The Simpsons - That 90's Show - 1/27/08

I know we're not supposed to post TV listings until day off, but hopefully I can make an exception cause this one's a little special for me. My colleague Kurt Loder was made into a character for the show. I've been waiting since April to mention something. Should be fun.

Here's Kurt's piece on the experience.

Call Of 'The Simpsons,' By Kurt Loder
A longtime fan finally plays Springfield.

My showbiz dreams are modest. For years I've yearned for just two things:

1. To be a body on "Law & Order: SVU": You know, the random corpse that sometimes gets tripped over in the show's opening moments, and soon has Olivia and Elliott or Munch and Fin snapping on their white, latex crime-scene gloves? I could kill this part. Since it requires no acting, or even speaking, or, frankly, any talent at all, I'm eminently qualified to ace it.

2. To appear on "The Simpsons": Ah, the great scripts, the yellow skin, the look of chinless befuddlement — please, sign me up.

The "Law & Order" gig had always seemed the likeliest to transpire. The show is shot in New York. I live in New York. I frequently encounter their crews shooting around town. (Although Olivia and Elliott and Munch and Fin never seem to be in evidence. Probably all in their trailers calculating the hefty residuals that accrue for a show that's been on the air for nearly a decade.) However, despite my shining suitability to play a character of the deceased persuasion, I had yet to get that "L&O" call. You never know, though.

"The Simpsons," on the other hand, had always seemed an obvious long shot — no, let's be real: a complete impossibility. The show is based in "Springfield." Nobody even knows where that is. I had no connections to work, nobody I could call up and beg. To be honest, I'd pretty much given up on this dream.

But then, out of the blue last summer, I was contacted by "The Simpsons." They wanted me to be on the show. What a cruel prank, I thought. But then a script arrived by overnight express. Naturally, it was very funny. The concept was an episode about the '90s. I had had a show on MTV throughout the '90s. I was thus a '90s person. Well ... OK. What next?

Since "The Simpsons" is a show in which everyone onscreen is a cartoon, very little of a thespian nature was required of me. One afternoon, I made my way to a Midtown studio to record my lines. Snugging on a headset, I began receiving gentle direction from one of the show's writers in faraway L.A. I did what I thought was my very best to hit just the right tones and rhythms. Oddly, several takes of each line were required nevertheless. There were allusions to an imaginary '90s band called Sadgasm. A couple of improvised lines were tacked on at the end. And that was it.

How did the show come out? No idea. I haven't seen it yet. So I'll definitely be watching when it airs this Sunday night. Maybe you will too (8 p.m., on Fox). At the very least, I hope Dick Wolf or one of the other "Law & Order" execs is tuned in. Because despite being a cartoon, I think my cadaverous potential will be clear. I even look kinda dead.

Does this mean this episode will be funny like the show was in the 90's?

Wait a sec, didn't Homer win a Grammy in the mid-80s?

I know, absurd, right? I was bored at work and Kurt wrote his piece so it compelled me to post.

Finger's crossed that this is better than the last new one. I need a good Simpsons ep to get me through until Lost on Thursday.

This show was funny but it was also a complete mess. They're just not writing stories that make sense anymore.

It wasn't laugh-out-loud funny but it was a nice trip down 90's memory lane.

I have to admit I chuckled at "Marvin Cobain", but mostly it was just another "meh" episode.

I thought the beginning was funny but it tailed off towards the end

I know I've seen that spoofed somewhere else before this.

This episode was just a bunch of 90s references thrown together.

Although I thought the episode was funny for the recent years of the Simpsons, and I enjoyed all of the cultural references to the 90s, it completely ignored the Simpsons timeline of what happened to Homer and Marge in the 80s.

"I know I've seen that spoofed somewhere else before this."

Family Guy spoofed the Back to the Future exchange in "Meet the Quagmires."

I liked it, it wasn't laugh out funny but a nice satire of the 90's. As far as ignoring the Simpsons' 80's history, they've had plenty of "retroactive continuity" for quite some time. They even addressed that tongue in cheek early in the episode in reference to the family's recalculated ages.

I liked Marge's "Rachel" hair style.

Family Guy has done the "Marvin" bit twice in the shows run, it was also used in the "Black to the Future" bit.

Seems pretty bad that "The Simpsons" are using jokes done on "Family Guy" (twice!).

The 90s references were pretty funny. But the professor of "higher learning" was spot on, unfortunately.

Can they please put an end to this show so I can stop watching? At this point, I'm just watching for completion's sake.

It's interesting to see people getting upset about an episode that "revises history" when all the characters on the show have been the exact same age for the past 18 seasons.

Loved Homer "slamming" the beaded curtain shut.

For me, this was perhaps the best episode since the 24 spoof. The biggest chuckle for me was the Marvin Cobain bit.

I too am a bit upset that it kind of ruins the "time line" of the Simpsons....

The story kind of fizzled out in the middle of the episode, nothing new was brought up - and haven't we seen the Marge falls in love with a smart guy before?? did we need a rehash of this again?

They should have just shown what the family was like in the 90's (over the top style)
