Re: OSCARS 81st Annual Academy Awards
I don't follow current movies/Hollywood, particularly ones that tend to get nominated for Oscars.
Usually, I don't see a 'new' movie until a few years after initial release. I only went to the movies 3 times in '08.

that was an utter trainwreck. I could hear Nathan Lane screaming from the rafters "Make it Gayer!"
I thought the little bits of best of 2008 montages: action, comedy were lame.
the best awards presenters were Tina and Steve - I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt.

The only musical numbers on an Oscar show should be performances of the nominated songs. And we should be able to hear the whole songs. With the original singers.
That said, I did like Queen Latifa singing "I'll Be Seeing You" during the Farewell segment -- classy.

They have to make them the 2010 host! Funniest part of the evening.
I enjoyed the musical numbers of the nominated songs as well, but that John Legend mash-up at the end was horrible.
Yeah, Queen Latifah's performance was beautiful.

They should have had a steady shot of the In Memoriam clip for the home audience.

yes they should have. So since Ledger had won the Oscar there wasn't a need for him to be in Memoriam?? I don't get the logic.
the first montage of the night had the mic of the stage managers still on, as the curtains were attempting to open, you could hear him get upset, at least he didn't utter an expletive.

I love that they included Vampira though.

I liked Shirley MacLaine's speech for Anne Hathaway. It felt sincere and Hathaway's reaction was one of real appreciation. Marion Cotillard's speech for Kate Winselt was good, too. Nicole Kidman's bit for Angelina Jolie was lacking, though. May have been better if Kidman had bothered to memorize it instead of reading straight from the teleprompter.

Re: OSCARS 81st Annual Academy Awards
I loved the musical numbers with Hugh. He's so talented and I thought there should have been more of him and less of the boring clips. Hated the nominated song numbers, John Legend the most. Queen Latifah was awesome as usual. Too many montage things and the multiple winner/presenters was lame. Overall, I felt it was one of the better Oscar shows in the last 5 years, even though it was kind of tame and predictable, and it didn't seem to drag as much. Usually fast forwarding isn't fast enough to get through all the dreck.
oh yeah and I forgot the making fun of Joaquin Phoenix!

I thought Legend actually butchered the song. Was Peter Gabriel busy? I loved that song at the end of Wall-E, shame it was treated that way, and mashed up with the two Slumdog songs.
And i still don't know how springsteen wasn't nominated. It freakin' WON the golden globe, and it can't get nominated for an Oscar?
I also didn't like the past winners talking about the nominees. Very forced and stilted. And the nominees did not get equal time, some in an extremely obvious way. I've always like how in the past, last year's male winner presents the female award for the current year.
I thought Jackman was actually pretty good. The "musical number on a budget" was actually pretty decent, except for the part about the reader. Jackman can dance!
I did like Hugh's joke about range. How he's australian, playing an australian, in a movie called "Australia".
