Ratings-wise, Mad Men held up well in week 2.
2.5M viewers and 0.8 in the demos.

Not that it really matters, but I read in Entertainment Weekly that the Jersey Shore premiere had more viewers than the Mad Men premiere. It's a sad day.

Mad Men has always been more of a critical than a ratings success. Same with Breaking Bad. And, I agree, it's sad.

This is my first season and Im all caught up. I for one am happy to see Joel Murray back in the cast; I hope he sticks around. I liked how the past seasons had all those eps with Orson Wells; very cool

Don's forehead vein had me thinking he was going to have an aneurysm when he was hugging Anna goodbye.
I think I'll have to try a Godzilla movie to ring in the new year...

Excellent episode. I love these quieter eps that delve into the characters. Jon Hamm does a great job of alternating between the alpha male of Don Draper and the softer, more vulnerable Dick Whitman.
Joan had some great lines -
After asking Lane if he wanted some fried chicken: "Breast, thigh?" (that's an impossible choice. )
After firing the secretary: "You'll be paid through the end of the year." (it was New Years Eve. )
I'm not a Betty-hater like some here, but the show is a lot better without her.
Bring on 1965!

And was that Finn from The Sopranos at the stand-up comedian?

It was Gamera.
I was bored during the Dick Wittman segment (I thought they were done with that story line), but they redeemed themselves with Lane's flowers getting mixed up and even better, Don & Lane's night out.
Joan's reaction to getting the flowers intended for Lane's wife was priceless.

that flower mix up was classic when Lane said what did the flowers to my wife say and the secretary saying: "Joan, sorry..." loved that part and then the last scene was just great with them huddled in the meeting and Lane coming in late and Joan saying "Ok, let's begin 1965" or something like that.
just great.
just great.

The Anna stuff was a major tear jerker for me. I was never a fan of the California stuff before but I really felt the relationship between Dick and Anna this time.
Was hoping to see Don nail his "niece" but I guess they didn't want him to sink that low.
Not a fan of home life Joan but office Joan is awesome.
Don and Lane was some good stuff. $25 for a whore? I wonder what that translates to in today's economy?

Don and Lane's night on the town was definitely the highlight of the episode. Loved them watching Gamera and spending $25 on whores. I would love to have been in the writers room when Matthew Weiner was researching how much whores charged in the 1960's.
I enjoyed the California segment with Don/Dick visiting Anna. I think they have a very unique relationship and I think it was kind of poignant and sad when he learned of Anna's cancer diagnosis. I was so expecting Don to nail the niece, so I was a little shocked that didn't happen.
The flower mix up with Lane's wife and Joan was hilarious.
Good stuff, even though it was another low key episode.

The "niece" had some nice thighs, obviously either an athletic cheerleader or into gymnastics in her teen years.
