I was just watching Stephen Colbert on Letterman and it occurred to me that I've never seen the guy do any interviews out of character. He's always playing "Stephen Colbert" the faux-conservative talking head from the Colert Report. Has he ever done anything as himself since he started his own show?

Yeah, I think he was on Charlie Rose and/or Larry King. He's also broken character on numerous occasions on the show when something truly absurd happens.

There was a magazine interview in 2005 juuuuust before he started his own show that showed a heartfelt, loving family man who had a deep friendship with Jon Stewart and a passion for politics and satire. I wish I could remember what magazine that was, because the interview was amazing. It was clear that he and Stewart were upset they wouldn't be working on the same show together anymore and that it was a hard transition behind the scenes.

I've seen him out of character this year. He started playing the angry liberal. I didn't really care, other than the fact that it wasn't funny.

He interviewed out of character with Tim Russert for a portion of Meet the Press. I don't know if that part was aired, I watched it online.

Of course he is an angry liberal. Why else would he be the star of a show that is a parody of a neo con news program?

But every once in a while, I bet he doesn't. And it's awesome.

He did an interview with NPR last year, it was about an hour and he was completely out of character. It was weird.

I think kvr was referring to Colbert breaking character on his show.

This. It made him difficult to watch simply because he became Bill Maher.

He seems to have realized it recently and the latest episodes have been pretty good, to his credit.

I remember that interview and recall thinking how strange it is to discover that a political pundit--satirical or no--is in fact a thoughtful human being.
