At least it was only 2 hours and not the usual 3.

The last time the VMA's had anything worth watching was in 1999 when Kid Rock performed with Aerosmith and the legendary Run DMC. And the other in 2000 (I think that was it) when Durst jumped on stage with Christina Aguleria...that one was cool because it was totally unexpected. Although now it seems silly.
GNR doesn't make my list because I knew about it weeks in advance, like every single other person on the planet. Worst kept secret ever.

Host Russell Brand was forced to apologise for poking fun at the Jonas Brothers' morals during Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards - after a public dressing down from singer Jordin Sparks.
The British comedian and Forgetting Sarah Marshall star mocked the pop sensations mercilessly for more than half the show for their no-sex-before-marriage promise and the purity rings they wear.
At one point, he even pretended he'd stolen a Jonas brothers' virginity as he held a ring in his hand.
Sparks, who is among the teen stars putting purity before sex, admonished Brand for his remarks, stating, "It's not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut."
Minutes later, a crestfallen Brand apologised, saying, "I've gotta say sorry because I said those things about promise rings; that was bad of me. I didn't mean to take it lightly."
Brand added, "I love Jonas Brothers, I think it's (purity) really good. I don't want to piss off teenage fans... Promise rings, I'm well up for it, well done everyone."
But he couldn't resist a final jab, adding, "It's just, a bit of sex occasionally never hurt anybody."
Way to puss out Brand. Also what the fuck were Slipknot doing there presenting best rap video?

You must have missed last year. This WAS bad in a whole different way (the studio audience feel was bullshit, the 'staged/theatrical/music video-esque' performances were horrendous) but leaps and bounds better than that orgy of ADD that was last year's mess...hotel rooms with partial songs etc.... Bad but not nearly as horrendous as last years... hey MTV, why fuck with a good thing... go back to Radio City, get Chris Rock or Jon Stewart to host, do what you used to do - people will like it... oh yeah, and start showing some fucking music videos on your channel and nominate stuff that's actually got artistic merit, not just the shit that teeny boppers are loving (seriously, Video of the Year was the worst nominees list in YEARS).

Brand works best when he is being akward, his standup bit didn't work for me.

I can see them going back to New York soon. But they will never, ever, ever, have any videos win on artistic merits any more. There are plenty of "popular" acts (like the aforementioned Fall Out Boy) who make great videos that have artistic value. But that is a small (if not single digit) percentage.

You are spot on. My brother wanted me to see Gym Class Heroes (he has played with them numerous times and is friends with all the guys in the band) with Fall Out Boy, but other than that, what a god damn mess. Whoever thought it was a good idea to run the show that way should have been fired.

Yeah, if you're going to be that blatantly partisan you had better be damn funny. That segment lacked subtlety and originality and ended up being painful to watch. While I'm sure the audience was heavily left-leaning, even they seemed uncomfortable during that set.

In fact a better example might be, Jay-Z's "99 Problems". He is popular and that video is incredibly well done.

Even as a fan of Fall Out Boy, that song and video was pretty crappy. I'd assume it's because MTV is pushing Pete Wentz (although his show isn't terrible).

Wait... Slipknot was there and they didn't kill and eat the Jonas Brothers?

No, I doubt you're old. Probably just have good taste. I read a lot of music magazines and websites so that's the only reason I know who most are. Couldn't tell you what they sing. But I'm still reeling from that lead singer of Tokio Hotel. You know, Bjork's son/daughter.
