I thought this was totally scrapped... Are they going to keep trying with somebody other than Mulroney?

Also, I don't understand all the love for Holloway

It appears that David Shore is no longer involved and a new writer is attached.

David Boreanaz has to be one of the most successful actors from the Buffy universe. He seems to be always working consistently.

5 seasons of Angel
12 seasons of Bones. Yes, that show was on 12 seasons on FOX
and later 7 seasons of SEAL team on CBS and Paramunt+

Casting him as the lead is pretty much a lock this gets picked up.

There are people that dismiss Boreanaz, but you don't put together two decades of starring on TV shows by sucking.

As an actor he doesn't not have the biggest range, but he has charisma and very charming smile, so pretty much like James Garner, so he's a better fit than a lot of other actors in those TV remakes, but I'm not sold on the whole concept of those remakes.
Shows like Rockford, Ironside, MacGyver or Magnum worked because of a unique character embodied by a certain actor. It's not an ensemble like S.W.A.T. or Hawaii Five-O. Those shows were easier to remake.

Boreanaz is in rarified air, especially nowadays. Not many actors can truthfully claim that they were on four successful shows. Just those four account for over 25 years. Going by broadcast dates he worked consistently on those shows from 1997 to 2024 with a small gap here and there. I can see him pulling off the "charm" of Jim Rockford pretty damn well, honestly.

James Garner’s daughter supports the new iteration and Boreanaz called her to let her know.

He's not a good actor but doesn't cause problems as a lead star, while supposedly polling highly with certain female demographics. That's enough in today's fractured audience to have a long, steady career.

His closest comp from an earlier era is a poor man's Michael Landon.

Re: The Rockford Files remake in development with star David Boreanaz

I was a little young for those shows in the 70s (although I recently watched Police Story, and wow was that a groundbreaking show), but how is one private detective show different from the other? Like, what separates Rockford Files from Cannon, Mannix, Barnaby Jones, Banacek, Columbo, Harry O, or Baretta? Ben Folds Five songs?

That said, if they do revive it, they gotta keep that synth-driven theme song. THAT I remember.

The lead

Jim Garner was Rockford
Peter Falk was Columbo

Hard to redo shows when the actor in the original role essentially was the character

Which in a way, is kinda my point. Isn't this then just a private eye show, with David Boreanaz in the lead, that just happens to have the same name as a popular 70s show? Why bother with the name then?

I agree.

Although I would have liked to have seen Ruffalo's take on Columbo

I could totally picture Ruffalo in the wrinkled trench coat saying "Just one more thing..."

Because "just another private eye show" does not get people talking about it.

Re: The Rockford Files remake in development with star David Boreanaz

..Emily Deschanel is also set to star in a new series.

Boreanaz's former co-star Emily Deschanel has received her own lead in the network's untitled drama pilot from Dean Georgaris (Quantum Leap) and John Fox (The Equalizer).

NBC had ordered the pilot in January, which will be produced by Universal Studio Group's Universal TV.

The untitled show's logline notes it follows "a trailblazing psychologist who challenges the field of criminology by shifting the investigative focus to the victim rather than just the perpetrator in order to uncover the crucial clues that more traditional methods leave behind. Alongside her team, this pioneering expert consults with the FBI to solve the most baffling and elusive cases."
Deschanel is set to play Professor Georgia Ryan, who is inspired by the real-life work of expert profiler and author Dr. Ann Burgess.

So her character is a scientist...who was created by an author who is also that kind of scientist in real life...who leads a team of scientific experts...and works with the FBI to solve crimes?

I'm not sure she's up to the task.

The new Jim Rockford is going to be a veteran, who is also an ex-con, who is also a vampire.

David Boreanaz is no James Garner. That show was a success mainly because of his charm; it was definitely an actor-driven piece.

I will give it a shot. Angel, Boothe and the character on the SEAL show he can not just play David Boreanaz all of the time.

Does it matter these days? They squeezed out several seasons of rebooted MacGyver with a horrible actor leading it. And rebooted Magnum PI and Hawaii 5-0 both were pale imitations of the originals that lasted way longer than I thought they would.

I'll watch the first season of this just because I want to see Boreanaz' take on the role. Even if its a disaster (which Im sure it won't be) they will get at least 3 seasons out of this.

I have no strong feelings about DB either way, but he's starred in 3 TV series and has been on TV for over 20 years, so he must have a fan base.
