What do you mean suddently?
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut did the "aboot" joke first and that was in 1999! In fact, the SP: BLU joke was a bit more personal as the newscaster bursts out laughing and mocks the Canadian Prime Minister for saying "aboot."

Yes - we're on the metric system, but the football fields are still measured in yards. They should've referenced the 110 yard field instead - it would've made more sense.
