Re: Question: when did Thursday night become the big TV night?
It seems each network had a different night for the powerhouse lineup. Thursday for NBC. ABC ruled Tuesday from the time of Happy Days/Laverne & Shirley/Welcome Back Kotter/Mork & Mindy/Barney Miller clear up to the days of Home Improvement and Roseanne. CBS started with saturdays, MASH/Mary Tyler Moore/Bob Newhart/All In the Family in the 70s, then switched to monday in the 80s: MASH/Alice/All In The Family/Lou Grant/Jeffersons/Bob Newhart/Designing Women/Murphy Brown/One Day At A Time/WKRP.
Taxi was also a big Thursday show. Can't remember which network(s) it was.

For example, in the '70s, these hit shows ran for a season or more on Saturday night:
All in the Family
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Bob Newhart Show
The Carol Burnett Show
M*A*S*H
The Jeffersons
Then it became publicly frowned upon to stay at home and watch TV on a Saturday night, so as the audience started shrinking, the networks stopped scheduling their biggest shows on Saturdays and instead started treating it as a dumping ground by the early '80s. And that's when the powerhouse lineups started showing up on other nights, like Thursday night.
