Life on Mars -- Series Premiere -- "Out Here in the Fields" -- 10/9/08

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

In the series opener, NYPD detective Sam Tyler (Jason O'Mara) is hit by a car in 2008 and wakes up in 1973. There, he works with politically incorrect boss Gene Hunt (Harvey Keitel) and tough detective Ray Carling (Michael Imperioli) to help find a killer whose case is similar to one he was working on in 2008, all the while trying to figure out how to get home to 2008. Loosely based on the British drama of the same name. Annie Norris: Gretchen Mol.

? I thought the pilot was a scene for scene remake of the BBC version?!

I caught an episode of the British version and it was quite bizarre. The main character had become Prime Minister of Britain and was keeping a tiny old man inside a cage for some reason.

Loved the BBC version, so we'll see how this one goes. I think the big names in the cast will draw some viewers, but beyond that I guess the story has to be there. My understanding is that they'll go in a slightly different direction than the original.

Looking forward to it, with the original one to comfort me if this one lets me down.

Loved the retro promos ABC produced for this. Cheesy graphics and an Ernie Anderson impersonator -- good stuff.

Interesting little video on everything you need to know about the series.

I don't know .. the idea of remaking a British show seems pretty questionable to me. I'll be sticking with NBC tonight.

I'm really looking forward to this one also. That Jason O'Mara reminds me a great deal of a young(er) Mel Gibson. On paper, this show also has one of the best casts on television. Harvey Keitel? Gretchen Mol? Freakin' Michael "Christopher Moltisanti" Imperioli as a wisecracking 1970's badass detective with a porn stache!?

I hope this one is a winner!

Questionable indeed!

The success rate looks pretty low.

Ironic considering "The Office" is on NBC tonight.

Unless my sarcasm meter is broken.

I was sad to see Colm Meaney get axed in the reshoot, but who better than Keitel?

It is.

Kath & Kim is also a remake -- of an Australian show, though, not a British one.

I liked it a lot. But then I'm a total sucker for time travel.

I never saw the British show and didn't even know it existed.

Pretty much a spot on remake of the British pilot, with a few changes. I will stick around for more...I just fear that as the series progresses they will use more "flashforwards" as fillers to make up for having to fill in more episodes than the British series lasted (because, let's face it, the British series was just the right number of episodes. There's only so far you can take this concept.) I think the flash forwards will bog the series down...that is if they go in that direction. I think they will because they make a pretty big deal out of Lisa Bonet playing Sam's 2008 girlfriend for them to just have her in the pilot and a few flashes in a dream before he wakes back up in 1973.

I really liked it

1) a sci/fi fantasy show where the sci/fi elements is in the background, not overburdening it
2) a detective drama removed from the 'lets take a dna sample off the mirror that reflected the killers image' convention of todays cop shows
3) a show set in the city and year that I was born!
4) great cast
