I'll join in the "meh" chorus as well. It has some potential but I don't expect it to last long enough to care. What bugged me the most was how this one immortal dude was a society fixture in New York all throughout time. He was banging a famous artist, building world-renowned furniture, playing in a jazz band, etc. Wouldn't you want to keep a lower profile especially once photography came on the scene?

One thing I actually liked was rather than do the faux "oh no, I can't let anybody know my secret" (which has been done ad nauseum on every single TV show like this), he actually was truthful about his situation to people, and it just across as being really sarcastic. I found that rather funny and refreshing.

I thought the furniture thing was stupid though. I guess the point they were trying to make is that he has lived so many lifetimes that he has mastered so many fields, but that just came across as really clunky storytelling.

I am also not really understanding what the point was of the Indian curse. Or was it supposed to be a blessing?

Superman07 03-05-08 08:00 PM

I actually liked the furniture bit. When the friend went to go sell it I thought it was a knockoff that they were trying to pawn off. I definitely got a laugh when they showed the picture of the artist. :)

I forgot to mention earlier that I liked his hidden room. It speaks to his "other side", which is different from his love-less life he leads at the apartment (like the woman at the beginning). It had a certain bat-caveness about it, what with the pictures of times square over the years and his furniture "business".

lordwow 03-05-08 09:59 PM

Meh.

I agree with the "That's THE ONE?" sentiment. I couldn't pick her out when he was watching people getting off the train either.

The coolest part of the show was the Times Square Montage at the end.

But ya, I'll watch tomorrow. This is one of those shows that could have a ridiculously cool backstory/etc stuff that could get dug into. And also, nearly ever pilot sucks, so I'll give it a few episodes, as I like the premise.

Hopefully that gets better. I felt "the curse" and "the one" was some rather clunky writing to a fairly decent premise.

mphtrilogy 03-06-08 10:08 AM

what a weird show!

It has some slight potential, and in some respects reminds me of the much better executed "Life"

The sidekick detective was miscast, and poorly written.

I like the idea of interweaving the history lessons with modern cases, but it seems like the detective work and the cases themself take a back seat to action of who this guy is.

I will give the show a few eps to flesh out a gameplan flow, but I think the weight of its absurd premise will ultimately do it in.

DJariya 03-06-08 01:55 PM

Episode 2 airs tonight after the Idol results show. I expect more inflated ratings.

lordwow 03-06-08 06:32 PM

Interesting to hear how they changed his character away from being a brooding mess from the poor original pilot reactions:

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York is a city in constant flux. Today's corner deli is tomorrow's Starbucks and, the day after that, you find a high-rise with big shiny letters spelling "TRUMP."
New Amsterdam

Zuleikha Robinson and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau star in "New Amsterdam."

The Manhattan sidewalk is packed not only with people absorbed in that moment, but also with ghosts from the past. Anyone, it seems, might have crossed your path before. Alexander Hamilton? The Olsen twins?

But what if you had been around, year after year, to experience it firsthand? John Amsterdam has. That's the premise of the new Fox drama "New Amsterdam."

Even without Botox, he looks maybe 35. But John has lived on this island since the 1640s, when, as a Dutch soldier, he saved the life of a Native American woman. In return, she rewarded him with immortality.

Ever since, the citizens surrounding him have come and gone. But John is stuck, fated to be left behind by each generation -- until he meets his One True Love. Only then will the spell be broken. He will join her and grow old. And he's ready. After all this time, he wants to get on with his life.

Premiering 9 p.m. EST Tuesday (with a second episode 9 p.m. EST Thursday), "New Amsterdam" is a mystical romance. It also is a time-spanning fantasy -- and a contemporary police procedural: John's present-day job is that of an NYPD homicide detective. A man who might never die solves murders for a living.

"When I heard about a show with an immortal detective, I was like, 'Ummm, I'm not sure,' " says Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("Kingdom of Heaven") from his home in Denmark. But after reconsidering, he now stars as John.

"Once you get through the crazy setup," he explains, "you realize the character faces the same problems we all face -- he's just been facing them a long, long time."

The first episode of "New Amsterdam" is effective in establishing this "crazy" (and rather ambitious) premise. (Granted, it's a premise that bears similarity to Pete Hamill's best-selling 2002 novel, "Forever," as Hamill has complained. The series' executive producer David Manson has countered he was unaware of the book's existence until production on the show wrapped.)

But the premiere's success is all the more impressive to anyone who got a peek at the original version of this pilot, which was sent to critics last summer. A then-and-now comparison reveals a promising concept that, in its first rendition, had potentially fatal flaws.

"New Amsterdam" 2.0 deftly fixes those flaws, and gets the series off to a strong start, thanks to several scenes reshot, a minor role recast, some strategic re-editing, and -- underlying all the tweaks -- a heightened sense on the part of the producers for what the series is about. Right now the pilot system is losing favor among budget-slashing networks. But the pilot for "New Amsterdam" served a valuable purpose: it was a good way to find the weak spots.

Shot on location last March, the initial version is "what I euphemistically call 'the selling document,' " says Manson (whose past series include TNT's "Saved" and FX's "Thief").

"But I think the network realized there was still work that needed to be done on it" once the series was ordered, adds Manson, speaking from L.A. "Fortunately, Fox gave us the resources to go out and do the necessary reshooting and reconceiving."

The biggest modification: Originally, John Amsterdam was bitter and depressed about his immortality.

He happens to be a recovering alcoholic. He has been sober 15,495 days, he declares at an AA meeting. But then he got overwrought after having possibly crossed paths with The One while on a crowded subway platform. He felt compelled to have a drink.

This crucial scene took place at the bar owned by Omar (Stephen McKinley-Henderson), Amsterdam's loyal confidant.

"If I can find her, time will have value," he told Omar, insisting that's "a good thing." Yet he seemed pretty desperate while saying so.

"He's waited 400 years for this moment and he finally has it, and then he decides to lose his sobriety over it? That was confusing to the viewer," says Manson.

In the bar scene as re-shot, Amsterdam looks happy instead.

"This is like nothing I've ever felt," he tells Omar. Somewhere near him on that subway platform, "she was there," he says. "I know she exists!"

So do viewers, who saw his apparent soul mate: a lovely young woman named Dr. Sara Dillane (Alexie Gilmore).

This time, John feels no need for a bender.

Coster-Waldau says playing a cheerier Amsterdam "was a big change for me. I had to redo my analysis of the character" when reshooting the scenes last summer. "But it made sense: He should be a character of hope, not disillusionment."

Besides brightening the hero's mood overall, other changes were made for the New "New Amsterdam." John's partner, Eva Marquez (Zuleikha Robinson), is introduced much earlier in the revised episode. And right away Amsterdam identifies himself to the audience as a cop, whereas, in the initial version, he didn't spell out his profession for almost five minutes, while, instead, the action dwelled on him in his 17th-century persona.

"We didn't want the viewer to wonder for too long who this guy is," says Manson.

Who is he? A 21st-century guy who knows better than any New Yorker that life goes on -- but, so far, not for him.

hahn 03-06-08 06:36 PM

Meh. Angel without the witty writing, dark humor, and excellent supporting cast.

lordwow 03-06-08 08:26 PM

"What if your head gets cut off?"
"That hasn't happened yet."

Mysteryfan 03-06-08 10:11 PM

I liked this episode. The partner is annoying (and can't act), but I liked the way they did the back story.

Giantrobo 03-06-08 11:10 PM

His partner is soooo beautiful.

Zuleikha Robinson

So either I'm not watching FOX at all lately or they did zero promotion for this show. I think I can skip 8 episodes. If they cancelled Drive after 3 episodes, what should make me think this will be sticking around?

When do Bones and House return? :hscratch:

MScottM 03-07-08 08:13 AM

Overall I liked the second episode more than the first. However, I don't like the "once you find your true love, the spell is broken and you can age and die" thing. I would think that having grown use to having no fear of death, that it wouldn't take any time for him to be killed after it is possible. I can see it now, he meets the woman and spell is broken. Two hours later, he takes two in the chest and is dead. End of story.

You don't really need to promo a show with an American Idol lead-in. It was rated #1 in the timeslot on Tuesday, and probably last night too.

As someone who proudly admits he DOESN'T watch American Idol and WOULD HAVE watched this show had it been properly promoted (since NOTHING new is really on right now)... what does your comment mean? They could put Craig's "Animals Close Up with a Wide-Angle Lens" on, and it would get good ratings. -ohbfrank-

Right. And remember, networks are in the business of selling ratings to advertisers. They don't care who's watching, as long as someone is.

See Jadzia's sticky on the dates of all the returning shows.

I bet the writers thought they were incredibly clever when they decided to actually name the main character Amsterdam .... but since he's 400 years old, shouldn't the series be called OLD Amsterdam?

Quick, bring back MOONLIGHT.

mugwump 03-08-08 11:22 AM

I got around to watching the second episode last night and pretty much hated it. The police procedural part was so clearly telegraphed that it would take a real dope to not see what was coming there. But my biggest question is how two beautiful people like John and his lovely 40s-era wife managed to produce such a portly and homely child. And having one of his kids serve as a sidekick in every era was pretty ridiculous. I'm afraid my very meager hopes for this show are pretty much gone at this point.

Nth Power 03-08-08 04:23 PM

I finished the second episode and overall it's OK. I'll watch for another episode or so, but unless it gets better I'm going to stop watching.

I think it would work better if they made him a little more hard luck. As it is, it feels like solutions to his problems come too easily (other than finding his "one", which is corny too IMO).
Omar is a nice touch, but I don't care much for his police partner. There doesn't seem to be much chemistry there and her character is boring.

That was my favorite exchange in the show. :D

I thought the 2nd episode was much better than the first -- I'll keep watching for now.

riley_dude 03-09-08 02:15 PM

I think the second episode fell in viewership by something like 22%.

That could be because Fox did their usual day flipping and alot of people did not know it was on - like me. I saw after I watched it on my DVR that it was showing another on Thursday. I liked it and will add it to the DVR for now.

Superman07 03-09-08 08:50 PM

I thought the second episode was better than the first as well. Whoever said this is better than Journeyman is (was...??? :( ) I'd ask you to take another look.

I'd be willing to put money down that this is another show that will be Foxed. I think a lot of the elements are there and it's a well produced show, but too many elements are also missing. Maybe if he has interaction with the doctor that will give it some additional legs. As it stands, no pun intended, there are too many weak elements. Particularly his partner. They have little chemistry and she's not the best actress. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about Omar being his son. I think they tried to take the Rachel concept from Highlander, and one-up it. I don't think it's working.
