"The Middleman" on ABC Family - 06/16/08

Anyone planning on watching this new series? EW said it was a cross between The Avengers, The Tick, and Reaper. Looks like fun sci-fi.

The pilot was available as a free download from iTunes, but I haven't watched it yet. I'll probably just watch it tonight when it airs.

I didn't know what to make of the print ads I saw, it looked like a pretty silly show. But that EW article was enough to convince me to watch the pilot.

My friend Andy, who sings and plays guitar in our church worship band, is one of the lead writers on this show. His episode is coming up in a couple of weeks. I guess I should set a season pass up to support him!

The pilot was available in HD on x-box live last week. I thought it had already premiered. The episode was okay, kinda catchy. If it were a fall show, I wouldn't bother, but since summer fare is rather boring and non-existant I set it on tivo. I'll give it a few episodes, but I can see the season pass being easily deleted.

I'll give it a shot, but the promo gives off a 'Men In Black' vibe that worries me.

You have a real reason to be worried. However, the dialogue is witty and makes up for it. Part of it even felt a bit like Kevin Smith's writing, but I know he'd have nothing to do with it (that, and it's ABC - remember Clerks Animated Series?).

The tone's a bit patchy -- at times the actors seemed to be playing it straight, but the next scene they go into full-on camp mode. But I chalk that up to being a pilot. If they can get that ironed out, this'll be great.

With the first few minutes, I was ready to turn it off. It got a bit better. At this point, I'm only ready to give it the next episode rather than the season pass.

I don't know if I was just tired when I watched it, but I had a hard time paying attention to this show. I liked the set-up in the beginning, and I really liked the female lead character, but everytime they started showing the apes or the Italians, I would just zone out and realize I had no idea what was happening. I even had to run it back a couple of times because the plot kind of lost me.

I will give it another chance because I did see some promise with the premise and the characters. I just am going to need to see more interesting plots every week to stay watching.

Fun. It'll be interesting to see if they can either escape the alien-of-the-week trap ... or make it interesting. But it definitely rates more viewings.

i LOVED it...really smart and fun. You definitely have to be on your game when your watching it though cause its so fast moving and they make a ton of subtle pop culture reference.. Also after the apes, i'm definitely interested to see what kind of creature/monster they'll be dealing with in the next episode...

I like it better than the Sarah Jane Adventures, which is basically what it is.

The Middle Man writer

With Javier Grillo-Marxuach at the helm it has some potential

Sure, the female lead is very easy on the eyes, but I found it to be extremely painful to watch. The show seems too "meta-aware" and hip for its own good.

I get it - the writers love pop culture, the characters love pop culture. All the references to Blofeld, Flash (Barry Allen versus Wally West), mob movies, Gorilla Grodd, X-Men, John Wayne (with the milk), etc. got really tiresome.

I am surprised they don't stop the action and look straight in the camera to deliver a line. The actors have an almost 60's Batman delivery.

It needs some work, but I enjoyed it a bit and will continue to watch.

Good:
* The interplay/banter between the two leads
* The basic Middleman concept
* "Ri-gosh-darn-diculous"

Bad:
* Characters seem very one-dimensional
* A lot of the dialogue was trying too hard to be witty or clever and felt very overwritten

Ugly:
* Mafia cliches and monkey humor are bad enough separately, but together it was absolutely cringe-inducing

I'm hoping the future episodes don't have villains as awful as the mafia monkey, which shouldn't be too hard as that was probably one of the lamest things imaginable. But that dialogue was often just as bad... it seemed to combine the worst tendencies of Kevin Smith and Amy Sherman-Palladino (both of whom I admire about 90% of the time) into one.

I'll give the show another couple of episodes since it's basically trying to have fun and not take itself too seriously.

I just included this post to say that when the female lead was painting, I was half-expecting to see really bad stick figures like Janey Briggs in Not Another Teen Movie when they finally showed the picture.

I liked it alright. It seemed like the female lead was much more comfortable delivering the rapid fire dialog than the male lead.

last nights episode was another hilarious one! I don't know how the think of this stuff, so outrageous! Love the office woman's comments to Wendy, she's always got some great one-liners...

Wendy and the Middleman continue to have great on screen chemistry..does anyone else love his expressions? (eg "Guns of Navaro")
