The Unit -- "In Hell Part 1" -- 11/9/08

2-part episode. Sounds like a doozy!!

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

Part 1 of 2. Jonas' daughter, Betsy, is kidnapped in Iraq, and Jonas and the team go in to rescue her. When they arrive, they learn she has been taken into Syria and that crossing the border is forbidden by the U.S. military because to do so is an act of war. Col. Ryan joins the mission and Mack plots his revenge against him for having an affair with Tiffy.

Whew, boy, anyon watch it live? NFL pushed it about 30 minutes over.

*waits for "stupid DVR missed last 30 minutes!" posts*

Good episode. Part two next week so we won't have to wait too long.

I was expecting Ryan's wife to be in the background with the terrorists.

This season has been great so far.

When this gets delayed, do the Nielsens take that into account or do they count by time period?

Solid episode tonight.

I would say this was up to par with the season premiere in awesomeness.

Lots of action and an intense storyline surrounding the team and Ryan.

Loved it when Jonas went all Rambo with the machine gun and shot up the track.

Ryan's plan to fake the heart attack and have the isotopes injected into his bloodstream was ingeneous.

Tiffy did deserve the bitch slap from Molly. Agree 100% with Molly and Kim that passing along that information could jeapordize the mission.

Looking forward to Part II.

So will Ryan go out a martyr? Die saving Betsy, rather than at Mac's hand?

Loved it when Mac asked Jonas: "What if it were your wife?" "Then he'd already be dead."

Great episode, flew by, so bring on Part II.

Yea, I hope the time delays from football don't kill the show. This show is really taking it on the chin with a Sunday night time slot and then all the time problems with football.

I disagree. How does telling Ryan jeopardize the mission? It's not like the mission depended on Ryan -- he invited himself and was there for support. Now, releasing a useless videotape (yeah Molly, these terrorists are really going to release your daughter because you made some stupid videotape) that exposes her real identity in her current covert operation -- now that jeopardizes a mission.

There's something about the Molly character that just rubs me the wrong way. She's always so indignant and self-righteous and her problems always seem to outweigh those of others. I find her very irritating. In fact, I find all the wives irritating. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- they should all go.

BTW, anybody know if Robert Patrick is leaving the show? I hope not; he adds a lot to the show IMO.

Interesting storyline about their incursion into Syria given current events (Bush now allowing incursions into Syria and Pakistan). Also, famed reporter Bob Woodward revealed recently how the US is using these "fusion cells" composed of special forces and intelligence officers to very great effect in Iraq. In fact, he credits these cells with having captured or killed hundreds of suspected terrorists and their supporters; basically, they're responsible for having effectively "decapitated" Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Some say these cells are the real reason that US fortunes have turned dramatically in Iraq, not the so-called "surge" as the Bush administration would have you believe. Reading all this you have to wonder whether Mamet based this series on one of these cells.

Yeah, I didn't think it was right for Molly to slap Tiffy like that.

I hope the show stays too.

According to the quick report from Pifeeback about last night:
the first half of The Unit at a third-place 9.43 million viewers and a 2.5/ 6 in the demo at 10:30 p.m.
And this is the quote on last Sun
The Unit (Viewers: #3, 8.97 million; A18-49: #3, 2.3/ 6) from 9-11 p.m., which is not matching levels of former occupant Shark.
Just to give an idea of the show's ratings. I think these numbers still are pretty good but maybe not good enough for CBS.

btw, what gun did Jonas use on that truck?

It'd be a bigger surprise if they kill off Mac instead with only Ryan around, thus leaving the question of "Did Ryan kill Mac or let him die or could nothing be done?". That would make an even bigger mess for the characters to deal with. Remember they've done it before, leading us to think one character goes, but then killing another.

I really like this show. I want to see it stick around. I doubt it's going to happen. If CBS does kill it, it's not going to be because of football. CBS has been doing things this way for years and understands what football does to ratings. It's going to be because the show is underperforming the show they canned last season.

I imagine it will stay until the end of the year. It may even get one more year. I'd say that's the absolute ceiling, though.

Granted the ratings aren't the same when it was at 10pm on Tuesday's after NCIS, but you have to consider that Cold Case is a much weaker lead-in compared to NCIS. If this was still on Tuesday's at 10pm instead of The Mentalist I can guarantee the ratings would be between 10-15M viewers a week.

I've read that it's maintained 70-80% of Cold Case's audience, which is very good IMO. Roughly 9.5M viewers a week on a Sunday night is pretty damn good.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I noticed that The Unit and Shark (which had this timeslot last season) are both produced by FOX. I think CBS probaby chose to renew The Unit instead of Shark after last season because it has a cheaper production budget.

Interesting...or maybe Mac sacrifices himself for the daughter at some point. Then when they get back, Molly has to deal with her blaming Tiffy for "endangering the mission" but her husband didn't come home on a mission to save Molly's daughter.

I didn't know that it was a 2 parter. With 5 mins left I thought they would wrap it up too quickly.

I really don't like the wives story right now. I have gone back and forth since the beginning of the show on the wives. One week I like their story and the next week I want to slap them. And the 3 of them go togther, I don't like or dislike one more than the others.

Fantastic episode. This show has really done a pretty good job of turning around from a subpar season last year. Jonas firing on that truck all Scarface-style was badass.

What happened to Hector? I sat out season three so I'm guessing something happened to him then? I used to enjoy the dynamic between him and Grey.

Rent Season 3. It's a very solid season despite being only 11 episodes.

You missed out on what was one of the best episodes of the series.
