Fox needs to combine its Monday night franchises. How about this:

John Amsterdam, side-by-side with Jack Bauer, fighting killer robots from the future.

I think it would have been a more interesting show if instead of being a cop, he used all his past life experiences to work undercover in various settings. He could have been a renegade on his own, and each episode he pretends to be an artist or a lawyer or one of the many professions he had once done. That would have been more interesting than him just being a cop.

And instead of solving crimes he could have been helping out all his various descendants in different ways. I liked that one episode the best where he solved the murder of his great-great-great grandson. That would have a cool idea for a series, if every episode, he was finding different branches of his family tree and helping them get their lives on track, sort of like Quantum Leap.

If they were to continue the show, they could certainly enhance those elements of the show which I agree are the most interesting parts of the show- interesting enough I feel for the show to continue in a slightly retooled fashion. Whenever we have seen immortal characters they are either vampires or something else with a normal progeny. Amsterdam talking to his grandson as an eledery man was a very interesting concept. The ratings have been respectable hopefully they give it a chance to grow.

New Amsterdam has been canceled

It's been a bad weekend for Fox's bubble shows.

Just hours after word leaked that the network had sacked Back to You, sources confirm to me exclusively that New Amsterdam has been euthanized as well.

I wish I could say this is a big loss, but based on what I saw it's not. I put the time and effort in on the 8 that aired. Since it appears that number 8 was the last, I'm glad it ended with him walking down the dark street back into his city. It appears that the question was answered with regard to the Dr. Maybe she was and he had to truely feel it rather than "freedom". <shrug>

Maybe the fact that I used the term 'effort' above is a key indicator that this show had too many hurdles before it. I do think that if it had more time to develop it could have improved on itself. However, I think it needed to have 70% of those kinks wokred out upfront.

I thought the shows' lead was very capable. I'll be happy to look into something if he is the show up in it. I'll put his new boss that eventually showed up into that category as well.

He had a funny supporting role in "The Baker" which starred the other English actor from Band of Brothers and Life.

Not a shocker at all. Once FOX condensed the episode order from 13 to 8, the signs were already clear the show wouldn't make it.

I thought it was an okay filler show during the strike. I liked the lead actor and hope he gets another shot in American TV.

lordwow 05-11-08 10:22 PM

sucks the strike probably helped kill this one off. I liked it, but never could seem to get home to watch it.

Jadzia 05-11-08 10:34 PM

I would have been shocked if it had been renewed. I figured this one was DOA already.

Gizmo 05-11-08 10:45 PM

The shoe was delayed several times so its no surpirse it got canceled. Glad I deleted them from my DVR now.

I thought last summer or early last fall that it was reported somewhere that the show wouldn't even air, they were just going to let it collect dust? Then after the strike, they threw it on just to fill time?

He is always good. His debut role was as the lead in the original danish 'Nightwatch'

I agree to many kinks that never got worked out - the show tried to have a little bit of everything, but came away with nothing.

Groucho 05-12-08 08:49 AM

Which immortal detective show is this -- the vampire one, or the other one?

rfduncan 05-12-08 08:57 AM

Cancelled? I thought FOX had only ordered 8 episodes and had shelved them indefinitely. I think what is really being said is that FOX decided not to renew the show (subtle difference).

That the show even made it on air at all was due to FOX's desperation for new programming during the writers' strike. I never honestly expected them to produce more than the 8 that were shot last summer...

firteen88 05-12-08 11:29 AM

Sucks, I was really starting to like this show.....NOT!!

Icon769 05-13-08 10:16 PM

The show seemed to have an interestting premise. Although I haven't watched it yet, I do have all the shows saved on my DVR. Now that it's been axed, is it still worth watching? Should I watch it or just delete it?

The strike is likely the only thing that gave it a chance in the first place.

I don't know why, but I like this show. Always entertaining.

Looks like the immortal detectives aren't so immortal after all.

mrhan 05-29-08 10:57 AM

If you liked the premise of the show check out "The Man From Earth".
