually order Buckaroo Banzai to back down (out of love for Debbie or some shit), but Banzai will continue to do a little work on his own and get killed by Dexter (accidentally or otherwise). This will reignite Quinn's suspicions of Dexter.

Prediction: Next season will feature Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd, Ellen Barkin, or Clancy Brown as they work their way through the cast of Buckaroo Banazai.
If it does go another season, they've kind of worked themselves into a corner with Harrison. I really don't want to see another whole season of Dexter making excuses to the nanny.
Also, everyone in the department has forgotten about Trinity who they all believe killed the wife of one of their own. I know that the FBI has taken over the case, but that's never stopped them from working on such cases before.

You're right, of course.
If he was known to be dead, there would be no need to put his family into witness protection.

But I do feel that after this current episode, the season seems to be picking up a lot...though I hope they use Trinity's family soon. Hopefully Quinn gets Robocop on that trail, but it'll be hard with the protection.

They really shouldn't be doing this. This show already has way too many serial killers in which Dexter stumbles upon. It's one thing if she were just a vigilante exacting revenge, but another for her to turn from a victim to a serial killer. It wouldn't really make sense. Although with some of the writing we've witnessed this season, it probably wouldn't surprise me if they went this route.
