Jesse Stone: Thin Ice (Starring Tom Selleck) -- 3/1/09

Photobucket

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

Tom Selleck stars as New England police chief Jesse Stone in the fifth installment of the TV-movie series. Jesse is investigated by Boston's Internal Affairs after he's involved in a gunfight that leaves his friend, Commander Healy, seriously wounded. Back in Paradise, Jesse agrees to help a distraught mom search for her missing child. Rose: Kathy Baker. Dr. Dix: William Devane.

This is the 5th Jesse Stone TV movie. Why the hell doesn't CBS just make this into a series? As far as I know, all these movies have done really well in the ratings. I really like this character and I think this show would make a great weekly procedural.

The 6th Jesse Stone movie "No Remorse" will premiere later this year.

If your unfamiliar with the previous movies, here they are:

Stone Cold
Jesse Stone: Night Passage (prequel to Stone Cold that introduces character)
Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise
Jesse Stone: Sea Change (weakest one IMO)

I'm a huge Spenser fan, and I love the Robert Urich version of the Sepnser character, but for some reason I've never been able to get into Jesse Stone.

Urich Spenser is good, but i liked the Joe Mantegna Spenser A&E did a few movies with as well. Either of these could be a series and i would watch. They arent your normal cop procedural.

15M viewers. That's pretty damn good.

http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/03/celeb...e-ratings.html

The Tom Selleck movie "Jess Stone: Thin Ice" (15.1 million, 2.2/5) was one of those instances where the adult demo rating and the total viewer number tell wildly different stories. The movie placed last among the major broadcast networks in the ratings and was down 12% from the franchise's previous installment "Sea Change." Yet the movie was also the most-watched program of the night and gave CBS the win among total viewers Sunday night.

Mantegna Spenser never clicked for me. Joe Mantegna is just too far from my mental picture of who Spenser is, so I could never accept that I was watching a Spenser movie.

Are you talking about the cheesy 80's series Spenser for Hire? Is it the same writer as these Jesse Stone novels?

Yes, Robert B. Parker writes both. He also has a series about a female detective named Sunny Randall that has crossed over into the other two series at some point.

I actually asked after the fourth movie got good ratings why they didn't make a series out of this. I believe that someone replied that Selleck didn't want to make the move to the Northern area where the movies are made. I'm sure that even with the low demos that CBS would be glad to make a series out of this property given the continually strong overall ratings.

Ironically, Sunny Randall was the only one of the three characters written specifically to be filmed, even though there hasn't been a Sunny Randall movie or TV show yet -- Parker created the character for Helen Hunt.

I think your right. The movies are shot in Nova Scotia Canada even though it's set in Massachusetts. I don't think Selleck would want to re-locate to Canada for 6 month a year.
