Perhaps because he is THE candidate. He's Jacobs replacement and hence can't kill him?

I wonder if the show will end like the finale began last season with Sawyer (white)vs whoever MIBs replacement is at the beginning of there time on the island?

How come no one is asking who the candidate to replace Jacob will be???? I would think Locke if it weren't for the whole dead thing (but Flocke shouting "Don't tell me what I can't do" might mean something... maybe Locke has infected Smokey). My next guess would be Hurly.

That's a great theory.

Spoiled just in case:

Spoiler:
I could see Jack and Sawyer sitting on the beach waiting for potential "replacements" to show up in the year 2150... taking similar steps that Jacob did to "manipulate" normal people to come to the island.

Re: Lost: The Final Season -- "The Substitute" -- 02/16/10

Why would MIB take any part in the replacement of Jacob or even bring it up if it took him so long to kill him in the first place? And was that little cave there for both of them to use or is the MIB making his first trip there now that Jacob is gone? Were these two at least amicable where they could walk amongst each other and discuss the players in "the game"?

White and black is a type of "good and evil." Jacob was the good and the other guy was the evil. Jacob is now dead so the stone representing him can now be thrown out.

Do we really have a measure on good and evil in this game though?

I believe they were amicable in the beginning based on the scene with them together watching the Blackrock and Jacob telling Hugo he was "killed by an old friend who grew tired of my company."

And why does everyone think the bomb immediately sank the island killing everyone? Maybe little Ben and some 'others' got off after the bomb exploded, but before the island sank.

Something tells me that the beginning is hundreds if not thousands of years before that scene with them.

I think you are on to something here. Maybe the NC timeline is really a NJ (no Jacob) timeline? That would make sense given all of the other changes we have seen in the new timeline...maybe it is a better world without Jacob. Maybe Jacob is not such a good guy/thing...

Also, MIB said he used to be a man. I thought that this was quite a reveal. Sort of rules out my "alien beings" locked in an epic battle theory...

I was half expecting Locke to show Sawyer his spaceship when they went in to the cave. Then I thought no it would be to early in the season for that kind of reveal.

Lostpedia has a list of the possible candidates. Lots of the crash survivors seem to be listed. Interesting that there seems to be no mention of Kate.

Perhaps the "game" has to continue? Jacob was looking for his replacement but MIB has to have one as well?

Something else worth mentioning. If Jacob was indeed the protector of the island, then that might explain why the island was destroyed in the non-crash timeline. If something happened to Jacob in that timeline, then he wasn't able to protect the island from destruction.

Perhaps, Jacob was able to protect the island from natural disasters (tsunami's, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc) in the past by moving it.

As far as we know, Hurley didn't encounter Jacob until after his return as one of the Oceanic 6. It was when he got out of jail in 2007 that Jacob approached him. Unless that wasn't the first meeting between the two, one would assume his switch from unlucky to lucky was affected elsewhere.

I think the series is going to end with Jack and Sawyer as the new Jacob and Smoky.

Yeah, but what I'm thinking is.. Instead of thinking that the destruction of the island is what is causing the difference in the No-crash time line, perhaps we are seeing a time line where Jacob was killed much earlier. Without Jacob's influence, the Losties have a much better and life.

Plus without Jacob around, he isn't able to protect the island from whatever sunk the island. (I'm thinking it wasn't the bomb that sunk the island).

Just a thought.

I also think that the last scene in the cave may be MiB's place and not Jacob's.

Other than MiB suggesting it was Jacob's place, how do we know it was Jacob's?

I cannot see Jack taking over Jacobs role. He's caused more harm to the island then good. Hardly a protector.

I can see Jack taking Smokie's role and Sawyer the protector. Just because Sawyer is with him now, I don't think it will end that way.

Re: Lost: The Final Season -- "The Substitute" -- 02/16/10

According to Lostpedia, apparently two of the names crossed out on the wall were Littleton and Straume. Miles and Claire/possibly Aaron?
Yup, I mentioned this earlier. Thus adding to my theory that the names that are crossed out don't mean those people are dead. it just means the people crossed out have done what jacob needed of them and has no more use for them. This is why he told Hurley to bring Sayid to the temple. he still needs him.

Re: Lost: The Final Season -- "The Substitute" -- 02/16/10

Most of the series have been about Jack vs Locke, science vs faith, etc. Although Locke is suppose to be dead (dead is dead, right?), I'm not sure if that matters for being the new MiB.

I don't think that I want to see people taking Jacob and MIB's place as it will leave a feeling that nothing has really been resolved.

Good call. Sawyer has demonstrated a transition into the role of protector throughout the series. Even becoming the head of security for Dharma. Mark my words: Sawyer is the hero of this story.

You may want to get use to that feeling quickly.

It's clear that Hawkeye sees Sawyer as Jacob's replacement. This is why he wants him off the island.
