The first half is now a free download on iTunes (49 minutes). The second half (41 minutes) is a $0.99 download for standard definition, $1.99 for high definition.

One thing I learned: Taurans are Italian.

I've never seen Battlestar Galactica, but I understand the basic premise. I intend to watch the BG series once it's available on Blu-Ray from Netflix, but I have SyFy HD and I'm wondering if it's a good idea for me to watch this or if I'll be totally lost or have the original series spoiled. Any opinions?

Christ, how many times will this question be asked?

I think 12 times seems appropriate.

It's a stand-alone prequel. Common sense dictates that things may be spoiled. I can think of 5 specific cameos that would tie into the tail end of BSG. 6 others that would spoil things throughout the run of BSG.

There will obviously be references and winks and nudges to those that have seen BSG.

So I'm guessing that Zoe Greystone is responsible for the Cylons having that obsession with the "one true God."

There's a certain irony in these people who become monotheists because they hunger for an absolute standard of right and wrong, and then go on to do things like suicide bombings and genocide. It would appear that they're using the monotheists to represent both the Christianization of pagan Europe and current Islamist terrorism.

Really liked the show but something bothers me. Are we really supposed to believe that Bill Adama was 69 years old at the fall? (This series takes place 58 years before the fall and he's 11 in it.) Seems like at least 10 years too old to me.

Patman 01-25-10 09:34 AM

Re: Caprica -- "Pilot" -- 01/22/10

Bill Adama was to the end of his own career in the fleet, and BSG was being de-commissioned at the start of show. So, him being that old could make sense, plus, who knows if medicine and proper healthy habits kept people from aging too fast, and allowed them to function at a higher capacity than people near their 70's in our time frame.

The second time I watched BSG I noticed several hints and comments relating to the fact that humans in this world age at about a 10-15% slower rate that we earthlings do, which makes sense as even 58 years before the fall of Caprica they are about 30 if not 100 years ahead in technology.

According to the timeline, it's 8 years until the Galactica is "commissioned".

I wonder if we'll see any of it being built?

The time line doesn't work for me. When did the original 5 make the first 7 Cylon models?
Spoiler:
when did they have time to colonize and destroy the original Earth?

Seems like an awful lot to happen in 70 years.

Spoilers are for those that haven't seen the BSG.

I thought it came shortly after the first war vs. Cylons. Isn't that why the first war ended - because the toaster Cylons made contact with the original 5?

Right but that was what 30 years before the BSG series? So in 40 years they went from this first Cylon to being humanoid Cylons and those humanoid Cylons were able to invent resurrection?

But no the more that I think about it the original Earth was already destroyed because the original 5 traveled from there to stop the first Cylon war by giving them resurrection.

Damn it, I think I just went blind.

Another plot hole: 2 full hours and Trixie didn't drop the f-bomb or smoke one cigarette?

The movie has more tits and ass and on screen murder. I don't you are missing much by not seeing. I believe they added a few scenes to the pilot but I don't think it is worth watch if you already watched the dvd. I of coarse watched both and don't regret that I did.

So wait... is there tits and ass on the DVD that isn't on the SyFy broadcast?

Spoiler:
The original Earth was settled and destroyed by the Kobol Cylons. At this point, I'd say the Final Five are already on their way to Twelve Colonies to stop "what happened before from happening again."

Yeah. The parts with the rave scenes had some nudity.

Yeah, that's the way I remember it.

Spoiler:
The "Final Five" were the last survivors of the thirteenth colony called "Earth," who came to prevent the same catastrophe on the other twelve, though they arrived too late to prevent it.

They then managed to negotiate a deal with the Toaster Cylons to help them create fleshy, human-like Cylons, and that's why the war ended.

I can't remember if the Final Five arrived during the war, or if there's enough wriggle room there for them to show up during "Caprica."

I don't watch many sci fi shows but I thought this was pretty interesting. Might have to get around to giving Battlestar Galactica a try.

I want to thank the above posters for explaining the whole cylon timeline thing.

Spoiler:
I swear, I didn't know until now that there were two groups of cylons - those that were created many years earlier and those that are being created in this new series - I just assumed it was Moore re-writing "history" to do the prequel.

Re: Caprica -- "Pilot" -- 01/22/10

Probably not a good sign if we're discussing more about how this fits into the timeline than the actual episode itself. ;)
