I'm surprised "The Avengers" is on TCM.....was it THAT good?!

I'm used to primo programming on TCM, knowing that anything they play, it is because they feel privileged to play it.

AMC used to be primo programming, until they slopped it up by playing movies wrought of cheap comedy of the 1990's (not that there's anything wrong with that - but just not on AMC), so then AMC ceased being "primo programming."

I never saw "The Avengers," the 1998 film starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman, so I can't judge it on its merit, but I don't recall it being...well, "primo." In fact, I think words like "forgettable" come to mind about this film. "Unnecessary" was another. And I like Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman.

Maybe it's an error on the programmer, and it isn't going to come on...time will tell.

TCM is showing The Avengers from 1942, starring Deborah Kerr.

you're right - but the on-screen programmer announced the wrong version.

/\ My onscreen guide (Charter Communications) had the 1998 version listed as well.

Yeah TCM thankfully hasn't gone the AMC route. You'd think that with an award winning tv series, AMC would try to go higher brow again, but I'm sure Jaws: The Revenge is back in heavy rotation.

You mean Robert Osborne or the voiceover guy that tells you what's on next.

I think it'd be pretty funny if Osborne seriously introduced the '98 Avengers film.

TCM airs movies at least as bad as The Avengers ('98) regularly.

I've seen Plan 9 From Outer Space but they're a bit more selective on what they air.

Some of the serials they will show, like the Ma and Pa Kettle movies, are pretty bad. They have nostalgia value but that's about it.

That's what TCM specializes in - nostalgia or not that's what their main programming library consists of.

You can't compare Ma and Pa Kettle serials to full length feature films from the '90s like The Avengers.

This month is summer under the stars. Red Skelton's career began in the '30s, so they showcased most of his work. TCM doesn't pride itself on only showing films that have won awards. They have Sunday Night Silents every week to showcase films with historical value.

I don't see how anybody can compare any of this to random crap from the past 10 years. They've even shown modern masterpieces like Spirited Away, but I've never seen them showing a legitimate turd from recent years. If they ever air The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I'll take that back.

What's this Deborah Kerr crap? I set my DVR expecting Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman in The Avengers, one of the most thrilling films of 1998. TCM is really dropping the ball here. I don't know if I can say they're really showing primo programming anymore.
