Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update Thursday (10/16/08)

Gonna get a debate sketch... I can feel it.

And after listening to Obama last night, Armisen does sound like him.

Did they actually fake the sound dropping out to add to the authenticity?

The Joe the Plumber stuff was just great.

I really enjoy Weekend Update, though I don't know why it isn't as funny as when The Daily Show does the news. Same format, but the energy just isn't as strong. Still, it's my favorite SNL bit.

I don't know why, but I really liked the crazy McCain lady. I think I would want to vote for Obama more if he promised to turn the White House into a Pyramid.

Armisen needs to add some more 'uhs' to make it more perfect.

other than making fun of the way Obama says Uhhh and Look, did they make fun of him at all?

rather than being political, why not try being funny and making fun of both candidates?

the mccain stuff in the debate was funny until it turned into joe the plumber being 3 1/2" tall, invisible, and living under mccains bed in a cigar box. wtf was that? it sure wasnt funny.

The debate wasn't funny at all. Weekend Update wasn't bad.

Not as good as last week.

Hammond's Jesse Jackson is getting tired.

The line about turning the white house into a pyramid had me rolling.

Man! Chris Parnell is gettin' another chance by Lorne Michaels.

I wonder if Lorne regrets firing him during the lay-offs.

Speaking of Letterman, I missed it last night. Did Senator McCain show up? Did Dave go easy on him?

I saw some of it. It wasn't an O'Reilly-style grilling, but Letterman asked some good questions, and McCain gave reasonable answers.

McCain, the doddering old fool is easy fodder... but how the hell do you make fun of Obama? Take shots at his cool, calm demeanor and perfect diction and oratory skills? yeah, comic gold to be had there..

his policies

there could have been jokes about acorn or relationship ayers

that he thinks he can dance but cant

perfect dictation and oratory skills? they tried to make fun of that by saying uhhh a few times but not nearly as much as even obama says it.

I dread skits that parody the actual debates. Why not do a skit that takes place right before the debate or right after? You can certainly use what was actually said as fodder for the skit. It's always the same old stuff.

And McCain being batshit crazy in that skit was very unfunny to me, and I'm not even voting for him. It just seemed to come out of nowhere.

I do agree its tough to make fun of Obama. I like him, but he has such an even persona for the most part that there's not much you can do with him.

Is it not cool in comedy circles to work for SNL? Why can't they attract the caliber of writers that Conan, Daily Show, and Colbert have? Maybe because the performers do a lot of the writing. Who knows, but if they aren't going to cancel the show I wish they's step it up a bit. Yet I continue to watch week after week, so what the fuck do I know.

That's a good question. It's usually the sharp, witty Harvard grads like Conan O'Brien who get hired by SNL. At least, that's how it was in the old days.

Indeed. Even last season when the show was 100% about pimping Clinton's campaign they never really lampooned him.

For one thing, SNL has a tendency to sometimes waste talent - instead giving the spotlight to a handful of performers while ignoring others. For instance, Rob Riggle was an SNL cast member during the 2004-2005 season, but they completely wasted him and seldom gave him the spotlight. He then moved over to The Daily Show where he's been nothing short of awesome.

Also, I think the "Live" format needs to be abandoned for most of the show. That the "Digital Shorts" have been generally the strongest parts of the show over the past few seasons seems to back up my view. Be live for the intro and the host opening, but making more of the rest of the show pre-taped would improve things a lot IMO.

And maybe it's time to go to a 60-minute format because the 90-minute format is long out of date (for instance, The Tonight Show abandoned it way back in the early-'80s) and a shorter running time would help to improve the quality of skits.

I was not impressed with the debate skit but I thought that the crazy McCain lady was hilarious on WU.
