Dexter -- "The Lions Sleeps Tonight" -- 10/12/08

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

Dexter has a run-in with a pedophile; Freebo is accused of a murder he didn't commit, and Dexter knows the truth but can't say anything about it. Also, Dexter's friendship with Miguel begins to weigh on his mind.

They are laying down a lot of ground work still, and I'm eating it up, but I have a couple of issues. Dexter seems a bit to nonchalant about finding the skin patch slayer. He still doesn't know what the kid brother was doing at Freebo's and I doubt the other murders are unrelated. I would think he would want to get out in front of whatever is going down.

I'm still trying to get a handle on DA Prado. I just have no idea where they are going with him. I suspect his brother is more tied up in the Freebo thing than we know, or maybe it's the whole family.

I'm starting to dislike the CI character. They seem to be setting up a Cop/CI romance with Deb, just like her dad, but I'm not buying it. It seemed really forced when Batista's like "You have to make nice with the CI, he knows the streets." What is this guy, Huggy Bear? The actors have chemistry, but considering Deb's trust issues with men and how shady this guy is I'm not buying it yet.

Great episode. I have to agree with the CI it did seem a tab forced.

As for Dex not being interested in the skin patch slayer, it isn't really a matter of him not being into it, but more his life (and the character as a whole) has changed a lot in the last two seasons. That is obvious, but also there is no urgency for him to catch the guy yet. When the CI turns up dead and Deb starts to freak out, that is when he will get interested.

Lastly, Deb had the line of the night, with the comment about the kid...which sadly I can't remember all of it other than, "chubby cheeked shit machine".

I thought Deb would surely know enough Spanish to understand some of the song's lyrics to know that CI was mocling her. Jennifer Carpenter has this funny way of delivering cuss-laden dialogue, she would have fit in well on "Deadwood".

Miguel seems to need a lot of hand-holding, but I don't know it's a character quirk or if he has other plans to bring Dex into the fold of justice enforcement that operates outside the law, even if his day job as DA prevents him from being as aggressive as he'd like to be, but recognizes Dex's talents and sense of morality.

Not too crazy about the baby subplot.

At the very least, someone who lived in Miami all their life and is a cop would have known what the word "puta" means.

I've got to give this season credit: I have no idea where a lot of its plotlines are going to lead. Prado finding out this early about Dexter killing somebody really surprised me (I was assuming it was going to echo Lundy's arc last year), and Dexter pulling away from "the Code" (this week intentionally killing somebody who, while a bad guy, was not a killer) really has me excited to see where it all leads.

Same here, maybe she will have a miscarriage. This show does not need to turn into "A Serial Killer and a Baby".

Baby's always tend to sink shows...

This seasons episodes seem much shorter than seasons 1&2. I can't ever remember an eppy being only 50 mins long before this season, but the last 2 have been. What gives with that? that said the show is still great. I'm interested to see how the Prado link plays out.

Love that this has gone a different route than the books. Great season so far, IMO.

I'm going to guess that Prado's other brother, the sheriff, is somehow involved in the killings.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but I have a feeling that Prado is going to be calling up Dexter in the next few episodes to "handle" another person. I also think giving the shirt to Dex will come back to haunt him like the blood samples the black dude found in S2.

Same here. Also with massive trust issues and the story arc for Season 1 I wouldn't be surprised if...

Spoiler:
Anton ended up being the Skinning Serial Killer or somehow related to him (or her)

I'm still figuring out what Miguel's bother (the sheriff) role will be eventually. It seems that when he does show up in the episodes it's spotty and he's always yelling at someone

I also agree with those who don't like the baby storyline. I never liked Rita, so that doesn't help either.

i still do not quite know where this season is heading, but i am enjoying the ride. i cannot decide if
Spoiler:
ramon or anton is the skinning killer. anton has links to both. it would be a bit of a stretch for deb to, again, be romantically linked with another serial killer. OTOH, ramon has been seeking out freebo and may be willing to torture someone to get the information.

IMHO that would be very lazy writing for this series and possibly put it into "jump the shark" territory...

which part?

Spoiler:
i agree that deb getting involved with yet another serial killer would be in the territory of "jumping the shark". however, if ramon is involved and torturing people to get information regarding freebo, i think this would add an interesting angle to the show. serial killers are definitely covered by the code. would dexter be able to kill another of prado's brothers - especially now that they are "friends"? previous "friends" of dexter do not fare very well in the long run.
