Sports is an amazing difference. But it also depends greatly on the size of your tv and how close you sit to it. If you are sitting 15' away and watching a 32" HDTV, it don't mean squat. I watch on a 122" screen from 13' away and everything is a huge difference. The only non-hd shows I watch are on USA, and it reminds me so much of watching VHS, but I like the shows.

But watching a football game where it looks like you are looking out a window instead of at a tv is bliss.

Sports is the greatest difference but if you can't see a difference between an HD broadcast of say, The Sopranos or Heroes, and a standard broadcast of those, then you are A)blind or B)don't know how to set up your TV properly.

Football is the shit in HD.

yes!!, if you got a nice HD set not a cheap one and using the good connections, its amazing, not just the Detail but the colors. I love HD. Huge difference too, We have a 40' 1080p Samsung and HD is amazing on it. We have a 720p Projector in the theater room with a 92" screen and HD material makes a huge difference. HD-DVDs are the way to go. I hate when a movie isnt released on HD.


Just this week watching Pushing Dasies on HD, I thoughht How I would hate watching a show like that in SD. in HD it looks amazing the colors really do jump out at you.

I'm watching on a similar 122" screen (at 720p). But was more of a cost ( < $1k) and location thing, since we couldn't fit a projection tv in the backroom comfortably and LCD/Plasmas cost entirely too much (or did at the time).

I will watch anything in SD, but honestly the difference in HD is so drastic for movies and sports that it is pretty annoying to have to go back.

Just a quick q - generally, network tv only do 720p while prenium hd cable channels always do 1080p, right?

As far I know, ABC does 720p and other networks do 1080i.

As for cable channels, I don't even think HDNet does 1080p.

Fox and ABC are 720p.

NBC, CBS, CW are 1080i.

No broadcasting in 1080p, that's mainly for high-def discs (HD DVD and Blu-ray).

I have had a Sony-kd-36xs955 for about 4 years now and wasn't taking any advantage of its HD capabilities

2 weeks ago I decided to go out and try out an indoor antenna to pick up HD OTA ... I am almost 40 miles out from the towers so I really didn't bother in the past because I didn't think I would be able to get anything with an indoor antenna and didn't want to put up something outside.

Well I spend just over $30 for an antenna and was able to pull in HD signals from NBC, ABC, FOX, WGN, PBS, and others.

Needless to say I was blown away with the picture and the difference in quality over what I was getting from SD Directv ... so much so that I finally decided to call Directv a couple days ago and make the plunge to their HD receiver and programming.

would I ever pass up a program I wanted to watch just because it was only available in SD and not HD ....no
but is there a night and day difference between most SD and HD... absolutely

I won't go back to watching football in SD. The Bengals/Browns game was only shown in SD for some reason, and that really irritated me. I much prefer to watch games on Fox than CBS as well. I have a 37" LCD and get free HD with my digital package from Time Warner.

Does anyone know why these networks refuse to do 1080i? Even the independent stations here do 1080i.

Isn't 720p actually better for things like sports? Sure, you get fewer lines, but you get progressive scan instead of interlacing.

On my set, 720p looks better for action sequences (like sports) and 1080i looks better for still images (like nature shows).

But then again, that's with a 720p TV followed by a 1080p set, so both times the 1080i was converted.

Now that I think about it, I have noticed the difference between 1080i and 720p when it comes to action sequences but I just assumed FOX & ABC had other reasons for doing this.

It depends on the show for me. Friday Night Lights and 24(at least when the sun goes down) don't necessarily benefit much from HD due to their style of filming.

But shows like Smallville and The Office look outstanding in HD. Unfortunately the CW still doesn't broadcast the former in DD 5.1. Thankfully the HD-DVD/Blu-ray sets do.

Of course there's a dark side to watching TV in HD. Checking out Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien's mugs if you don't believe me.
