MTV to turn "Dawn of the Dead" into a TV Show. No, really.

MTV has just announced plans to create a TV series based loosely on George Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead. And they're dodging the "fast or slow" question by doing both: The zombies will start fast, but decay into slow.
No word on when the show is set to launch, but Slashfilm reports that more news should be coming soon.
MTV isn't the first to try its hand at a zombie TV series. AMC has Frank Darabont working on a series that will be an adaptation of the post-apocalyptic comic The Walking Dead. That show is about a small group who have survived a zombie meltdown and are trying to find a place to live that's safe from the legions of shambling flesh-eaters.
Back in 2007, a group tried to launch a zombie series called Alive with a series of PSAs. Sadly that show never hit the small screen.
Also in 2007, CBS commissioned a pilot for a show called Babylon Fields, which was about a small town adjusting to the zombies in their midst. This was a show I was really looking forward to, and still feel twinges of bitter disappointment that it wasn't made. Apparently some of the show's themes freaked CBS out, including the fact that there were human/zombie couples, which suggested necrophilia. Here's the pilot:

I remember hearing about that Babylon Fields show. Too bad that never made it on the air.
I like the fast zombie decaying into slow idea. That actually makes a bit of sense. Well, as much sense as you can make when talking about zombies. But MTV? That network lost all relevancy for me so many years ago. MTV's involvement automatically makes me nervous about this, but I do love zombies ... I'll just have to wait to see what kind of buzz it gets.

I like zombies as much as the next guy. MTV better know what they are doing (translation: I don't think they know what they are doing). The gore factor in zombie films is a large part of what makes them successful (and enjoyable). Sure, there are thematic elements to be explored as well, but on television ... to stretch the exploration of these themes into an entire season, and without being able to air all the violence and gore ... I just don't think this will translate well. How about "Law & Order: Zombie Victims Unit" instead?

I still think Snyder's remake was a fluke.
This just is a bad idea. Did anyone see the remake to Day of the Dead? It could've been a great remake if they based it upon Romero's original idea, but instead Miner went for the teen crowd and it was a steaming pile of dog shit. Which this series will most likely be.

For my money the original Dawn is the "Citizen Kane" of Zombie movies. Although I dont think Snyders remake is anywhere near as good. I enjoy it for what it is. A pretty good if "pedestrian" zombie movie.
I like the idea of more horror TV shows being produced and Zombie shows in particular. But as someone else mentioned I just wished anyone other than MTV was behind this.
Has MTV ever produced a successful non-reality live action TV series? I know every few years they seem to give it a try and I cant recall it ever working.

I have high hopes for Walking Dead, but for this, not so much. I do thing though that this series will give us the prettiest looking zombies that we've seen so far.

I've been saying it for years and now it's official. First Teen Wolf & now this.
Why don't they put the f**king M back in Music TeleVision unless they changed it to More shit TeleVision without me knowing.

I spend a decent portion of everyday planning ways to survive the coming zombie apocalypse. I have come to the conclusion I may be a zombie nerd.
