The Prisoner (AMC miniseries) -- "Arrival" -- 11/15/09

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
A man, known as Six, finds himself inexplicably trapped in The Village with no memory of how he arrived. As he explores his environment, he discovers that his fellow inhabitants are identified by number instead of name, have no memory of any prior existence, and are under constant surveillance. Not knowing whom to trust, Six is driven by the need to discover the truth behind The Village, the reason for his being there, and most importantly -- how he can escape.

This is a remake of the classic British series, set to run six episodes. Looks pretty good from the previews (which AMC has been showing like crazy the last couple of weeks).

It's been getting bad reviews, but I'll still tune in. Not setting my expectations high, since I'm not expecting it to match the quality of the original.

Re: The Prisoner (AMC miniseries) -- "Arrival" -- 11/15/09

I recently watched the orignal for the first time, after watching the entire run of Danger Man over the last several months. I enjoyed the beginning, but I have to believe they will not follow the original's ending. I've read the ending was very rushed or maybe McGoohan was heavily medicated, but either way I don't think such nonsense would fly today.

One thing that bothers me from the description above:
Spoiler:
It says The Village residents have "no memory of any prior existence". That would run completely counter to the entire premise of the original, which is that they are in The Village precisely because they have knowledge too valuable to be let free. The fact that every resident has secrets is very important, as much of the series was about mutual trust/distrust.

I've also read that they are tweaking the theme of the original:
Spoiler:
The orignal was about individualism vs collectivism, but the remake is more about the evils of capitalism according to this article.

I'll definitely be checking this out. It looks like it has the production value of a major feature film.

The 2nd episode airing tonight is "Harmony"

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

Six is prescribed "talking cure" therapy, but does his best to resist having psychiatrists mess with his mind. He also learns he has an unusual occupation and a family that includes a brother and a sister-in-law, plus their two children. Six later encounters a woman who swears she once heard splashing from "the big water," and the two of them and his brother go in search of it.

Looks like it's 6 episodes over the next 3 nights.

Yeah I didn't think it was bad. The fact that it's all airing over 3 nights makes it easier to jump into even if it does end up being crap.

But all I really expect of The Prisoner is a bit of a mind fuck, and this was, so I'm happy for now.

I'm recording the six episodes too.

I'm not sure when I'm going to watch them though.

Same here. I don't think I'd want to watch a whole season of this, but three nights should be fun.

The apparitions of 2 towers in the desert, a not so thinly veiled incorporation of the World Trade Center into the story.

Re: The Prisoner (AMC miniseries) -- "Arrival" -- 11/15/09

As a long-time fan of the original, I was disappointed in the first two episodes. The quality of the writing and the dialogue are not remotely comparable to the classic version. They also seem to have changed the inherent characterization of 6. The new 6 is apparently not as clever or well-planned as the original. It seems the main new element added to the story is the idea of terrorism and how its possibility would affect the populace. A very derivative idea from current times, considering the 60's show is one of the most groundbreaking shows of all-time with its subversive themes.

I've only watched the first ep so far. Sightly disappointed for the reason I stated in my spoiler above, that by having everyone be brainwashed/have amnesia they take away a lot from the original, especially from Number 6. I still don't know exactly where they are going though, so I can't really judge.

I have to agree. The original series is one of my all-time favorite shows. This new one just doesn't have the wit that the original had. Well, that's among other problems. I just feel like this new version is trying SO hard, and it shows. The original was effortlessly surreal. This one wants so badly to be seen as trippy. There were a couple of moments that I know were meant to be mind blowing or meditative but just made me laugh, especially with the musical pairing.

I love Ian McKellan and think he makes a fine No. 2, but at the same time, I miss the revolving door of No. 2s. I'll stick with it since there are only a couple more nights. At least it's not a total loss; the original probably wouldn't have been released on Blu-ray this soon had it not been for this remake.

Re: The Prisoner (AMC miniseries) -- "Arrival" -- 11/15/09

God help these people if Patrick McGoohan comes back from the dead. For those who have never seen the original, this has done a huge disservice to the original.

Starting the show off with a teaser that looked like Planet Of The Apes Visit Iraq was just silly. Providing a backstory with disjointed flashbacks did nothing to help matters. Demonstrating that an intelligence operative is one step removed from a graffiti artist was just bizarre. 2 comes off as a well paid drug pusher. Is the logo for the Village someone giving us the finger?

This is what everyone feared and their fears were correct. It's easy to see that for the next five years those involved with this fiasco will hear one question repeated over and over, "What were you thinking?".
