I agree that the show isn't as good as it used to be, but I feel it's held up good considering it's been on for twenty years.
Some might consider the following a self-fulfilling prophecy. On April 30, 1992, when FOX reran the episode "Three Men and a Comic Book", new footage was added at the end of the episode. Homer, watching TV, saw a picture of Bill Cosby, with the caption "The Cosby Show // 1984-1992." (This Simpsons rerun aired the same night as the last episode of "The Cosby Show") Homer: Little Theo. You grew up before our eyes. Bart: Hey, Dad. How come they're taking The Cosby Show off the air?' Homer: Because Mr. Cosby wanted to stop before the quality suffered. Bart: Quality, schmality! If I had a TV show, I'd run that sucker into the ground! Homer: (patting Bart on the back) Amen, boy. Amen. |
Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
The Simpsons just needs to be put out of its misery at this point. The shows creativity has been bone dry for over a decade. At this point they're only damaging their legacy even further if they go on without Shearer.

Plus - when I feel a show has to be "put out its misery" I just stop watching. And fwiw I still stand by my post from 06/10 in this thread (#25), which was:  I've watched the show from S01 on, and I still watch. And it makes me laugh. |
Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
Hmm, five-year bump just to resurrect the horrible apostrophe use in the title and throughout the thread.

Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
It's certainly coasting at this point but it's very rarely authentically bad.

Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
I've actually been pretty happy with the Simpsons over the past few years. It is much improved these days over the terrible teen years. They stopped trying to emulate Family Guy and South Park.

Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
It's just awful these days. Just awful. But hey, if there are people who enjoy it, let them make more. It doesn't bother me. I have the first 10 seasons on DVD and for me those are some of the best television ever.

Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
The series is still good. There are going to be haters but honestly for being around as long as it has been its still pretty good. There have been ups and downs but I think the show has gotten a lot stronger again over the last five or six years. I agree that the worst years were the teen years.

I think this current season (whatever number it is) has been rock solid.
Plus - when I feel a show has to be "put out its misery" I just stop watching. After giving up on the show around 2001, I started regularly watching the new episodes this year and really enjoyed them. I'm sure it helps I stopped thinking about The Simpsons as single, connected show years ago. There have been so many vastly different eras, it's sort of like the differences between Scooby-Doo Where Are You? and The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries. |
Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
It never destroyed its legacy and is still a good show.

I don't watch the show anymore but it's impossible to destroy it's legacy. The influence the show has had on television and pop culture is unmeasurable. Every current tv writer grew up watching the show. It has a golden legacy.

Re: At what point does the Simpsons completly destroy it's legacy?
At this point the show's legacy is it's longevity, not that it is/was a great television show. It's the television equivalent of McDonalds. At some point in the 1940s it was a treat to go to that first McDonalds in San Bernadino. Heck maybe the burgers were even delicious. But now it's just crap people eat not to starve. The Simpsons is crap Fox puts on the air because it knows there are people out there who will watch it regardless of quality.
