Re: Lost -- "Dead is Dead" -- 04/08/09
Lostpedia has a good writeup on 'the incident'.
I think the bolded part is fairly important, as the Swan station was always supposed to have another room with a computer in it. This is the room which was blocked off by concrete. It was in the Lost: Via Domus game. I think it's possible the losties try and use that computer for something other than it's attended purpose. Remember, Radzinsky will eventually remove frames from the orientation film that pertain to the computer.
The Incident was an electromagnetic anomaly that apparently caused a catastrophic event that resulted in the DHARMA Initiative establishing the Swan station's protocol. The Incident was first mentioned by Dr. Marvin Candle in the Swan Orientation film. ("Orientation") The Incident occured due to a system failure of the Swan reactor in the Incident Room.
During the Swan Orientation Film, Dr. Marvin Candle mentioned that there was "an incident" which resulted in the creation of a protocol that required a code to be entered every 108 minutes. The incident involved a leak in the containment associated with an electromagnetic anomaly. The leak caused an unspecified charge to build up within the anomaly. As the charge built up, the magnetic field associated with the anomaly grew. After 108 minutes, the magnetic field was large enough to damage the Swan station. This incident most likely occurred before 1980, the production date of the film. ("What Kate Did")
Dr. Marvin Candle issues a strict warning not to use the computer for communication with the outside world. He goes on to say that failure to comply will compromise the integrity of the project and could result in another incident. Candle also seems to indicate that the incident occurred shortly after the Swan station began operations. ("What Kate Did")
It is unknown exactly what caused the incident to occur or what kind of damage it caused. The protocol was created so that the magnetic anomaly could be discharged every 108 minutes, thus preventing an electromagnetic catastrophe. Failure to comply with this protocol leads to a system failure. There is a failsafe mechanism in place below the floor of the computer room that will destroy the Swan and permanently and safely seal the electromagnetic anomaly. ("Live Together, Die Alone")

The look and design for the "Incident Room" came from never before seen blueprints given to the developers by the Lost crew for the game. Although the game has been stated to be non-canon, the designs are the creators' intended layout for the blocked sections of the Swan station.

Does anyone know why Desmond didn't look into the future to see that Ben was going to attack his wife and prevent it? He looked surprise to see Ben there. Did anyone notice that Ben did not help him with his groceries either?

In that case, I disagree. Lost is meant to be a show that fans can argue over and dissect. It's a complicated and complex series. That's part of the reason why it is so much fun to watch.

Eventually some fan with a lot of free time is going to recut Lost so that every scene plays in sequential order. For all we know the story might not even be interesting then! The fun may be in them showing us parts of the story a little at a time and trying to figure out what is going on.

I just beat Lost:Via Domus and although it wasn't horrible(just incredibly disappointing), the coolest thing was getting to see The Incident Room. Entering the numbers in the hatch was a close second.
Anyways, this episode was phenomenal. The more Ben and Locke, the better. As far as I'm concerned, no episode focusing on the two of them has been less than steller.
I am glad to see Desmond again. I was holding my breath through that entire scene. I was sure Penny was a goner, but now that she's not, I'm curious to know how they're gonna get Des back to the island. Unless as previously stated, we haven't seen the whole story, which is very possible.
So, outside of the questionable Smokie effects and those awful wigs, it was very satisfying.
