That still plays into the gay metaphor. You might have a gay friend who seems "normal," but if you go into a gay bar or gay hangout, then everyone's going to be flaming and campy and being way over the top.

(Don't mean to come off as insulting to gay people here, and I probably could pick my words more judiciously, but I only have about two minutes before the board sets all of my posts to "read.")

The second episode was far better than the first episode for sure... But that's not saying much. After Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome, and Deadwood, the best HBO can give us is John From Cincinnati and True Blood? Showtime really has a good chance to steal the thunder right now...

Anyway I find this show to be really odd, even by the standards of vampire based entertainment. The writing/dialogue is terrible, and that's no dig at Alan Ball... It just really sucks. The acting is beyond words, and I'll simply leave it at that. The characters are rather flimsy, and their personalities are way overdone. Were the books like this? Again, I am in it for the long haul as long as Anna Paquin's body is the main attraction, but that won't stop me from complaining week in and week out.

I love the books, but the show so far has been somewhat disappointing to me. I realize that they have to condense or completely leave out certain things in order to do the show and fit it into the time slot... however I do think AP was a poor choice for Sookie. I don't find her attractive in the least. I will say I am anxious to see when Alcide comes into the series, and I will keep watching in hopes that it will grow on me.

I loved it just as much if not more than the pilot. People should stop trying to compare this to Buffy and the like. The majority of those episodes contain story, fight, (some) conclusion in each episode. This show isn't Buffy and isn't aspiring to be Buffy.

I thought it was great. Very slow-boiling and enjoyable. Love the cliffhangers that keep me wanting more. And Tara and her accent weren't near as annoying as in the pilot.

I hope Chris Bauer has more scenes soon, though. He's awesome.

Already renewed for a new season:

HBO RENEWS TRUE BLOOD, NEW SERIES FROM "SIX FEET UNDER" CREATOR ALAN BALL, FOR SECOND SEASON, WITH PRODUCTION TO BEGIN EARLY NEXT YEAR

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 17, 2008 HBO has renewed the new drama series TRUE BLOOD for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, Programming Group and West Coast Operations. Created by Alan Ball, the series will begin production of new episodes early next year in Los Angeles, with debut set for summer 2009.

"We are absolutely thrilled that the critics and our viewers have embraced TRUE BLOOD," noted Lombardo. "Alan Ball has done it again made an addictive series that is unlike any other."

"I am thrilled to be able to continue to work with such a talented group of writers, cast and crew to explore the characters and world created by Charlaine Harris in her novels," Ball said. "It really is a joy to go to work every day and I couldn't be happier to be back home at HBO."

The Sept. 7 debut episode is proving to be a hit with HBO audiences, attracting more than four million viewers to date, while the debut of the second episode on Sept. 14 posted an unprecedented 24% gain in viewers over the first week's debut.

Critics across the country in Detroit, Baltimore, Denver and Orlando have proclaimed TRUE BLOOD one of the best new shows on TV. USA Today called it "wildly imaginative," with "one of the best ensembles of the new series," while the Washington Post found it "audacious, outrageous and playfully grisly." TV Guide hailed the show as "graphically sexy and scary, and often wildly funny," and "a broadly entertaining, deliciously twisted slice of modern Southern Gothic."

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, TRUE BLOOD takes place in the not-too-distant future, when vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans for their fix. Set in a backwoods Louisiana town, the show follows the romance between waitress Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin), who can read minds, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (played by Stephen Moyer). Alan Ball (creator of the Emmy-winning HBO series "Six Feet Under") created and executive produced the show, as well as wrote and directed episodes of the series, which is based on the popular Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

The cast also includes Ryan Kwanten as Sookie's brother Jason, Rutina Wesley as her best friend Tara Thornton, Sam Trammell as Sookie's good-hearted boss Sam Merlotte and Nelsan Ellis as Lafayette Reynolds, a cook at Merlotte's

Season one credits: TRUE BLOOD is created by and executive produced by Alan Ball; based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris; co-executive producer, Brian Buckner; supervising producer, Nancy Oliver; produced by Carol Dunn Trussell; producer, Alexander Woo; co-producer, Raelle Tucker.

Season one directors: Alan Ball, John Dahl, Nick Gomez, Anthony M. Hemingway, Michael Lehmann, Daniel Minahan, Nancy Oliver, Marcos Siego, Scott Winant. Season one writers: Alan Ball, Brian Buckner, Chris Offutt, Nancy Oliver, Raelle Tucker, Alexander Woo.

Didn't expect to hear this so soon. Great news -- curious to know if season 2 will parallel book 2.

I hope at the very least they parallel the second and third together. I don't think the second book on its own will make a strong season.

Personally I would like it if after the first season they start doing their own thing. I love the series, but nothing EVERYTHING that is going to happens takes away a little bit.

Looks like they are getting off on a good start. I was surprised at how violent that beat down was at the beginning. The only thing that got to me was the ending like others have stated. Didn't see the need to go all vampy.

You know, one has to love the modern Hollywood Vampires.

Either they're handsome brooding long haired pretty boys who've loved and lost, and have potentially found love again, but they can't commit due to baggage... Uber Hip Club kids who just want to dance all night and drink blood Fuck and do drugs...or perverted hyper sexual low life scum who only live for the next seduction and kill.

It's the Buffy effect.

In Buffy, when you had a vampire played by a handsome actor, he was a creature of the night with the heart of a poet, and a deep sense of longing created by his immortality and loss of those he loved over the centuries.

All of the other vampires were these yellow-eyed feral beasts that looked like Klingons and could barely speak and had to be killed immediately.

You slay the ugly ones and lay the good-looking ones.
