Good catch. I was trying to figure out what that object was and the ankh is a good guess. Not sure either if it help to figure out when the island was sunk, but it seems significant.

In fact, with all the talk of loopholes, and Esau saying he just wants to "go home" immediately gave me this vibe (crazy, crazy theory within, proceed with caution):
Spoiler:

Two fallen angels trying to find their way back into heaven by manipulating humans in some grand loophole scheme. One, the dark haired Bartleby (Affleck) is down for doing whatever is necessary including killing humans, while the light haired Loki (Damon) wants back in and isn't above doing evil, he's just not as ruthless as his cohort.
Yeah, I don't buy this "god" thing either. In fact, the following dialog between Ben and Man in Black would seem to confirm this:

In the statue, Locke moves some of the bodies around. Ben watches and says, "What are you?"

"I'm not a what, Ben, I'm a who."

"You're the monster," Ben says.

"Let's not resort to name calling."

...

"What do you want?"

"Well that's the great irony here, Ben, because I want the one thing that John Locke didn't. I want to go home."
One of Arthur C. Clarke's three laws of prediction states: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." And I think he was very right. No need to invoke deities and the supernatural (or even a couple of out of work angels) in this fight -- sufficiently advanced technology will do.

And from the second part of that quote above, I think it's clear that these guys are travellers far away from some home. Now, if they are indeed travellers, how would they be travelling I wonder? Hmmmmmm.........

all in good fun, right?

2 islands makes perfect sense. The one above water is the white one, and the one below is the blue one. BLUE - UE + ACK = BLACK It totally fits in with the rest of the themes

Of course they're confused -- if it worked, they wouldn't be on the island. But they are so it didn't. What Juliette told Miles makes no sense.

I knew I recognized the man in black. Besides a trillion tv sidegigs, he was in Gone Baby Gone with the Rollie Fingers 'stache.

Terry O'Quinn as The Man in Black in Locke's body laying down a soliloquy about how pathetic his own character was when first coming to the island is an absolute masterpiece of acting gold. Topped off by great directing as he leans into and out of a shaft of light from above, pondering. Ben looks on, helpless.

I knew he was a good actor when I saw The Stepfather in '87 but damn.

I'm read somewhere that the Man in Black's real name is Edward.

People on the island will end up choosing one side or the other. The series will end in massive fight of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. I think they're fighting over a dark haired girl who always seems depressed.

This.

The acting and lighting was brilliant! O'Quinn's facial expression after he says 'I want to go home' is one of the creepiest ones I've seen in a loooooong time. He looks absolutely menacing.

Or that something else got all those Losties back on the island after Oceanic 815 landed in LA.

So what you're saying is that the island has a....CLONE?!

I think you may have something there.

I think it's been posted (documented, or whatever) that Terry was told to play Lock differently (when the switch was made) but wasn't told why.

Yeah, I don't suspect 'the jig was up' until he received the version of the finale script that had the 'fork in the socket' scene in it with the coffin reveal. The directors probably told him to play more confidently/arrogantly.

Interesting. But that still doesn't explain how a wrong assumption started to actually work on those dead blood-sucking freaks.

Probably don't need spoilers but just to finish up, LOL.

Spoiler:
Yeah I was going by memory of them not showing above where it would have been broken. As to your second question, anything could have changed in this 'alternate' timeline so all bets are off there.

ditto
Spoiler:
That's not entirely true. When the new timeline was created in 1977 by Juliet hitting the bomb we see Jack on the plane a bit disoriented as if he just popped into existence. This timeline started with this plane in the air just before the turbulence in 2004. Nothing before Jack & Co. showed up was changed. Only the events on the plane and afterward are different. It's not like the whole world below them is completely different as well.
