Same here. For a minute or two, I actually thought that the season was going to end with no real conflict or cliffhanger to speak of. When I realized what I was seeing, I got goose bumps. This event is going to completely change things for next season.

Well, there were a lot of people hoping that would happen and it seems that they get their wish. I don't know how this gives the show a "clean slate" like I've heard some of the actors/actresses say in recent interviews. It seems that it would leave a whole mess behind.

Because it's all the other complicated relationship stuff in Dexter's life, as he gets closer to becoming a real human being and discovers that he actually cares in his own damaged way, that makes this show interesting. For me the down time this season, even the dreaded Angel / La Guerta stuff, gave the show its pace and made sure the big events of the few episodes really packed a punch.
Awesome episode. I can't wait for next season.

The last thing this show needs is an exact repeat of season one. They already did the Dexter as a loner thing to perfection, and there ain't no turning back.
And the ending was certainly a clean slate, in that it allows them to go in a completely different direction with the show. It certainly won't be a repeat of this season. I wouldn't be surprised if there was no arch villain next season at all.

Wasn't there a plot from an earlier season where Rita's ex-husband's mother tried to get custody of the kids? I don't remember much about it or how it was resolved, but maybe she will try again. It seems like she would have a more clear-cut case now since Dexter is not a biological parent of Astor and Cody.

There's a host of options that lie between villain of the week and a full season of contrived storylines exacerbated by annoying love interest. I may be alone in my opinion, but Rita and her children were always the worst part of the show for me, and seeing them written out will improve the quality of the show by leaps and bounds.

If it becomes a "clean slate" then you're basically disposing of all of the things that Dexter has gone through since he began forming meaningful relationships with others and becoming a father. He might be able to ditch the other two kids off on someone else but he is still the blood father of his son. That is a dynamic that I don't think you can make a clean slate of.
