Ken Ober dead at 52
I just saw on the news that Ken Ober, the host of MTVs Remote Control, passed away. Does anyone have any more information?

Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
I used to love Remote Control, even though in hindsight it kind of heralded MTV's move away from music videos. It launched not only the careers of Adam Sandler, Denis Leary and Colin Quinn (as the CNN article points out), but also Kari Wuhrer.
Wonder what the cause of death was. In any event, way too young to go. |
Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
Damn. I remember watching Remote Control everyday.

Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
Big fan of Remote Control back in the day :(
RIP |

"Kenny wasn't like the other kids (Remote Control)
TV mattered, nothing else did (Remote Control) Girls said yes, but he said no (Remote Control) Now he's got his own game show (Remote Control!)" :rip: Ken |

I enjoyed RC and yes, he was still too young.

Here's some vintage Remote Control clips that we mined from the archive today.

Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
Sad to hear. Curious, like many of you, to learn the details of his passing.

Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
Wikipedia had the cause as a heart attack, but it was later changed.

Is he Dead or Canadian?

Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
Always loved Remote Control. Watching Kari Wurher writhing to Colin's Tone Lōc-esque raps may have been my first sexual experience. And anyone watching Colin's cousin and Trivia Delinquent Stickpin Quinn / aka The Stud Boy could see he was going to go places.
Ken Ober's parent's basement at 72 Whooping Cough Lane will never be the same. |

Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
Kari Wurher had bad face job done which changed her appearance in low budget movies.

I, too, loved Remote Control. I was very sad and shocked to hear about Ober's death.

Marisol, Kari, then Alicia Coppola.

Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
When I was 19, I had a friend who was on the show in season 4, and so a bunch of us went to see her taping. She ended up winning a trip to Cancun by setting the record for the fastest bonus round win.
A friend and I had so much fun during the taping that we decided to keep going back, over and over, that summer. The show used to shoot 4-5 episodes a day at a studio in Spanish Harlem. We got to hang out with Colin and several of the production folks a lot, and Mark Cohen, who used to do audience warmup. (People would ask, when they saw Alicia, "What happened to Kari?" and his standard response was "She spontaneously combusted at a Slayer concert.") We actually were in the audience shots so many times that they started asking us to sit in the back during certain cutaways. We were invited to the wrap party, but couldn't go because we left on vacation a few days before. They also gave us a Zenith multibrand remote, which back in 1989 was a pretty cool and expensive toy. Lots of fun, and a great way to spend the summer after our first year of college. |
Re: Ken Ober dead at 52
MTV is currently airing a couple episodes of Remote Control in honor of Ober.

I can't believe prizes included audio cassettes and 110 cameras. Those sucked even in 1987. |
