Re: Outlaw -- New Series Starring Jimmy Smits -- Premieres 09/15/10

Pilot was way too rushed. His decision to leave the court came about 5 minutes in, they assembled the team in another 5 minutes, and the rest was back and forth with the case, which wasn't even that compelling. Just terrible pacing. Also don't care for any of the supporting characters, all of whom seem like caricatures.

Also, did he somehow manage to bed that chick who was arguing with him during the protest? WTF... I feel like there was a scene cut out there.

Eh, overall not impressed. Won't take another look unless it somehow manages to be a hit.

yeah that was my main problem with it also.. They really seem to be in -tv pilot mode- as they quickly throw every thing they can into one ep. In most cases really forcing it..

already have, a random lurking mystery guy, people quitting a job, getting hired for another job, "I love you", random slutty acting girl throwing out tons of innuendos, nerdy guy getting set up as will they won't they with slutty acting girl, parent death, mystery man of political power, main character with will they will they not leave the team, plus a few dozen other tv show cliché moves..

spread them out over a bunch of ep it would not seem so bad but wow they really forced them into this one ep. I know the idea for shows now is to get going as fast as they can being networks don't give them time to build up a story line but this was really ham fisted..

I almost expected an ex-wife to show up, a random baby to be dropped off and someone to get shot in the ep too. I mean why not really cram a few more cliché into the hour.

still, Smits is pretty good in the show. I might record an ep or two more but I would not be shocked if it's gets canned.

So, he's basically Tony Stark as a lawyer? I only caught a few minutes before tuning out.

Also, this show is not doing Carly Pope any favors in the looks department.

The good: Ellen Woglom.

The bad: Everything else. I was ready to bail about 5 minutes in, but I watched the whole thing.

I loved this in the review posted on the first page of the thread:

Like Father, Like Son 2: Judicial Boogaloo

This show sounds terrible. Is it laughably bad though? I wonder if it's too late to add Jimmy to L&O: Los Angeles.

Perfect summary of what I thought of the Pilot. I like Smits alot, but this wasn't a good episode to get viewers to watch the show weekly. I also thought that Smits was a little over the top in his acting.

Carly Pope's character is awful. I don't know how I can take her seriously as Smits PI when she's constantly cracking sex jokes and bragging how hot she is when she wasn't. I cringed when the blonde associate professed her love to him after she thought he was dying.

I'm shocked that NBC bought the show based off this Pilot. I'll give it a few more weeks to see if it improves, but this isn't must see TV at all.

I finally saw this show (it is available for a free download on iTunes).

It was bad, I'll give it two more episodes before it's yanked. The whole premise is just ludicrous.

Edit: iTunes also has the pilots of Lone Star and The Event, and Season 3/Episode 1 of Castle for free download.

Finally watched this - it wasn't as horrible as people made it out to be but it wasn't that good either. I would replace the three younger characters because they were just a mess. Start over with Smits and the older lawyer and maybe it will have a chance.

I'll give it one or two more episodes to see if it improves.

Eh, I thought it was fine. I probably won't watch every week for the same reason I bailed on Shark, but for what it was I've seen much, much worse.

Anybody else watch the second episode?

I thought it was better than than the pilot, though the case became outdated when SB1070 got neutered.

But it was a nice twist on the Arizona law.

Re: Outlaw -- New Series Starring Jimmy Smits -- Premieres 09/15/10

"It's my job not to believe him."

So there's a poker club 2 miles from the border that just so happened to have exterior cameras running and recording at the time of the shooting. I guess it's good that Garza is a poker player. That's convenient.

Also, didn't the guy get shot 3 times? You can't chalk that up to an accidental struggle - 1 shot okay, but 3? Why didn't the prosecutor mention that?

I'm pretty sure they got the law on expectation of privacy in gov't property quite wrong as well. Then the whole creating a fair jury just to prove a point. I'm sure you're client would have really appreciated that effort had you lost the case. But then it would be pretty funny to see an ineffective assistance of counsel claim against a former SCt Justice.

I can totally picture whoever is writing this thing being some smug douchebag sitting there thinking about how genius they are when they wrote the "reveal" that Garza was representing the cop and the jury selection scene.

They'll undoubtedly play the "ooo, which way will he go....?" in every episode.

The more I think about it, the more absurd that jury selection scene was, and this comes from someone who watched every episode of Boston Legal.

Re: Outlaw -- New Series Starring Jimmy Smits -- Premieres 09/15/10

Now on "production hiatus," according to The Hollywood Reporter;

Here's what that means: The network is suspending production on future episodes, but plans to air its remaining "Outlaw" episodes. The network has five episodes total.

If the network sees a ratings rise, production could resume.
Pretty unlikely they'll see a ratings bump.

I watched the pilot of this online a couple of days back and I wasn't impressed I'm not surprised that it's on production hiatus.

Re: Outlaw -- New Series Starring Jimmy Smits -- Premieres 09/15/10

I watched all 3 episodes that have aired so far. I don't hate the show, but Smits talents are way above playing a crusading lawyer. Probably my favorite of the 3 so far was the mother who left her baby in the car accidently in the heat.

The subplot I don't get is Smits flirtation with Melora Hardin's character (Jan from the office)

The law portrayed in the baby-in-car episode was so woefully bad.

They will most likely yank it for November sweeps.

I think NBC quickly realized they had a stinker which is why they put it in this time slot.

I don't know about that... he was pretty good in Dexter Season 3.

It won't make it that far anyways; they are only airing 2 more episodes, and will look at the ratings of those two.

The article said had 5 more episodes "in the can." I took that to mean 5 unaired episodes remaining, not 5 episodes total.

/\ Thanks for the correction, I didn't pick up on that when I first read it.
