Penn & Teller: Stranger Danger - 08/07/08

Showtime, 9:00pm CDT

Child abduction, Amber Alert, not to mention dirty water, filthy air, toxic toys, it's a wonder that anyone makes it out of childhood alive. Penn & Teller feel the world has never been a safer place, but they argue the parks are empty; kids don't ride their bikes to school; and more young people than ever are on anti-anxiety medication.
Should be good.

Next week: World Peace

In two weeks (season finale): Good Ol' Days

I'm really looking forward to this one. It's amazing how much things have changed from my parents to me to the current generation. There probably are a lot of teenagers out there who have never even skinned their knee. The worst some have probably experienced is a vicious cramp in one of their Xbox hands. It's just amazing to me the extent that some children are pampered and coddled. Granted, I understand that's not true across the board, but it troubles me that my 17-year-old niece and 13-year-old nephew don't know how to throw a Frisbee. Really? Now, I wasn't some rough and tumble boy growing up, but I played outside, and I could certainly throw a Frisbee.

Except for the NASA one, since I really wasn't sure how they would approach it, this is the one I've most anticipated this season.

These are the same kids who get decapitated by rollercoasters trying to retrieve a baseball cap, or get killed by sunbathing on train tracks, because they've never learned to differentiate real danger from the blown-out-of-proportion stuff.

I think it was one of their best shows. It struck the right balance, showing how the fears were way overblown without minimizing or ridiculing the facts that such things do happen and the statistics are no comfort for those to whom it has happened. The woman who had her child abducted and killed was amazing, being able to still put things in proper perspective after such a horrible, tragic loss. My heart just broke for her.

Good mythbusting too. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Mythbusters have previously taken on some of those myths.

One thing: why was this program at least a full five minutes shorter than most of their shows?

Couldn't find anymore things for that kid to do?

Funny episode, with good truth throughout. Was I the only one that could see the mustache on that NY Sun writer? Holy jeebus, get some wax lady@

That one lady was a laugh riot, even though she was supposedly backing up P&T's point. "In my upper class, affluent neighborhood, I let my kids play outside. I'm not sure what the problem is?!?" Yeah, no shit lady...I'm sure things are fine in your gated community, but you wouldn't even drive your kids through a shittier neighborhood, let alone let them play by themselves there.

That was my thought as well. An episode that just gets you to the next one.
