Lost refresher course. Definitive list of unanswered questions. MAJOR SPOILERS

With the new season of Lost coming up soon, I rewatched the first 3 seasons and thought I'd post pretty much every unanswered question about the show. If I left any out, feel free to add some. If one of them were already answered and I missed it, give the answer.

#1 What is the smoke monster? Rousseau seems to know what it is when she holds Sayid as prisoner in season one. They hear it out in the jungle and she goes outside with a gun and Says if they are lucky it will only be a bear. Sayid says something like it could be that monster. Rousseau replies "there is no such thing as monsters".

#2 Why does the psychic warn Claire that evil surrounds her baby and she must be the only one to raise it?

#3 What are "the whispers"?

#4 What exactly is Rousseau referring to in season one when she tells Sayid about the sickness that made her team "Lost"? She says it killed them, but she states SHE killed her husband,Robert, who was stranded with her. She also tells Sayid to watch his people "closely" before he goes back to them. (This could mean the others somehow brainwash whoever they want to join them which could explain how the stewardess ended up with them).

#5 Who were the skeletons in the cave in season one and what were the white and black stones Jack took from them?

#6 Did the island make it possible for the 46 Losties to survive the plane crash ?

#7 Is there any significance to the connections between these people and events?

-Boone & Sawyer in the police staion.
-Jack's father and Sawyer in the bar in Australia
-Locke working for Hurley's box company
-Jack and Desmond in the stadium
-Shannon's father and Jack's wife in the same car wreck
-Eko's brothers plane crashing on the island
-Kelvin and Sayid
-Ana Lucia and Jack's father
-Ana Lucia, Jack's father & Sawyer (Jack's father briefly running into Sawyer when jacks father opens the car door)
-the psychic that Claire met and later on Mr. Eko spoke to about his daugher's miracle
-Desmond and Libby meeting in the coffee shop
-Desmond and Charlie on the street
-Jack and Claire being stepbrother/stepsister
-Cassidey (women Sawyer conned) and Kate
-Charlie and Desmond meeting onthe street
-Charlie and Nadia

#8 Where did the Polar bear/shark with Dharama logo come from ?

#9 Does Walt have some kind of powers and why did the others want to take him?

#10 Do Hurley's numbers have any significance to the story ?

#11 Who started the black smoke fire at the end of season 1 and why ?

#12 When Rousseau steals Clarie's baby, she mentions she heard the others whispering they were coming for the boy thinking they were referring to the baby. Later on, the others kidnap Walt. Could this mean the others and the whispers are connected ?

#13 Why is Claire seeing Walt when he's not really there?

#14 What made the blast doors in the swan close in season 2 ?

#15 Why does the Dr. in the Dharma orientation videos use different names (Mark Whickman, Edgar Halowax, Marvin Candle) ...and they all relate to candles?

#16 What is the map with the question mark that Locke found ?
#17 What is the four toed statue?

#18 Why did Desmond wake up in the jungle naked ?

#19 Where is the food that is dropped on the island coming from if no one ever sees the plane drop it ?

#20 Who is the lady in the jewelery store and how can she see the future?

#21 How can Desmond see the future?

#22 Why did the smoke monster spare Eko the first time but kill him the second?

#23 Why did Richard look the same age as he is now when Ben ran into him in the jungle as a child?

#24 Why did Jacob say "help me" to Locke and why did Locke hear him and not Ben ?

CKMorpheus 01-22-08 11:32 PM

This list is exactly why I will never watch the show.

Giles 01-22-08 11:42 PM

all those question gave me a migrane.

dan30oly 01-22-08 11:46 PM

I was thinking of re-watching them all again soon, but after being reminded of everything in that list I think I'll pass.

But you will post in a thread about a show you don't watch telling people that don't care whether you watch the show or not that you don't watch the show.

Yeah I made this thread to post answers and questions for Lost, but seems like everyone is threadcrapping.

cdollaz 01-23-08 08:14 AM

That list is why I do watch the show. I love this kind of stuff.

+1

People, if you don't like the show that's cool and all, but I don't need to read about it in a thread NOT titled 'Your thoughts on LOST'

There are MANY shows I don't like on the air right now, but I don't feel the need to post in their threads and threadcrap.

Brian Gentz 01-23-08 08:22 AM

several of those have answers, Don't have time now... But if no one has gotten to them when I get back, I'll drop some knowledge ;)

Walt has the ability to draw things to him, he also has the ability to make things die. Boone's sister saw walt right before she died. On the abc.com mobisodes there are about 12 different types of dead birds sitting outside Walt's boarded up cell. Also when walt was in his mother's home he had a bird fly to him or something like that, I forget if it died or not. Locke saw walt when he was left for dead but Walt said it wasnt his time or whatever. Walt's the bird-watching grim reaper.

I remember the producers saying on the dvd commentaries that the logo on the shark was just an easter egg. They never expected anyone to see it.

AGREED!!! That's exactly why I watch the show. Last weekends I finally bought Season 3 and rewatched it, and there was a ton of stuff I didn't remember or notice when watching it live. FANTASTIC stuff. The only thing I can venture a guess at is #23, which I noticed as well. The only thing I can think of is that maybe he was born on the island and he ages very slowly. Just a stab though, I have no idea.

Far, FAR from confirmed, but the online Lost "game" that's going on now kind of suggests that they are
Spoiler:
Amelia Earhart and the guy flying along with her (forget the name, Sullivan maybe?). Supposedly in the episode where Juliet was at the airport in Portland, the name of the airport was an anagram for Amelia Earhart. Lindelof and Cuse, in their podcast for that episode, said something about there being a hidden clue in the episode which might lead to who Adam and Eve (the skeletons) are. Then during this "game," Earhart's name was brought up (in a radio broadcast that was from the past, which could be related to the song Hurley heard on that radio). So that's why people speculated it could very well be Earhart and her partner.

The stones? No idea.

I'm pretty sure it was Rousseau, no? It was just a setup on her part to get Aaron.

I think so for some of them, but there were people who died right?

#7 Is there any significance to the connections between these people and events?
Is this just showing that its a small world, and that most of these people had contact with one another?

#8 Where did the Polar bear/shark with Dharama logo come from ?
On the season 2 DVD extras (I think) one of the writers/producers said the logo on the shark was put there as a joke and was not meant to be seen.

#9 Does Walt have some kind of powers and why did the others want to take him?
Yes he has some kind of powers, what kind was never made clear. Remember when he was in Australia with his stepdad. The bird that flew into the window was a not indigenous to the region. Also I always thought the Polarbear was there because Walt "thought it up" after seeing it in Hurleys? comic book. The others took him to learn more about him.

#11 Who started the black smoke fire at the end of season 1 and why ?
I thought the others started this fire as a decoy, so they could get Walt.

#13 Why is Claire seeing Walt when he's not really there?
This was actually Shannon, unless Claire is seeing him also. I'm 8 episodes into season 3.

#14 What made the blast doors in the swan close in season 2 ?
I thought this was because the food dropped from the sky? That way whoever was in the hatch would not see. Also I don't think it was dropped from the sky. I think it was staged to look like that by the Others or the Dharma people if they are different.

#17 What is the four toed statue?
I would love to know this answer.

#19 Where is the food that is dropped on the island coming from if no one ever sees the plane drop it ?
Maybe its being staged to look like a drop.

The question mark turned out to be the Pearl station, where the video monitors are. I think the map is basically irrelevant at this point, but maybe there were more hidden mysteries in there (like some of the notes written around the edges) that we'll learn about later.

wahlers 01-23-08 09:24 AM

I thought the polar bear and the shark came from the zoo...

Big Boy Laroux 01-23-08 10:22 AM

yeah, it was pretty well established that the polar bear and shark were part of the animal experiments Dharma was doing. Thus the bear cage (where sawyer was put) and the underwater base (with shark surgery room, where jack was kept).

reverie 01-23-08 11:03 AM

Okay, I'm caught up for once (we only watch things on DVD), so I'm safe here... hooray! ;)

But for the life of me, I can't remember any shark! When was there a shark?

As for the questions, I always assumed the whipers were just the Others.. communicating and playing mind games?

Beginning of Season 2 I think, after the the Others blow up the raft. Sawyer & Jin are treading water, and we see an underwater shot of a shark (branded with a Dharma logo) swim by.

Better question is why they had to show the ridiculous "flash forward" and ruin the series for me...

I am torn on whether to watch or give it up this season....

firteen88 01-23-08 11:45 AM

Alot of your unanswered questions do have answers to them already. (I think the other posts went through them pretty well) Some of your questions will probably never get a definitive answer (the numbers).

#2 Why does the psychic warn Claire that evil surrounds her baby and she must be the only one to raise it?
Didn't we find out ina flashback later on, that he was a fraud? I think he admitted that to someone (jacks dad I think??) maybe somebody got to him and made him do it?

#7 Is there any significance to the connections between these people and events?
I doubt it, other than it being fun for the viewers to spot out

#8 Where did the Polar bear/shark with Dharama logo come from ?
They were part of experiments by Dahrma

13 Why is Claire seeing Walt when he's not really there?
I don't think Claire ever saw Walt. Only Shannon and Sayid did.

#14 What made the blast doors in the swan close in season 2 ?
the food drop. Now, whose dropping the food and why is another question.

#17 What is the four toed statue?
They didn't even touch on this in season 3. Hope they get back to it in season 4

#21 How can Desmond see the future?
Maybe the flash after the key turn messed with his brain?

#22 Why did the smoke monster spare Eko the first time but kill him the second?
The first time it looked like it was scanning him (you can see pcs of Ekos life within the smoke) maybe to try and see what kind of person he was.

#23 Why did Richard look the same age as he is now when Ben ran into him in the jungle as a child?
great question. My guess would be that the island is causing him not to age for whatever reason. Why just him? I have no idea. Hope they explain it.

#24 Why did Jacob say "help me" to Locke and why did Locke hear him and not Ben ?
Hopefully we'll learn more about Jacob. I would say he isn't real but he DID show up in that cabin.

I can't wait until season 4. I have never enjoyed a show as much as I do with Lost. It's amazing!

What was ridiculous about it? I thought it was GREAT. It was the last thing I was expecting. Just because we know Jack and Kate get off the island (which I think will happen early in season 4) doesn't give away anything. It only raises more questions and will make the flashbacks/forwards that much more interesting.

Maybe for you but not for me, it kills any suspense. Before they always had the will they get off or won't they now they have Jack and Kate got off and his life is a mess and he wants to go back... big deal.

Ruined the series for me.

If there's one thing I learned from Babylon 5 is that any flash forward sequence can only be taken at face value without all of the information. I know the writers/producers know the basic storyline until the end of the series, if they are half as creative as JMS, you may see that flash forward sequence in a completely different light by the end of the series.

One thing to add: Who died in the flash forward sequence in the finale of Season 3? I have my assumptions, but it was never definitized.
