I can't imagine DirecTV is actually going to make use of ReplayTV software on it's boxes, I'm guessing this has more to do with what patents Replay holds over TiVo.

DirecTV extended a deal ("don't sue us") with TiVo to 2010 a while back, so it's sitting pretty well for a while.

Those were my first "Ti-Faux" til I got DirecTV.

I think I will go back to Comcast once they roll out the Tivo boxes to my area. I heard they are testing them in New England already. Or if I go back to cable I can use an HD Tivo.

They do (did?) as a DVR software-only company. Obviously, not a very popular one.

My guess is they bought ReplayTV for the dvr patents it owns. This will officially end any chance of seeing a new Directv/Tivo model.

I love how all of this goes through without a hitch, but the Sirius/XM merger has been held up for almost a year!!

Replay-TV software with DirecTV would be quite nice if you ask me - better than the current DVR. I'm still using one of my Replays with a regular DirecTV receiver.

I initially read it as Tivo buying ReplayTV as well.

The day when DirecTV forces me to swtich from my HD-Tivo box to their version is the day I leave DirecTV.

I have been happy with the service but have zero loyalty to that company. The Tivo far outweighs the satellite on the benefit scale, so I follow the Tivo.

I know there's a clock running on this, but I don't know what it is. Anybody? I know those old satellites will go out of use sooner than later.

I thought the HD-Tivo wasn't compatible with satellite?

I was thinking there was an DirecTivo Hd that was released a few years ago. I think it was originally almost a grand.

I like my TiVos a lot, but DirecTV's software on the latest HD boxes is good too. The only thing missing is dual live buffers. The huge number of HD channels on DirecTV more than makes up for whatever difference there is.

A couple of things in play:

The HR10 (HD TiVo box) can not properly receive the mpeg-4 channels. Locals in HD are in that format as well as all of the new HD channels.

The Sunday Ticket in HD is still available in the mpeg-2 standard but from what I've read, it barely avoided making the transition to the newer standard. My guess is that it will be exclusively mpeg-4 next year.

DTV's contracted legal truce with TiVo runs through 2010. On another board the consensus is that DTV made this move to stave off any potential copyright issues (i.e. they can tell TiVo to piss off) when the agreement lapses.

My sentiments exactly. When my DirecTiVo get decommissioned by DTV, I'm outta there. That is the only thing that keeps me with them. All of my network TV as of this season is being recorded and an over the air antenna on TiVo HD.

I finally bit the bullet in May and got one of DirecTV's crappy HD DVRs. I really wanted to get HD on my new living room TV set. The saving grace is that I still have my DirecTivos in my bedroom & basement, so when the DVR decides not to record a show, or more often, records a show and there is no audio other than sound effects & music, I still usually have a backup on the D*Tivo.

I decided to continue to support Tivo by buying their stock. My investment is already up 41% and I wish I would have bought more.

I have two 5040s. Don't use 'em but still pay for one for some reason (cause i never cancelled obviously). Is that bad? lol

So I would guess it didn't have the lifetime subscription? (One's with that turned on tend to get some good bids.)
