Tonight's episode was pretty bad. Big Guns was pretty bad, and delusional.

Goldberg74 01-23-08 08:39 PM

I'm glad that we don't have another Phil Stacey this season.

That's counts for both the "new dad" and the "military singer."

The dude with the tie around his head that sang with his sister had me rolling.

Jadzia 01-23-08 11:52 PM

The only thing I remember from tonight's episode is making a bunch of "hymen" jokes.

ytrez 01-24-08 09:28 AM

I liked the airforce girl. I'm sad :( she didn't make it. What beautiful eyes.....

Seriously, if your last name is Hymen, you've heard a lot of jokes and you ought to be careful enough not to name your son "Oliver".

It was spelled Highman though.

But the same producers have to decide who to feature during the show, like filming their home, family and friends (and dreaded garbage cans when necessary) away from the audition. I can't imagine that kind of decision being made in just a few seconds. Anybody know how they pick the people to feature during the show?

I really can't tell.

They should have her sing that one guy's "No Sex Allowed" song.

Thought the Air Force girl actually did pretty well (my wife, a former All-State Chorus soprano, mentioned that "Black Velvet" was a hard choice of song). The pilot woman didn't have a lot of pizzazz in her performance but had a nice, pure voice. If it was her nerves the judges were worried about as they mentioned, I believe anybody who can fly one of those huge cargo planes can probably conquer her nerves.

She wasn't great...just saying that she did as well as some of the ones who made it through. I'm not factoring in her military credentials as a positive or negative.

While the producers obviously want some variety (based upon past selections...they seem to always want a goth/rocker girl, high school sweetheart, average dude, plus-size woman, hip dude, Fabio dude, etc.), they do tend to lean toward the younger, attractive, MARKETABLE types, IMHO (speaking overall...of course, there are exceptions).

Didn't they have like 20 semi-finalists selected last year prior to the initial rounds of public voting for the final 12?

Heat 01-25-08 02:18 AM

Yeah, the final 20 are voted on so the picture can't be of the final 16. Anyway, I'm having trouble getting that page to load up, must be videos on it (on dialup here). Can somebody put a link to just the photo?

As far as that kid who won Star Search, wasn't Lisa Tucker from a couple seasons ago a Star Search winner? I know that she was on the broadway production of The Lion King. Being on Star Search doesn't bother me but I still don't know what to think about the Irish girl who has a record out.

And here's a blurb about that Australian guy with the big mouth, from www.votefortheworst.com :

Michael Johns is another notable contestant. An Australian import, he was formerly the lead singer of a band called The Rising and a band called Film. He also changed his name from Michael Lee. Michael was signed to Maverick Records with Film, and they were supposed to release a debut album in 2003. But according to one of the group members, Michael allegedly screwed over Film by leaving the band and stealing their songs, claiming he wrote them. This guy sounds like a real winner. I wonder why he isn’t already famous?
Here's another article from Vote for the Worst (via another site) with who is supposedly in the top 24:

http://www.votefortheworst.com/20080...er_who_made_it

Major spoilers of course.

I thought they narrowed it down to 24. You know the episode where they each (one-by-one) go up to that long room and sit in front of R,P, & S. After that week, they perform and viewers vote and we lose 2 guys and 2 girls for a couple of weeks or more.

Major spoilers of course.

I'm just relaying what it says. 16.

Heat 01-25-08 01:36 PM

Those pictures must be from some publicity thing they were doing during the Hollywood round – those aren’t the final 16 overall and I’m convinced that all 16 of them are not even in the Top 24. Remember that right now there are 24 finalists and there will not be fewer until voting begins.

Those shots must be from some publicity stunt during, say, the final 40 or 50, during the last round or two of cuts. My guess is that they were split into groups of two or three and each group made a commercial.

And I double checked on Lisa Tucker - she was a finalist on Star Search (David (can't remember his last name), the kid with sore vocal cords, won Star Search. Not a big deal in my opinion, it's not like anybody watched Star Search.

LorenzoL 01-25-08 01:43 PM

I have to agree with Heat that those pictures are not from the final 16 and it could be publicity photos of different groups.

I'm not impressed with the auditions round so far and the "train wrecks" are even worse this year...

Charlie Goose 01-25-08 01:57 PM

At this point, here's the breakdown of what I think makes up the bad singers:

50% - Just trying to get on TV
40% - Mentally ill
10% - Normal singers who are clueless and really think they're good

IMHO, of course.
