SNL 10/06/07 - H: Seth Rogen / MG: Spoon

Seth: I'm Seth Rogen and I'll be hosting SNL this week with musical guest Spoon.

Andy: And you're gonna get Knocked Up.

Seth (to Andy): That was Super Bad.

I swear that Seth Rogen has only one publicity head-shot for everything.

Nice!

chrisih8u 10-06-07 11:07 PM

That was a terrible Sam Waterston impression. Not like Macgruber, either.

Brent L 10-06-07 11:26 PM

Chevy Chase on SNL, nice.

Jimmy James 10-06-07 11:26 PM

It wasn't a good Fred Thompson, either. It sounded like he was going from Dan Rather to Ted Koppel to Bill Clinton to Chris Matthews, but it never sounded like Fred.

ETA: The Waterston is so bad I think that's actually supposed to be part of the comedy.

chrisih8u 10-06-07 11:28 PM

Was Chevy too busy to get to the studio or did nobody want him there?

Joe Molotov 10-06-07 11:38 PM

The 2007 Douchebag Competition was pretty funny, but I'm not feeling the rest of it.

Brent L 10-06-07 11:41 PM

Live action Muppets...

chrisih8u 10-06-07 11:44 PM

I liked the Muppet sketch.

NitroJMS 10-06-07 11:47 PM

I thought Chevy was banned. I didn't see the appearance, was he really on?

Brent L 10-06-07 11:49 PM

I did too.

They really should have went all the way and provided Statler and Waldorf as well.

I just deleted it after Weekend Update. I couldn't handle it anymore. Not even remotely funny.

You are quite correct, but, in all fairness, it was better than the atrocious performance that was last week...

MechanicalMan 10-07-07 12:52 AM

I actually thought last week was better. *sigh* This show just isn't good right now.

Dr_Evil 10-07-07 01:00 AM

Tuned in to catch Spoon. They were good. Everything else...not so much.

Charlie Goose 10-07-07 01:15 AM

Not good, a D-. I didn’t think much of Rogen as host either, he gets a C+. Two episodes in and I’m already pissed off. I’ve been doing this too long now I think.

Kevin Federline
Mildly amusing with Samberg as K-Fed. B-

Monologue
Either the host sings or talks about what a dream it is to host SNL. Rogen did the latter. Not much else. C+

Douches
Probably the best bit of the night with the douche contest. C+

MacGruber
Not this MacGyver shit again! D

Brother & sister
Wiig and Rogen as two annoying kids ruining their parents’ party. As usual, Wiig is the best part. Can’t write an ending? Just have a character jump out the window to end it. Seriously, I wrote sketches like that when I was 8. C-

MacGruber
D-

Fred Thompson
Hammond did a fair impression, but that was all. C

Weekend Update
A long one. It loses full letter grades for having Chevy Chase, who hasn’t been relevant or funny since he left SNL in ‘76 and even then he was barely mediocre. Here he was absolute shit. The jokes were awful and his delivery reminded me of that Professor Irwin Corey who used to be on Hollywood Squares in the 1970s. Hammond also appears as Lou Dobbs, and they did a “Really?” bit about Sen. Craig. Big fat F-
Yes, not just an F but an F-.

Stonetown Colony
An original colony we’ve never heard of because they got a marijuana crop from the Indians, so they were stoned all the time. C-

Muppets
Why tap into a mine as rich as the muppets and not do anything with it? C-

Mad Joe
Rogen as a farmer and I think there were some double entendres regarding fruit. D-

Giantrobo 10-07-07 05:29 AM

Gene Simmons. rotfl

magiccmom 10-07-07 08:26 AM

Cant believe how many years I've been watching SNL...and yes, there is no comparison to the Belushi and the latter years...but, I still dont think this is that bad. Some parts have me laugh, and some parts bore me to tears, but I think when this is cancelled, I will really miss it. I enjoy the format for what it is, love or hate the musical guests or hosts, but it is still good enough to watch on a Saturday nite when nothing else is on.

TGM 10-07-07 08:48 AM

Thought on a whole this week was funnier than last.

I'll second this statement.

While is was not monumental, it was better than the dreck we got last week.

The douchebag contest and the Muppet bits were the best part of the night... and I think that MacGruber has over stayed its welcome (I found part 1 amusing... but then it got more and more strange).

I liked the WU this week... especially the book titles for Pope Benedict XVI ("Everybody Popes"). I was even glad to see Chevy is there and laugh hysterically at the photo of Fred Thompson wrapped in a blanket.

Anyways... I also have to give a  for Fred Armisen's "Gene Simmons" impression. That was great!

... that and FAN was regulated to two cameos (WU bit and the Stonetown bit)... poor Keenan.

Wiig is the best thing about this show. "Ahhhh said 'weeeeeee'!" ;)

das Monkey 10-07-07 11:35 AM

Hammond hasn't done a good impression in 5 years. Everything is either a repeat of Dan Rather or Dick Cheney or Bill Clinton with some Phil Donahue thrown in.

I liked the Sam Waterston impression, perhaps because just about everything Fred Armisen does makes me laugh.

Oh, and the show as a whole was shit.

das

slop101 10-07-07 12:24 PM

I'm a huge fan of Spoon, and have seen them a bunch of times, but there was something off about them here, I'm not sure what, but it was the weakest performance I've seen from them.

Agreed with both.

You know the show was a stinker when the funniest thing was Armisen looking like Gene Simmons.

I labeled what I couldn't put my finger on as Koppel, but you're exactly right -- his Thompson was Rather and Donahue with an occasional slip into Clinton and Matthews.

Gizmo 10-07-07 01:08 PM

The only part I laughed at : Yoda Minnisota
