Detroit 187 -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 09/21/10

By djariya at 2010-09-03
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
Starring:
Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos, Life on Mars)
James McDaniel (NYPD Blue)
Erin Cummings (Spartacus)

Aisha Hinds (True Blood)
Natalie Martinez (Death Race)

The Pilot was written by Jason Richman (Bangkok Dangerous & Swing Vote) and he also created the show
This show is shot on location in Detroit. The Pilot was originally shot documentary, which was the hook of the show initially, but was later ditched.
Yeah, it's another Police procedural, but the cast is decent and I like that it's shot on location in the actual city it takes place in.

Being from just outside Detroit, I'm going to give this a more than fair shake.

From the creator of Bangkok Dangerous and Swing Vote -- Jason Richman must have had a stellar sales pitch to the studio.
I may check this out...

Well... Not sure what to think yet, but what a crazy ending.
One thing I didn't like: they fucked up and somebody said "soda" rather than "pop." Almost nobody in Michigan and Detroit especially says "soda." It's pop here.

Yeah I have to say I liked it quite a bit. Bit cliched as you'd expect from any pilot, but the cast did a good job overall. Loved the scene with Imperioli in the interrogation room just staring silently for what seemed like hours. Good stuff. Also nice to see an Indian guy playing an Indian guy. What a novel concept.
Roller derby doc was lookin' good.

I thought the resolution of the hostage standoff was hokey, but otherwise this was pretty terrific. Michael Imperioli carried the show well.
Shooting on location gives the show an authentic feel, and it has an energetic rhythm. I especially liked the music.

acting was pretty good but over all I did not really like the show.. Maybe coming off the cheesy action shows from the other night I was just not in the mood to shift gear back to a more drama based cop show..
The color timing of the show also just pissed me off to be honest. I'm sure they do the grey color timing to give it a gritty Detroit sort of feel but I don't have HD gear to watch washed out shades of grey for everything. That was the whole show, really dark, really grey, sort of dull.
but then a lot of people in the thread here liked it so I'm guessing I just missed the vibe of the show or something.. I'll hang in there watching and see if it grows on me some, if for no other reason then it did ramp up a lot near the end.. last 20min of the show was very well done.

Great episode if not a tad predictable.

I didn't even realize Erin Cummings was the doctor until I opened this thread. Must have been all the clothes she had on.

Completely irrelevant but I thought it was funny how the drug dealer and the cops phone numbers were only off by a single digit. 555-0122(cops), 555-0112(dealer). How many druggies call the tip line looking for a fix?
