The Riches (Update: CANCELLED)

I checked out the first season and ended up really enjoying it. I love all the twists and deceit, and Eddie Izzard is one of my favorite comics. Anyone else a fan? Season 2 is coming back in less than a week next Tuesday.

matta 03-13-08 12:07 PM

I don't really get Izzard's comedy, but I like the show. It has some of the best acting around.

BDB 03-13-08 01:50 PM

Love Izzard, Love Driver.

Eddie's on Tour this summer with a new show, I have tickets for the dates in SF..

grem458 03-13-08 10:44 PM

I love Eddie. Hope to hit the tour in Dallas. Can't wait for the show to come back on, even in abbreviated form.

harrydoyle 03-14-08 10:36 AM

One of the cool things I read about Izzard is that John Cleese called him 'the lost Python.' I can think of few higher compliments! My favorite humor from Izzard is when he gets silly/morbid; check out this 'Flattened Pickle' clip, it's hilarious

Looking forward to the new season...the promos have been great.

Lost a little steam towards the end...but overall it was excellent. Looking forward to s2.

I've been thinking about preordering the first season. Never seen an ep. Encouraging to hear some good things about it.

harrydoyle 03-17-08 09:41 AM

If you like Eddie Izzard, Minnie Driver, or if you like dark/backwards humor in general I think you'll enjoy the show.

For example, the show is obviously about a family of con artists who literally steal for a living, so their morals aren't all there. At one point Izzard's character Wayne pulls a gun on someone who's on to the family's secret, and you wonder if he would go so far as to shoot him. This person eventually finds out it's a squirt gun with kool-aid in it.

That's kind of typical for the humor of the series: there's some pretty heavy drama, but it's all interspersed with really silly and amusing moments. Their lives are a total lie, and they have to go to ridiculous lengths to continue living the lie.

Or you can do what I'm doing - watching it all on Hulu. I'm hoping to be done with S1 before S2 starts!

Season 1 is $19.99 at Target this week.

Nice to see this one back

I do wish Comcast had FX in HD - because the picture quality was a little snarky.

macnorton 03-19-08 08:30 AM

Last night's was OK. Seems like they tried to pack a lot into that hour...but it was still good. Sad that this is going to get cut short due to the strike...

slop101 03-19-08 10:47 AM

The only reason I watch this is because I like the actors and their characters. The whole concept of grifters and the constant lying and dishonesty (which is already getting stale) really turns me off, and if the cast wasn't so talented, I wouldn't tune in again.

They definitely packed a lot into the show, but I like the developments that happened. I like that they're staying in town, and this situation with Dale should be interesting haha.

Even though the season will be 7 episodes long, I'm glad they were able to make some at all given the strike. I'm encouraging my friends to tune in this season so that there will be a third, full season next year. Hopefully you know people who watch the show too. :P

it looks like the actor who plays dale announced on his myspace page the riches has been canceled. now im pissed i wasted my time with this show.

mdc3000 10-07-08 07:50 AM

Fuck that noise. I really like this show (season 2 is only just finishing up on Canadian tv - so this blows extra hard). This show can't be that expensive to produce... I'm surprised FX wouldn't give it another shot... shit, Dirt got 2 full seasons.

marty888 10-07-08 08:50 AM

If true, I'm sorry to hear it's gone - Minnie Driver and Eddie Izzard were terrific on this!

spainlinx0 10-07-08 08:58 AM

Never got through the entire first season. Guess I don't need to bother now.

Gizmo 10-07-08 09:26 AM

Dirt and The Riches both had two seasons IIRC.

Actually Dirt and The Riches only got a 7 episode 2nd season because of the writer's strike. The strike actually hurt these shows as FX scheduled them in crappy timeslots to fill holes.

stingermck 10-07-08 03:41 PM

Oh well, caught season 1 on dvd, and 2 didnt hold my attention. Bring on Nip Tuck and Rescue Me.

IDrinkMolson 10-07-08 03:48 PM

I had a love/hate relationship with this show. Great acting, terrible story.
I'm kind of glad it's gone, won't have to agonize through it anymore, but the wife will miss it.

"At least Minnie Driver will have more time to spend with her baby boy.

A rep for FX confirmed Tuesday to EW.com that the network has pulled the plug on The Riches, the critically lauded yet extremely niche dark comedy that starred Driver and Eddie Izzard as grifters who assume the identity of a dead rich couple and along with their kids move right into the deceased's posh neighborhood.

The Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated series premiered in March 2007 and lasted for 20 episodes over the course of two seasons, the second having only seven installments thanks to the writers' strike.

FX's move doesn't exactly come as a surprise: A source told E! News yesterday that the cancellation was coming, and Todd Stashwick, who plays Dale, murderous nutball cousin to Driver's Dahlia Malloy, blogged last week about the show's impending demise.

"Word came down. That word is canceled," the actor wrote. "Thank you everyone, all the passionate folks who were rooting for our return. Alas it will not be."

rfduncan 10-08-08 12:52 PM

Well that kind of sucks. While the 2nd season did stall a little bit, it was still entertaining and got better by the end of the season. The "cliffhanger" as it was certainly left things in an interesting position, but I guess we'll never find out the fate of the Malloys. :(
