Mok 03-11-08 09:10 PM

I see Prince Archuletta fell off his throne.

Howiefan 03-11-08 09:16 PM

David A forgot the lyrics at least three times. I can't even remember seeing that happen in ANY of the past seasons.

Jadzia 03-11-08 09:18 PM

Syesha - I like her but she was pretty dull tonight

Chekezie - Wow, I loved this! I have not been much of a fan of his thus far, but this was my favorite performance of the night. I would have never expected that from him.

Ramiele - Snooze
Jason Castro - More Snooze

Carly Smithson - Loved the stage presence, but I was not a fan of this song for her vocals though. She sounded like she was channeling her roommate Amanda's gruffness too much

David Cook - Hey kids, remember the 90's? There was this really annoying singing style called post-grunge where you sing like you have marbles in your mouth.

Brooke Smith - She looks like she could be Paul McMartney's next wife - except this one can sing and she has all her limbs. I would love to hear her perform something from the "Grace of My Heart" soundtrack. She has that Kristen Vigard-Carole King vibe going on.

David Hernandez - He should have done Tiffany's version of that song. Or stripped. Is it wrong I keep wanting to call him "Dirty Sanchez"?

Amanda Overmyer - Ugh. I just hate the lazy way she sings, like she can barely look up at the audience

Michael Johns - I like him but he strains on the high notes

Kristy Lee Cook - After weeks of sounding like she is in a coma, she finally does an upbeat song. And it is complete crap.

David Archuleta - Boring. I have never gotten the hype on this guy.

DVDho78DTS 03-11-08 09:20 PM

Everyone gets a free pass this week thanks to Kristy Lee Cook.

B.A. 03-11-08 09:24 PM

We are up to Castro. Tonight's show sucks so far. Boring as hell. Chikezie wasn't, but I thought the judges over-did the praise.

Ranger 03-11-08 09:27 PM

I thought the old stage already had a mosh pit. Guess they just moved it closer to the front. How exciting.

I did not like the Carly song at all, I don't know what song the judges were listening to there.

Brooke was great, I hope she wins now, I think she's been the only one who has performed well every week.

I thought Chikezie was done this week, but this was probably his best performance so thqat might save him.

And yes, Prince Archeluta has definitely fallen off his throne.

Using this catalog has been a bad idea for the most part.

B.A. 03-11-08 10:24 PM

Kristy is the consensus pick by far in this household.

mwbmis 03-11-08 10:41 PM

Overall a solid night.

Unless otherwise noted always assume that I want Amanda to go home. Unfortunately, I think we're stuck with her for a while. I only listened to about the first 15 seconds of her performance tonight.

Tonight, Simon stated what I've felt about Jason Castro from his first performance. He always seemed to me to be some hippie singing by the campfire (or late at night in a dorm room) with a guitar. Now, while sometimes those performances may be good I don't think he has anything else to offer.

Syesha is in trouble b/c her performance was forgettable. I hope Ramiele is safe b/c she has a truly pretty voice, but she was beyond dull tonight. David H is one of my personal favorites, but tonight he was bad. Kristy's performance was an abomination. Honestly, I didn't think she even changed the song that much she just sang it with a twang.

As for the chosen one...past contestants have been eviscerated for forgetting their lyrics. As I recall they ripped apart Celebrity Rehab's own Jessica Sierra a few years ago for that very sin. What did they see in that performance in rehearsals to give him the pimp slot? Hopefully this will knock him down a few pegs b/c his "aw shucks" attitude is really making me dislike him a lot.

Charlie Goose 03-11-08 11:18 PM

Well, it looks like the bloom is off the Archuleta rose. That was a terrible performance, and at this stage it's inexcusable to forget the words. This kid is bordring on creepy.

Still, KLC was even worse with that shitkicking hee haw version.

David Cook was pretty good, but why does he have to do that faux-rocker roar in every song?

Brooke White is a great singer, and beautiful too. I wish they'd stop showing her husband though. :|

The best part of Jason Castro's segment was during his interview, watching the gnats swarm around his head.

Syesha and Ramiele weren't nearly as bad as they were made out to be, but I think one of them is leaving tomorrow.

Chikezie and Michael were very good.

Patman 03-11-08 11:20 PM

Syesha Mercado - "Got to Get You Into My Life" - good performance, even though the start was a little rocky, but the rest of the song settled into a nice groove. A negative is that she didn't really make me want to hum that song over and over like a sparkling performance will do, so I didn't feel a lot of inspiration emanating from her performance, overall.

Chikezie - "She's a Woman" - His manic performance was offset by his wardrobe, so it looked a little strange at times, but he provided a solid vocal performance, and had some fun with it.

Ramiele Malubay - "In My Life" - Though I wish she had sung in a higher key, her vocals had a nice lilt and melodic tone, very controlled, almost too controlled since it went into a monotonous place where she never was able to get out of a rut, and rendered the song inert.

Jason Castro - "If I Fell" - The more I hear him sing, the more I'm convinced he's a one-trick-pony, and his falsetto is weak, and his singing is labored on even the soft notes, and brings nothing to the song. His "labored" singing makes it seem like he's connecting with the song, but to me, it's just pandering for the votes.

Carly Smithson - "Come Together" - I thought her voice got stuffed in some strange place which resulted in her singing in her higher registers, but I wanted some mid-bass to her voice, and she only displayed the mid-bass tone in 2 lines, so I wasn't blown away by it, and it just sounded thin overall.

David Cook - "Eleanor Rigby" - I kinda hated how little of melody of the song remained after it got filtered through his rock-style vocals. The start was shaky, like he was uninterested in the song, but by the time he hits the chorus hard, his just went for it and committed to the performance and finished strong.

Brooke White - "Let It Be" - Now I would call that a safe performance, and I would have rather that she not play the piano while singing because she was distracted vocally in spots, and never got into a falsetto when she could have and just had to press on with the piano playing. Plus, the song is so repetitive most of the time. But, overall, still an earnest effort.

David Hernandez - "Saw Her Standing There" - I didn't like the arrangement, and it was too slow-sounding (like a 45 rpm single record played at 33 1/3 rpm on the record player), and lost that snap and urgency of the song itself. So, he tried something new, but it just didn't do the song justice.

Amanda Overmeyer - "You Can't Do That" - Well, she rebounded with a performance that totally made that song her own because I would not have ever believed McCarthy/Lennon wrote it. It was a-melodic as hell, but she made it work, and gave a solid performance on stage, but it'd sound pretty average on the radio. Also liked how her pants almost matched her hair.

Michael Johns - "Across the Universe" - a really strong vocal performance, bolstered by the acoustic sound (he sounds better with acoustic backing, as the amp'd instruments tended to drown him out). His vocals made for a nice melodic expression of the song. I liked it.

Kristy Lee Cook - "Eight Days a Week" - Wow, that was a manic-country-fried version of a classic that just didn't quite work, and she really needs to work on not looking a little bored during the performance. It might have sounded better if Alvin, Simon and Theodore joined her on stage.

David Archuleta - "We Can Work It Out" - Holy Crash and Burn! He dropped words and had no confidence, and just sort of stumbled through the song, and it was a below average performance. Yikes.

I think Chikezie or Kristy Lee Cook is going home (simply due to Chikezie barely registering with the voting viewers).

tommyp007 03-11-08 11:21 PM

I enjoyed Jacuzzi the best tonight, with the worst performance a tie between Amanda and KLC.

Patman 03-11-08 11:31 PM

Is it my imagination, or does Kristy need her upper lip waxed? (I tell ya, HDTV is not always the boon it's made out to be).

brainee 03-11-08 11:33 PM

Kristy's my pick to go home. That was hideous. Nothing wrong with putting a country spin on a Beatles song, in theory. Simple songs with strong melodies suit themselves to many styles. But that frenetic fiddle honky-tonk?!? :yack:

Did anyone else catch what might be a subtle dig at David A after David C's performance by Simon? About how if the voters start treating this as a talent contest, and not just a popularity contest, David C could very well win.

And yes, Archuletta blew the lyrics. Multiple times. As bland as it is, maybe he should stick to sappy ballads. I was sure he'd do something like "Long and Winding Road" or "Yesterday". He didn't earn any points in my book by saying he didn't like 60s songs, and didn't know a single Beatles song (only knowing the one he did from Stevie Wonder). I guess drug-toting, free-loving, long-hair hippies don't go over well in the God-fearing Archuletta household. Of course, David A will still get the most votes of anyone this week. Paula actually had good advice about handling dropping lyrics better. Look at Amanda! She didn't know any of the lyrics for her song, and still managed to work through it :)

David Cook is looking more and more like the Daughtry V2.0 AI was hoping for. He sticks to his alt-rock guns, delivers credible performances every time out. Of course he'll get voted out around 4th place, leaving us with something horrid like a David A/Carly final. Odds are least 50/50 of someone turning up a youtube video of another alt-rock band covering Eleanor Rigby the same way - but I don't really care.

I agree that Brooke was very good. I suppose one could play anal vocal critic and pick stuff apart. But real emotion came through in her performance. Plus I have a real soft spot for that song.

Sorry Amanda haters - she's around for another week. Come on, admit it! Wouldn't you rather have her indecipherable warbling instead of another sappy ballad? Besides, if you really hate her, you'll want her to go far enough to make the tour (isn't that top 10?). Going on the tour would be hell for Amanda.

Besides Kristy, David H and Ramiele might be a little vulnerable (but Kristy's outright suckage helped them out). David H just wasn't very good. And Ramiele lived up to her "Lullabye" moniker.

The results show is still 1 hour? If so, that's a lot of time for just one cut.

Heat 03-12-08 12:00 AM

I know that Kristy Lee Cook *should* be the one to go home, but my vote to leave is Ramiele Malubay. Just an "OK" performance, and it was really early in the night so many people would have missed it.

For me, tonight was either hit or miss - some did very well (David Cook, Michael Johns, Syesha Mercado, Brooke White, Chikieze) and others were painful to listen to (David Hernandez, David Archuleta, K.L. Cook). While a few played it save (Ramiele Malubay, Syesha Mercado, Jason Castro).

As far as Syesha Mercado goes, I can see her going at any time. Great performer, looks great, has great stage presence, but for some reason she's just standing out in this crowd. I also have her pegged as an early person to leave, probably the 9th or 10th spot - I really hope that she makes it to the Top 10, thus getting a little more exposure.

But that was brutal.

I really liked Brooke. Not the best performance by her tonight, but still good.

KLC has gotta go that was horrid.

Archuleta was a nightmare today.

Carly was fairly enjoyable.

Amanda. just crazy.

Rameile - Likeable, but the singing was very boring.

Chikeze - that was a major surprise. he really did good tonite.

mike45 03-12-08 01:17 AM

All the other performers remembered their lyrics, whether their songs were good, bad. or boring.

Archuleta forgot the lyrics. On principal, he should be the first off tomorrow.

Howcome you left off the total kid blunder - Archuleta from the poll? The kid, did not only messed up his song rendition but also - FORGOT THE LYRICS!

hey OP, next time dont be biased.... this poll is meaningless without that kid blunder

So, who do you think will go home after tonight's performance?

I've left off David Archuletta and Carly Smithson, the two favorites.

Vote for who you *think* will be voted off, not who you would like to see voted off. And votes are public, usernames as well as who they voted for will be shown (never used that option before, we'll see how it works out).

This poll will close at 1:30 am on March 12th (Wednesday) - I meant for it to close later than that but can't figure out how to modify the poll's options nor can I delete the thread and start over - would a moderator please change it to a 2-day poll? Thanks!

DAVID COOK: Horrendous rendition of "Eleanor Rigby". :jawdrop:

Cannot understand anybody who actually likes or understands the mood of the original thinking that that constipated 'rock' version was anything but an insult to one of the Beatles' greatest compositions. Thought it was telling that in the recap segment, they only played part of the chorus (which was bad enough...the plaintive lyrics just weren't meant to be shouted...which is why the original was set to strings.

We wrote off the "judges" comments last night as typical blathering, but I was flabbergasted to read some of the comments here from people who actually thought Cook was good last night (and I'm not even counting his Bela Lugosi getup against him). I just now rewatched the Youtube rerun (thinking I surely must have missed something)...and it was just as bad in the light of day. In fact, it was almost as bad as Hernandez & KLC.

Agree with most of the other comments. Liked Syesha & Chikeze's spins on the classics...fun & a little risky but not messing with the spirit of the original, either. Carly had good energy even if not much originality. Most of the others were just too safe & boring, even when they were pretty good technical covers (Malubay, Castro, Johns, Brooke).

The worst? Hard to say. Amanda was...well, Amanda. Compared to her more recent disasters, this one wasn't the bottom of the barrel. KLC's country version might have actually worked in a slower, country-bluesy fashion...the hyper-speed, kitchen-sink approach (I can still hear those ~shudder~fiddles sawing away maniacally) just didn't work at all. Archuletta...almost had to wonder if he wasn't trying to intentionally tank one performance feeling that he still had enough votes to stay safe but could reduce some of the 'frontrunner' status that might backfire (he made recent comments saying that he hoped the attention wouldn't work against him). The schmaltzy arrangement, poor performance, & muffed lyrics were bad...very, very bad.

Bad as the others were (including David "Winky" Cook), I still say that the overall bad performance (singing, dancing, dress, etc.) goes to...David Henandez!! Even the band was really bad with that one (in Kristy's case, the arrangement didn't work...in Hernandez's case, it just sounded like an old tinny mono AM radio version from the late 50's/early 60's. Very cheesy, wedding-singer type performance.

Now we can finally see why the Beatles' catalog was withheld from AI for so long. Hopefully, they'll immediately revoke the rights so last night's travesty can never be repeated. Bring back Barry Manilow & Peter Noone!!

1. There's a maximum of ten options on the poll choices.
2. The OP made the thread BEFORE the awful performance
3. Archuleta is staying around. Easily. Fans rally after bad performances -- it's typically after mediocre/"safe" performances that contestants go home.

I don't get the judges' love for David Cook. The guy is just another douchebag stuck in the 90's. He's terrible!
