There's no Netflix search on Xbox. They have a couple categories (Drama, Comedy, TV, Thriller, Sci-Fi, Newly Available, etc). Each has about 100 movies listed. It's good enough to find something worth watching. But if you're looking for something in particular, it sucks.
You need to go through Netflix and add items to your Instant Queue.

I actually figured that out once. If I got an iTunes Season Pass for every show I watched in a year, it would cost about the same as 8 months of cable/satellite.

Yeah, that's really the best way to do it. The Xbox menu is good for impluse viewing. But you need to fill up your Instant Queue on the Netflix website.

I'm going to miss the 5.1 sound while watching TV. My laptop doesn't output 5.1 through HDMI. Fuck you Dell.

Technically the deal is only meant for PAX attendees. They aren't exactly requiring you to prove it, so it's up to you.

Grats! I canceled cable (for the most part) last year and haven't looked back. Now I wonder what on earth I even watched. I still have "basic analog cable"--it's only $12/month. I figured since I still needed cable service for my Internet and phone, I might as well get the basic feed so I don't have to entirely rely on hulu, etc. And with a Tivo, it's a charm. My entire high-speed Internet, landline with unlimited long distance AND basic cable is only $75/month.
You may want to check and see if your provider offers some kind of super-basic service for about $12. That'll save you a LOT of time and trouble rather than having to download all the time, etc.

Hmm, link still works for me. Might have just been temporary?
If it still doesn't work and people want to get the cheaper price, the coupon code to use is PAX1999

If that's cable broadband, I actually thought that was a little on the cheap side.
I canceled my cable several years ago and from time to time contemplate contacting my cable company to see what they have to offer for digital TV with a DVR. But I don't, and probably won't. Mainly because I know whatever deal they offer will be an "introductory" deal and regardless how little it costs it would go up to full price in a few months. And, for as much as I work, it's really not worth it to me to spend all that money on TV for a month when I am lucky if I can watch TV for two hours each day.

My bill is about 60 after taxes for broadband and the basic network cable. I called once to see if I could get a deal, maybe on RoadRunner, but he said "Since all you have is the bare minimum, we really don't have a deal for you - but we could upgrade you to Digital tier for 99$".
None of my family really misses it.
If anything, I'd get the basic Netflix membership to have access to new releases and Xbox streaming.
If you want to have the option, you could always cancel - if you decided you wanted cable again, I'm sure the cable company would be out there very quickly with a new box.

This Play On thing is freaking amazing. I think I'll be calling to scale back my cable tomorrow because I don't need premium movie channels any more with this. It's not like I watch any of the series, and I think I've watched the movies Starz and HBO air frequently about a million times now anyway.

I haven't had cable in over 10 years. With OTA and DVDs, I watched everything I really wanted. Now that I have a Roku box, I'm checking out all sorts of shows, and have stopped using OTA altogether.

I pay that much a month for internet AND expanded basic cable.
My speeds are generally around 15-20MBPS, so I am happy with that.
Lots of shows available Hulu, Fox, CBS, etc. If it weren't for certain news channels, I'd dump cable altogether myself.
Oh, and we have netflix as well.

I loved getting rid of my cable years ago; spent waaaay too much time watching nonsense. I do miss the college football and NHL games, but that's life. Plus it's a treat when OTA games come on in HD for the big-screen anyway.
And my cable internet is over $50 alone, couldn't afford luxury-tv anyway. No cheaper DSL option where I live unfortunately (old phone lines, they say).

I think PlayOn is useful for Hulu users if you don't like watching stuff on your computer screen and have some DVR conflicts with your favorite shows that they carry. It's also useful for those who don't have/can't afford cable or satellite and want to watch shows from FX, USA or SyFy. But, you will have to wait the 7-8 day grace period though.

Re: Well, I cancelled cable
If you pay $60 a month for cable, you're paying $720 a year for cable. If your shows have 24 episode seasons (to keep the numbers round), you could buy full seasons for 10 shows for what you pay for cable. I'm sure that's plenty for a lot of people, and it would be plenty for just about anybody if we're talking cable shows that would have 12 episode average seasons (so 20 series) with broadcast TV network shows coming in by antenna.

I myself am this close to getting rid of my cable. Pretty much everything I watch can be caught online or streamed from my PC to my TV.
The only thing is that the Tivo is so freaking convenient. But it will be gone soon - maybe I'll first call their "customer-retention" department and see if they can cut me a deal before I cancel.

Re: Well, I cancelled cable
Obviously people have different reasons for getting/watching satellite and cable. For me, it's not just about watching 4-5 12-16 episode cable dramas a year. I also use to watch News (CNN), The Travel Channel, Discovery, Sports (ESPN, MLB Network, NFL, FSN) and a few other entertainment channels as well. If you pretty much only watch OTA programming on the big 3 networks, then yeah probably spending 60-70 bucks or more for this isn't worth it. I work in the entertainment industry (Sports) and I find the money that I spend on it (around 70-80 bucks a month) more than worth it to keep me up to date with the world, sports and pop culture and a few cool cable shows on TNT or USA. So, I don't think it's a waste of money at all.
