Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel Complete Series Get Repackaged

Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel are both getting repackaged. To look wider instead of taller.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - This Fall The Complete Series DVDs Get a Newly Repackaged Look

This classic Joss Whedon series will have a revamped box in October

When a previously-released TV-on-DVD title simply gets repackaged, it's usually not really big news for us or for our readers. After all, the on-disc content is usually the same, even if the boxing might be a bit thinner...and even if the cover art of that box has changed a bit. But it's a bigger thing with bigger packages, especially when it's a bigger show. And shows from recent years don't get too much bigger than Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother) and James Marsters (guesting in Caprica and on The Super Hero Squad Show).

As you know, all 7 seasons of the show were made available in Fox's 2006 DVD release of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set, in a box that is taller than it is wide. This fall the new packaging will be a rather wide, short box as shown below. The on-disc content is expected to be the same, as is the list price of $199.98 SRP. We're not certain if the physical bonus items previously packed into the box (such a a letter to fans from Joss Whedon) will still be included, however. We're told to expect it approximately around October 12th, but that date (and the pricing) could be subject to change. Here's the new package art for Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Series:

As you know, all 5 seasons of the show were made available in Fox's 2007 DVD release of the Angel - Collector's Set, in a box that is roughly cube-shaped. This fall the new packaging will be a rather wide, short box as shown below. The on-disc content is expected to be the same, as is the list price of $139.98 SRP. We're not certain if the physical bonus items previously packed into the box (such a a letter to fans from Joss Whedon) will still be included, however. I'm perfectly happy with the current box sets. I like the way they both look.

At $28 a season, its a bit of a rip. The Walmart near me has the idividual seasons for about $15 each. Target has those double packs that are $20 for 2 seasons.

Since this will no doubt be just a simple re-package with nothing new (like widescreen ANGEL season 1 would be neat), I'll stick with my original digipaks which I got as they were originally released season-per-season.

(and yes, I'm more than aware of the whole widescreen issue with ANGEL season 1, which is like the wider Buffy seasons. Not turning this into a thing. )

Yuck. Those are supposed to be an improvement? The last box sets were great, I'll stick with them.

About the only way I'd upgrade would be if they released the SD DVD quality eps on Blu-Ray as one-season-per-disc collections, for convenience sake. I know true HD isn't possible without redoing all the effects, and that BRs can fit something like 23 hours of SD video. Has any studio done something like this yet?

I remember I threw out that idea for older shows back in the HD-DVD/Blu-ray days and everyone flipped their shit. I still think it's a great idea.

I wonder if they'll finally re-do the disc with "Once More With Feeling" to make that episode anamorphic. Probably not, since they're just calling it a re-packaging.

To get a bit off topic if these are going to be re-released I wish 20th Fox would also re-release the complete X-files in a packaging that didn't scratch up the discs beyond playability.

The only problem with that is it would have to be letterboxed to a small degree, since the PAL version is slightly cut off at the sides due to it not being modified to 1.78:1, which isn't the AR of that episode. I'm not sure what it is exactly, though.

My impression from her has always been she'd prefer to never talk about "Buffy" again.

She does seem like a total bitch. I guess she can talk about her direct to dvd career instead.

I am just going on interviews I have seen with her. She seems to suffer from the same thing Gillian Anderson does with the Scully character. That being known for something that has brought you a lot of fame and wealth is such a burdon. Perhaps saying she comes across as a bitch was a bit too much.

Maybe I'll be able to pick up the current Angel Box Set cheap now. I have the individual Buffy sets already.

I have a good friend that works in LA and worked with people on the "Buffy" and "Angel" crews. They had lots of stories to share (SMG stopping takes to answer her phone, disappearing with David Boreanaz, yelling at crew members). Always sounded like a real piece of work to me.

Didn't stop me from loving the show though.
