That's why I said Hawkins sounded weird, because it was (to my ears) a distinctive yet unidentifiable accent. Maybe it sounds "natural" to someone out there; I'm curious as to what locale that would be.

Sure is. And a very well developed sub-genre within SF, too. It's part of the reason many fans prefer the term "SF" (i.e. speculative fiction) to "sci-fi".

Examples: A Boy and His Dog, The Quiet Earth, The Day After, Road Warrior

Yeah, this was the episode I saw a few months ago. For those that forget, DB Sweeney was in Season 1 as the head of Ravenwood.
