Is the Big Bang Theory any good ?

Im maybe looking at this show as an offseason catchup show

Is it any good ?

Gunde 10-14-08 06:15 AM

IMO only if you like traditional sitcoms with little intelligence.

Compared to Arrested Development, 30 Rock and The Office: Absolutely not
Compared to How I Met Your Mother, Two And A Half Men, Till Death: Sure, it's ok.

marty888 10-14-08 06:31 AM

Yes.

Quake1028 10-14-08 06:48 AM

I think it's the funniest show on TV right now, and that's coming from someone who LOVES Office and Scrubs.

GradVT06 10-14-08 07:40 AM

Absolutely.

Patman 10-14-08 07:50 AM

F-yeah!

rfduncan 10-14-08 07:59 AM

:boring:

It is just about as "standard" a sitcom as you can get (it IS Chuck Lorre after all), and in that regard, I'm not sure what you expect you need to "catch up" on. You could start watching new episodes tomorrow and be up to speed by the end of that first one.

I post this knowing that mostly fans of the show will be the only ones to jump in here and encourage you to watch it. As someone who has found there are plenty of other more interesting options available on regular TV right now, you can safely skip it, and your life will continue the same as if you watched it.

Goat3001 10-14-08 08:02 AM

It's nothing special. It's funny but its not incredibly involved. It's definitely worth watching if you have the time but don't expect to be blown away. Oh and to top it off, Kaley Cuoco has an awesome rack.

Charlie Goose 10-14-08 08:09 AM

I enjoy it a lot, but it's a regular sitcom. Some good laughs and broadly obvious jokes. It's not reinventing the genre.

Double_Oh_7 10-14-08 08:36 AM

It's the only show I look forward to watching each week. I think you'll like it.

Tracer Bullet 10-14-08 08:53 AM

It's funny, but don't cancel your heart valve surgery for it.

Original Desmond 10-14-08 10:55 AM

i like most of the decent regular sitcoms so i guess i'll give it a shot

fumanstan 10-14-08 10:59 AM

I think it's great, but only if you like or are familiar with basic "nerd" stuff like comic book heroes, video games, science etc. It makes it fun to know what they're talking about. One of the only shows I catch regularly.

Walker Boh 10-14-08 03:41 PM

I find it painfully unfunny, but a lot of people really enjoy it. I couldn't believe it lasted for more than a single episode, but then again I thought that about "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and it won an Emmy, so what do I know?

Quake1028 10-14-08 08:03 PM

Did you give it more than the pilot? Most pilots are woefully different from where the show ends up when it hits it's stride. I'm a huge fan, but even I can admit this show has gotten leaps and bounds better since the first few eps.

My thoughts exactly.

It hits a little closer to home for me, since I work in an academic setting as a Masters engineer surrounded by Physics doctors.

The introduction scene last week (yesterday) was hilarious, and was something I have experienced.

are you referring to the "Doctor,Doctor, Doctor,.....Mr." line

its a great show. My wife and I have honestly watched the S1 dvds every night since i picked it up and that was the day it was released.
If you are starting with season 2 watch "The Barbarian Sublimation" that has been the best episode of this season so far.
And it does help if you into the geekier hobbies like sci-fi and comics. I always found it funny that I own a few shirts that Sheldon wears constantly.

JuryDuty 10-14-08 10:44 PM

I just watched a couple episodes for the first time, but as someone who loves Arrested Development, The Office and Samantha Who?, I found it VERY hard to get past the laugh track and one-liners. I agree with others that if you like shows like Two and a Half Men, this is much of the same. Though I really like the Geek-angle and "inside" jokes. Still, I think it could have been more "intelligent."

bigjim25 10-14-08 10:56 PM

Kaley  Also, Sara Gilbert is now a regular which made it even better for me to watch.

Yes I was.

I think it could as well, however, for the 3 people that feel this way, there are probably 7 that think the opposite, and wouldn't watch.

I think they are treading a fine line between becoming too technical and scaring J6P away (if he ever watched).

I don't like it at all. It feels extremely forced which just makes the entire thing hard to watch, though it isn't as bad or broad as Two and a Half Men.

For reference sake, I enjoy How I Met Your Mother, The Office, 30 Rock, and of course AD.

Yes ... a good friend loves the show, so I gave it one more chance. I was surprised I didn't like it, because I go for the nerd humor.

I guess it's just not my style of sitcom. I love NBC's Thursday night (The Office, My Name is Earl, 30 Rock), Arrested Development, Always Sunny in Philly, lot of Britcoms, etc. I find Two-and-a-Half Men funny enough, though I don't watch it regularly. But there are a few shows that I just don't get (as far as the humor) ... Big Bang Theory, Christine, Reba are the ones that come immediately to mind. They just fall flat with me ... it feels like they're trying too hard or something.

This just shows how it is a matter of taste. I agree Reba is unwatchable, and ranks up there with House of Payne as terrible sitcoms go.

But BBT I find is one of the best shows on right now.

IMO no
