BSG: Where'd the term "cylon" come from?

Was it mentioned in the original BSG series somewhere? (I don't recall it ever being explained on the current show) They're cybernetic organisms - how does that translate to "cylon"? Was it some kind of a trademark, like Xerox?

In the 1978 Galactica movie and series and the 1980 spin-off, the Cylons were created to serve the reptilian race of the Cylon Alliance.

I actually didn't know that until I looked it up. I wasn't much of a fan of the original show.

Yeah, in the pilot/movie for the original series, Apollo explains that the cylons were a race of lizard people. They created the robots in the series, but the robots became too intelligent, and killed their creators. He said they just continued to call the robots Cylons.

Wasn't the explanation slightly different in the 2-hour "movie" they released in theaters (complete with "Sensurround," oooh)?
