Southland----Cancelled
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...6995676fddc5cc
It's the end of the road for drama "Southland," which has been canceled before the launch of its sophomore season. Production on the John Wells-produced cop series is being shut down after six episodes. "Southland," from Warner Bros. TV, was originally slated to debut in its new Friday 9 p.m. time slot during premiere week, but in August, NBC opted to push the start to Oct. 23 and air "Dateline NBC" in the meantime. "Dateline NBC" will now continue to run in the Friday 9 p.m. hour. It is not clear when the six produced new episodes of "Southland" will air. "Southland," created by Ann Biderman, got off to a good start when it premiered in midseason in the Thursday 10 p.m. time period, succeeding NBC's long-running medical drama, "ER," also exec produced by Wells. Additionally, "Southland" garnered solid reviews, but through its initial run last spring, the series showed ratings erosion. Then came the Jay Leno factor, with NBC forced to shift its 10 p.m. dramas to 9 p.m. to make room for "The Jay Leno Show." While "Southland" has enjoyed strong support among NBC brass, after screening the finished episodes from the upcoming second season, the show's content was deemed too dark and gritty for broadcast TV, especially for 9 p.m. There is a possibility for the series to be shopped to cable networks. The cancellation of "Southland" ends (for now) a long relationship between NBC and Wells, who has been behind some of NBC's biggest series, including "ER" and "The West Wing," for the past 15 years. It hasn't been a good start for NBC's scripted dramas this fall, with rookies "Trauma" and "Mercy" struggling along with most of the returning veterans, including "Heroes" and "Law & Order: SVU," which is still settling into its new Wednesday 9 p.m. slot. Booo!!!! NBC sucks!! I hope they at least put the 6 produced episodes on Hulu.com |
Re: Southland----Cancelled
Too dark and gritty for broadcast TV? Gee if they only had the 10pm hour available.

Re: Southland----Cancelled
The produced episodes were "Too Dark and Gritty for Broadcast TV"
Give me a fucking break. The show was already watered down with the bleeping. I was so looking forward to the 2nd season. I think WB should try to sell this show to TNT. This would be a perfect summer 10-13 episode series. |
Re: Southland----Cancelled
WTF?

Re: Southland----Cancelled
Fucking bullshit.

Re: Southland----Cancelled
Mercy just dodged a bullet. This will give it a little bit more of a chance of surviving. All of the shows done in the Ben Silverman era, except Chuck, have now been canceled.

Re: Southland----Cancelled
I usually understand the reasons for most shows getting cancelled, but this is fucking horseshit. This was probably one of the best 1 hour dramas that debuted last spring. The fucking suits decided to drop it without letting even 1 episode air for the 2nd season.

The real reason is they likely want to shed any shit from the BS (pun intended) era. Chuck is the only thing they have left...but they can't do squat since Subway put a ton of money into the show (same with FNL and Directv). So, no worries about Chuck getting canned early. |
Re: Southland----Cancelled
I'm kinda surprised... but then again, not really.

Re: Southland----Cancelled
I always thought this show had a Boomtown vibe
At least they burned off the six-episode season 2 of Boomtown on Saturday night. |

Re: Southland----Cancelled
I know its not NBC, but didn't Fox only air 1 or 2 episodes of the second season Tru Calling before canning it?

Re: Southland----Cancelled
Here's what Michael Cudlitz (Cooper) had to say on Twitter:
http://twitter.com/Cudlitz "Don't go quietly........ People need to know when they fuck up this big. Saw ep 2.1 ........ Dumb fuckin people. Lol" "Call NBC and ask them where the promos are........ I am serious." |
Re: Southland----Cancelled
Are you kidding?
I don't think I'll ever watch another cop show set in LA Again. FFS! Robbery Homicide then Boomtown then Life now Southland that's horse shit!!1 |
Re: Southland----Cancelled
You should have watched The Shield. Cop drama. Set in LA. Full, satisfying run.

Re: Southland----Cancelled
This sucks.

Re: Southland----Cancelled
I never watched (still have the pilot from iTunes); sorry for those that enjoyed the first season. :( I do hope this is good news for Chuck. :) I'm on a mission to keep passing around a copy of the S1 dvds!

Re: Southland----Cancelled
The newest story has a quote from John Wells, the EP of Southland:
"I'm disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success," Wells said. "We remain extremely proud of 'Southland' and are actively looking for another home for the series." I think Wells is really biting his tongue right now. I hope he and WB can indeed find a new network, preferrably cable who will take on this show. If Wells is smart, he will never ever have anymore dealings with NBC with his future projects. |
Re: Southland----Cancelled
What about USA? Or is it even too edgy for there?

Re: Southland----Cancelled
I'm pretty bummed about this. I know that the Jay Leno thread is filled with people who are against his show, and for the first time I am really pissed that his show has caused the demise of one of my favorites.
A cop was left for dead on the doorstep of a neighbor's house at the end of season one, are they going to leave it like that? |
Re: Southland----Cancelled
From Deadline Hollywood
NBC has axed Southland... I hear Trauma is next because of its ridiculouly excessive $3 million pricetag an episode. (When I screened the show, I was rooting for the helicopter to kill off every character...) My NBC insiders are letting Angela Bromstad off the hook, saying "she picked the best of shit" from Ben Silverman's failed development. "This is the last gift that keeps on giving from Ben Silverman." The insiders are even going so far as to give up on the rest of the primetime schedule for their network. "There's nothing watchable the rest of the year." Even midseason and spring of 2010? "Nothing watchable the rest of the season," I'm told. "Maybe Jerry Seinfeld's The Marriage Ref will work, but he's not even in it. This is not a fun place to be right now. And we committed to Jay Leno on the air for 2 years because he was worried we'd have an itchy trigger finger. It's an embarrassment for all of us. Maybe he'll get fed up -- he's not right now -- and then we can re-negotiate." This is beyond sad. It's the destruction of a brand. Thankfully, I don't see Chuck getting canned. |

NBC owns USA, so I doubt it. I don't think FX has the budget to pay for it. I think TNT would be better suited since they probably have a bigger programming budget amongst all the cable networks.
