Re: Holy Crap! Darabont to adapt 'The Walking Dead' for AMC
The original material is by no stretch of the imagination perfect, especially the further it goes along. I'd like to see the early issues handled somewhat faithfully as those are the strongest, but I'm all for taking liberties after that. Depressingly, Frank Darabont has already said how excited he was to get to the neverending Governor storyline, and that's kinda where the comics really went off the rails for me. The characters flatten out, the cast gets kinda bloated, it gets caught in these repetitive loops where the same things keep happening (Rick going back/forth being nuts and bitching/moaning about not being a great leader/father/whatever every step of the way...new characters being a lot less interesting than the ones they're replacing...SHOCKING confessions about people's dark, dark pasts...that "wait, didn't I read this already?" virtually identical scene with a zombie kid being kept by his/her parents), and just about everything after a while with the Governor is fucking stupid. It stops being a character piece, the tension keels over, and it's just a matter of which gasp-inducing shocking deaths we're gonna see in this story arc. There's a lot of wheel-spinning, and I don't think that'll fly in a zombie TV series.
I mean it is a character piece about people surviving a zombie apocalypse; people will go nuts, people will try and keep zombie loved-ones alive, people will have done sick-shit to survive and will feel bad about it. Name a character that'd be a fresh and original person to realistically add to the cast and we'll happily vote on if your idea is better then what we got already in the book. Without all the wheel-spinning it'd really just be one "shocking death" over and over again and the book would sorta just run out after 3 or 4 pages.

Name one ongoing comic book series that doesn't repeat themes? That's like complaining that Spider-man is lame because he's rescuing people and fighting bad guys way to much.

My guess is the actors themselves will lead to some changes. Carl aging will change things, and an especially dynamic actor in a side role might make one of the TV characters more popular than their comic counterpart and earn a bigger part in the show.
And then there are contracts. Robert Kirkman can drop or bring back characters at a moments' notice, but contracts will be more rigid than that. Or the actor who plays Tyrese might become the next Will Smith and decide he wants out of TV.
With a book like Sandman or Preacher with a set ending, I could see following them rigidly for a TV series. But Kirkman has talked about The Walking Dead in open-ended terms. It's not building toward any kind of set ending. I think it wouldn't be smart to approach making a Walking Dead TV show the way you would one of those books.

Kirkman is all for the changes made to the show so far. He said in one interview that the mediums have different needs so he'd rather they make the changes needed to create a good show then to make something 100% faithful.
I expect the Rick vs. mayor fight not to end like it does in the book just because of the special effect needed to be kept up over the course of the series (kept vague to avoid spoilers). I don't think the children/baby deaths will be tackled the way they were in the book do to it being pretty harsh for TV.

My point was not that they shouldn't make changes. My point was just because the long running Comic was successful that's no guarantee that a long term TV series will see the same amount of success.
But don't get me wrong, I certainly hope it does see success.

Yep, it's a crap-shoot if it'll be a hit or not. Hopefully the "buzz will give it a boost. As for being faithful? No clue on if that is a good thing or not... Watchmen almost tried too hard in that regard and it didn't pay off and that source material is about as good as it gets.

They showed a scene from this on the Spike "Scream 2010" show the other night. The CGI blood on the one scene they showed was very obvious, and not well done at all.

I thought the same thing Groucho. But, Spartacus: B&S kind of had the same problem, but in the end I don't think it detracted from the experience that much.

A couple of my friends saw the first two eps already and said it was unbelieveably phenomenal. They were blown away. I can't wait!

How many episodes is this supposed to run? And is it something that could be multi-season?

Season 1 is 6 episodes.
Season 2 has pretty much already been greenlit.
It can go on for quite a while.

My guess is it will follow like they did with breaking bad. 6 episodes the 1st season. If it gets next season order, which it undoubtedly will, it'll get the traditional cable 13 episode order.

Wasn't Breaking Bad's initial season cut short due to the writer's strike? I don't think the shortened season was planned (could be wrong).
Surprised this is only 6 episodes -- high production costs?

Saw the pilot and I am impressed. Great direction, excellent score, makeup and effects and a great job of casting. I believe AMC has another winner on their hands.
But, I can see people who are not familiar with the comic being totally disappointed. It is slow moving and the trailers make it seem like it is non-stop action.
Bring on episode #2!
