Haven't seen this mentioned, but star Andy Whitfield was recently diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer.

'Spartacus' Star Andy Whitfield Diagnosed With Cancer
By PopEater Staff Posted Mar 9th 2010 02:48PM

Andy Whitfield, who plays the lead on the Starz drama 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand,' has been diagnosed with a treatable form of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. In a statement posted to EW.com, Whitfield said, "I'm receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me."

In the meantime, Starz said that it will postpone production on season 2, titled 'Spartacus: Vengeance,' while Whitfield, 35, receives treatment for the condition.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy," said Starz president Chris Albrecht, according to the Ausiello Files. "His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time."

The bloody drama -- which was renewed for a second season before its series premiere in January -- has been a steady ratings draw for the network, with recent episodes averaging about one million viewers. It also introduced the Welsh-born model-actor to mainstream U.S. audiences. He previously starred on such Australian TV series as 'Opening Up' and 'McLeod's Daughters.'
Hopefully he has a full recovery.

Man do I hate Ilithia or however you spell her snake of a name.
Spoiler:
I can't believe one of the best characters on the show had to perish by the hands of spartacus himself, his best and really only friend.
Yes it was a very good episode, as are they all. But that hurt. IDK how he is going to cope with things. Andy is in my prayers, he will beat the cancer.

I knew Ilithyia was up to something, but, goddamn I did not see that coming...

Hopefully Numerius comes to a very bad ending soon.

Damn. This show just does not let up! I have to say, it's becoming a real favorite. Here's to Andy's health and quick recovery.

Re: Spartacus: Blood and Sand -- "Party Favors" -- 03/26/10

This show is ridiculously engrossing now, and it's not just the novelty of all the graphic blood splatter, gory fight scenes and sex scenes, it's the building up of characters, and putting them through the wringer following their own individual ambitions and dreams, many times at the expense of others in these Roman times. I had little faith in this show when I first heard about it, but it's been a thrilling ride.

Are the guards Romans doing it as a proper job or Slaves ?

I gather their combat skills are way short of the top gladiators ?

Fixed because it's been bothering me. Why not call the main character "Bartacus" while you're at it

Re: Spartacus: Blood and Sand -- "Party Favors" -- 03/26/10

Spartacus's buddy is Varro, a Roman name

Isn't it safe to assume that the series will eventually go where the life story of Spartacus did, and to the eventual uprising of the slaves against Romans? (Historically it was the third and last one...) So sooner or later Crixus will become Spartacus's new pal before that happens.

If the show does go in the direction of the slave revolt, then what Ilithyia said to the kid in the tub, about how his actions will shape the future and blah blah blah, will have more of an effect than she ever could have realized.

The guards arent slaves. They are hired hands.

As they described in one of the earlier episodes, the skills of even elite soldiers/warriors pales to that of a decent gladiator.

I guess the Gladiators spend all day training, the guards spend all day standing still

Unfortunately I did b/c the episode description for next week's show talked about Spartacus getting over the death of his Gladiator friend. I thought that was a pretty bad spoiler for an episode description.

Thought the pilot was really bad, but I'm glad I stuck with the show. I've been watching it in bunches, but now I'm caught up. That's irritating b/c after I finished the last one I wanted to see the next show.

Some foreshadowing tonight showing Spartacus as a great tactician and Crixus as a meathead.

Batiatus will probably be on the warpath next week after getting smacked down by the magistrate.

Didn't he something to the effect of "to be returned with blood" when Domina asked him about the magistrate? I got the impression that he wanted to kill him.

Thanks for the correction good sir. Although Bartacus does sound like a nice Simpsons parody

After doing some further reading, now I'm waiting to see when Oenomaus appears in the series.

For those who don't know what's coming up, **MAJOR SPOILER**

Spoiler:
Crixus, Spartacus, and Oenonmaus command the slave armies. Some time after Oenonmaus dies, Crixus splits his forces from Spartacus and stays in Italy to continue plundering. The "meathead" and his army of 30,000 were massacred by the Roman legions at Mount Garganus. Stupid bastard didn't realize he was fighting experienced legions rather than poorly-led "house troops" until the end

Hmmm - wonder what happens to the character of Doctore in the series? I can't see him joining the rebellion.

If "Bartacus" shows up on the Simpsons, I'm taking all the credit

Individual combat is different than massed fighting. Completely different skill set though both could be mastered. Soldiers would train for fighting as a group, being forced into individual combat would mean the formation has been broken and they would be in trouble.

I'd love to see Ilithyia join the little shit.

Maybe toss Ashur in (off?) as well Otherwise, have Crixus break his other leg:

Ashur: I need a sword!!!!
Crixus: (attacks and breaks leg)
Ashur: I need a splint!!!!
