Kitchen Nightmares--"Handlebar"---9/11/08

Now the real show begins, but when the hell is Gordon going to visit a restaurant outside of New York/New Jersey?

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

Chef Ramsay visits the Handlebar Restaurant & Lounge in Mount Sinai, N.Y., where the owners seem oblivious to the passé 1980s decor and their head chef's apathy.

Bluelitespecial 09-11-08 10:23 PM

I can't believe they recognized Dee Synder in the restaurant, but not Mic Foley.

DJariya 09-11-08 11:21 PM

FOX signed up Ramsay for 2 more seasons of Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares along with a 3rd show.

I watched just the intro and decided to watch something else. I hate so much all of the bullshit antics this show resorts to in order to create "tension" and "anger." Especially after having just watched a BBC rerun. This show has such a good idea behind it, if only they didn't have some cock of a producer deciding to manufacture everything with such phony editing techniques and over the top, sting-crazy music.

Seriously. I thought that was him. Wtf?

I thought this was actually a good episode. Billy is one no-brained motherfucker, but I liked the people they had there. Maybe that's because I have family on LI and some of them reminded me of my relatives. The editing wasn't as bad as it usually is. I was surprised that Gordon actually liked something that came out during his initial visit. Usually he calls everything crap when he tastes the menu for the 1st time.

Yeah, I was suprised he like the soup. I thought they would mention that again because I was pretty sure watching the cook work (heating up frozen microwave meals) that it would turn out to be canned soup.

Was it just me or did Billy go from hating Ramsey to being ready to following him come hell or high water over.. a commercial break?

I was shocked he didn't get a mention either. He walks in and I thought he would get his own mention, but he was just sitting at the table later as one of Synder's "friends".

In one clip he wanted to sell the restaurant he hated ramsey so much, in the next clip he was in love with Ramsey. This show would be good if it weren't the same pattern EVERY episode

- Everyone hates Ramsey
- crappy dinner service
- There's a big argument
- It seems hopeless
- The restaurant makeover (thanks johnnyqust)
- They love Ramsey
- great dinner service

I'd like to see something different for a change.

jonnyquest 09-12-08 03:22 PM

^^^Don't forget the "restaurant makeover" that always happens.

You forgot how the final dinner service always begins poorly and looks like everything will fall apart until the Ramsey pep talk.

It's these patterns that works for many reality shows. Wife Swap and Supernanny have their own patterns. The networks think 'if it ain't broke..."

DJariya 09-13-08 05:08 AM

I actually have to agree with Finkpish here. This show is turning into a fucking joke. The editing is so fucking deceptive and everything is so carefully plotted out like a scripted show. I can predict every move from start to finish. Everything about this show feels fake. The only thing that keeps me from abandoning it is Gordon himself and the kitchen inspections. The BBC version is far and away superior to this. I think I am much more entertained by Gordon screaming and calling people names on Hell's Kitchen than this.

2 things I hate about this show the most are 1) The Open which gives away the entire season 2) The teases which give away the next segment.

islandclaws 09-13-08 02:03 PM

^ Seriously, what's up with those teases? I'm already watching the show, do you really need to keep enticing me every 15 minutes to keep watching it? If anything they make me want to change the channel.

I wish they would incorporate a Gordon narration like in the BBC version too. And I agree, HK is much more entertaining .

It always gets me how these restaurant owners get on the show because they need his help, then pout and whine when Gordon tells them how to be successful. Yeesh.

big whoppa 09-13-08 04:19 PM

I'm kind of tired how everyone fawns all over Gordon. We know he's the greatest chef in the universe. OK. Move on. And golly jee, he's hot too.

Norm de Plume 09-14-08 04:40 PM

Nice shirt Ramsay keeps wearing, that looks shat on.

Joel Robuchon is better.:)

Wazootyman 09-14-08 09:43 PM

Was that for certain Foley? I thought that when he walked in, but after getting absolutely no mention, it just seemed odd. I even tried looking at his teeth for confirmation

jeffkjoe 09-14-08 10:58 PM

I've only seen one restaurant that didn't have a happy ending - Sebastian's in Hollywood - from last season. You know, the one where the menu had 21 different dinner combinations.

Not true, there was another restaurant in Southern California (Lela's) that shut down shortly after the Kitchen Nightmares crew left. It was mentioned at the end of the episode.

The owner of Sebastians was just a stubborn dick. So, I don't see that as an unhappy ending.

McHawkson 09-15-08 10:28 AM

I think there was at least 2 restaurants were shut down after Gordon finished with them on BBC version - one with veggie restaurant (the owner gave up few weeks later) and other restaurant was bought out by someone.

CPA-ESQ. 09-15-08 12:12 PM

That woman was obviously TRASHED! you could see an empty martini glass next to her when she is sitting at the bar with Ramsey.

I think that the restaurant had a large group of people that would come in and hang at the bar... so the only thing that needed to be updated / fixed was the menu & restaurant.

To his credit, he really turned the veggie place around, but the lady that ran the place didn't like the concept of working.

Well, the owner went back to his old ways and didn't listen to Gordon.

To me, that's the definition of failure. Unhappy ending. End of story.
